For a while now, I've been ripping DVDs and BDs (that I own!) either to have digital versions to put on the kids' tablet, or for a general plan to stream my physical discs over a home network, if I ever get round to setting it up. I use Make MKV and Handbrake to create the digital files.
About a year ago my Blu-ray drive stopped reading BD discs. I wondered if it was hardware or software. Windows can see the drive, and it will access CDs and DVDs totally fine, but if I put a BD disc in there, it just can't seem to see it.
I've come to the conclusion this may be some new DRM that's been downloaded at some point. So my question is: does anybody else rip discs? Does it still work? What are my options here?
Any advice would be appreciated thanks!

Did you upgrade windows at any point? Windows 10 and 11 don't support playing Blueray natively, I think. But if you're using 3rd party software then that should still work.
I kinda want to rip all my old DVDs, but I haven't messed around with that kind of stuff for years.
Back then it was a bit of a hassle with things like region-free drive firmware, region-free hacks/software for windows, using overly complex software and trying to find the best settings in terms of size, quality and ripping speed.
I have dvds in a bunch of regions, and I remember needing to be very careful about the drive getting region-locked. I dunno if that's still an issue.
Is there a one-click solution?
Sorry, hijacked your thread without helping much.
PS/ If you have a fire stick or something it's pretty easy to set up home streaming. I have a bunch of old videos on an external usb drive on my PC, and then just share that and set it up on Kodi or Plex on my fire stick.

Another mini hijack: I tried ripping my DVD’s a few years ago. Had a horrible problem with the sound always being out of sync, which then involved another process to get it back in sync. Eventually became too much of a pain in the bum.

Yeah, I've had that issue. But it was only intermittent and not for every movie. Not sure what caused it, other than maybe just the PC not being able to keep up with the encoding and decoding the copyprotection.
PS/ Did anyone work out a good way to rip things like Dvd Extras so that you can store them along with the original movie files? Without making a full 1:1 dvd copy that takes up loads of space.

I'm curious to see if it works for me. Haven't tried it in Windows for years, ever since I got through my last box of Blu-rays. Can't really be fucked going up in the loft to get a disc, though. Could very well be a duff laser.
Not sure if the lack of native ability to play Blu-rays would impact makemkv, as that's just ripping raw data from the disc rather than using a codec to play it.
I've got a spare pioneer (IIRC) internal BD drive in my pile of stuff to get rid of. If it's a hardware issue then I'm happy to just chuck it in the post for you if you can cover shipping.

Seems unlikely that any kind of DRM would stop the player from reading Blu-Rays altogether. As others have said it's probably a software or possibly hardware related issue. As far as DVDs go, programs like X-Copy and MakeMKV should bypass any player's built-in region locking mechanism entirely. Unsure about Blu-Rays though, that they even have region coding at all is beyond idiotic.

I vaguely remember something about BR drives having separate lasers to read either DVDs (red) and BR (blue, duh). Maybe it's a drive failure if you suddenly can't read any BR at all.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure if it stopped working when upgrading from Win 10 to 11. That might have been it.
I did wonder about the drive just being broken. It really just can't see any Blu-ray at all, it spends ages spinning then just says no disc. I can play and rip CDs and DVDs just like before.
I don't want to pull the trigger on a new drive unnecessarily. I wish I knew someone with a drive I could borrow to try it out. Alternatively, I wish I had a Mac I could plug it into to see if it works on another system!
