Well that's not going to work being on a new page is it. What I mean is that I suddenly have the urge to go to Tokyo because of the women shitting and rolling about everyone talking about it. It looks amazing.

We went visiting friends and they went to a family meal that night, so no tour guide. We figured 'yeah, we got this'. We didnt.

We also went to a karaoke bar that turned out the night we went wasnt actually doing karaoke but it was women-shitting-on-a-plastic-sheet-and-rolling-around-in-it night. It’s an interesting place. You went on Foisty Friday. Such a gaijin move. Bet you didn’t even bring your own spoon.

Presumably you stayed a while to make sure the karaoke definitely wasn't happening?
"We need to go, now" "wait, it'll be coming on in a minute, this will be the last one" ... "okay the one after this one" "may as well get some drinks ordered while we wait"

I wasn't impressed not being allowed in to the men's floors in akiba. Apparently it's so they don't get embarrassed when choosing their sex assistants.
Also for a country that is ahead on many things I couldn't believe how cash driven it was still. So many places I couldn't pay using my phone and even card. I haven't used cash in London for a few years now.

Oh and I purchased a BDSM graphic novel which was sealed like all of them. The cover was pretty tame. When I got back to the hotel I checked it out. The most fucked up/psychotic thing I've ever seen. It's something I'll never unsee.

There are cashless payments in a lot of places, but it's mostly QR code driven with stuff like Paypay/Alipay. You can only get that if you have a local mobile phone and the whole process looks like a massive ballache too, terrible tech. It only took off because of massive bribes to both shops and users.
A lot of places do let you pay for stuff with Suica or Pasmo, especially convenience stores and chains, but ever since they started having a barney with Visa last year it's a real pain to charge it on Apple Pay if you don't have a Mastercard.

So eh... Pics?

Direct flights are fucked up at the moment because of the war. Usually they’d go over the top of Russia but obviously not an option at the moment. It adds loads of time (and presumably cost) to the journey.

Ironically when I lived there in 2008/2009 I could barely use my Mastercard for anything. Only worked on Amazon and JR shinkansen booking IIRC. I remain team Osaka all the way though, Tokyo has its stuff but Osaka had the better atmosphere.

I did enjoy Osaka, but hard to fall in love in three days. I did get my chanko-nabe there though, so it had a special place in my heart.

My biggest worry in Japan is the food - I'm not the biggest fan or rice or fish (and not from a lack of trying)! Not ideal. I went with a vegatarian who just gave up in one place and ordered 'just rice' and it came with bits of shrimp in it. I heard it's better for vegetarians in the past few years, though I'm not one so I can't confirm.
In the 2-3 years before Covid the Japanese government suddenly realised that they could get a massive amount of money from tourists if they *didn't* make everything a total pain in the arse for them.
Hence them suddenly starting to push free wi-fi hotspots (about 15 years too late), cashless payments (though of course they balsed it up with dozens of crappy local options that weren't compatible with basic contactless credit cards.. but it is finally getting there), and things like vegetarian and halal food.
As I hear it, it's still not as good as places like London for vegetarian food, but you can at least now find places that have vegetarian options marked on the menu, and restaurants have started to realise that things like beef stock aren't vegetarian.
Probably still end up with a lot of soba noodles in small towns though.
But if you're not vegetarian then there's a massive amount of restaurants and cafes here, so there are billions of non-rice non-fish options.
Huge amounts of deep fried stuff, lots of noodles, and then just loads of pasta places and cafes/bakeries if you aren't fussed about going local.

UK Kabaddi finals! www.bbc.co.uk/sport/get-inspired/65727957If I had more notice, might have gone to this...tried to talk a child into coming with me, but they aren't interested. The girls are off in NYC to see Taylor Swift....
