Friendly forumites in Japan... I'm coming your way in May, and a big part of the trip was to catch the back end of the Sumo Basho in Tokyo. The vendor I used to get tickets has let me down, SO THE TRIP IS RUINED! BUT! Tickets go on general release on Saturday, 10AM. If there's a friendly forumite willing to run the gauntlet of ticket scalpers and pick up a few tickets for me via their web site, I can pay CASH MONEY and a forumite bonus via whatever payment mechanism you desire. Please and thankyou. Save my holiday. \Stealth "wierdo Westener is big into Sumo" post

You can age a person like cutting a tree by the random sports they got into watching C4 on Saturday morning.

I'm pretty sure you can buy them online and in English, although there's no real way to be sure until they go online on the 8th. sumo.pia.jp/en/

When I went to one of the Sumo events I got tickets on the day fairly easily from the kiosk outside the stadium. Admittedly if I hadn't found out it was on last minute I would have pre-booked to be safe. They always went to whatever city I wasn't visiting whenever I travelled and only in Osaka when I travelled out... This was back in 2012ish mind....

The number of overseas tourists coming to Japan absolutely skyrocketed in the 3-4 years before Covid, so I think it got a lot harder to get tickets. When I went back in about 2009 we just rocked up late on the day and got tickets without any problems.
The number of overseas tourists dropped to about zero because of Covid, but it's rising steadily now, so I don't know what the sumo ticket situation is. I also read that they stopped selling them at the door on the day, but I don't know if that was due to Covid and whether they've restarted.
But it definitely looks like you can order online from that website, once they go live.

Yeah we will definitely be in that site at 2AM. But the purchase pages revert to Japanese so it’s a bit frought. Locals on the ground after a good nights sleep stand a better chance.

Again: we’ll be trying, but reports are doing so from outside of Japan with the translation lag and server lag for a thing that’s in high demand… better to be on the inside.

If translation is a thing on the website, I could potentially manage it. But the timezones may make it tricky.

I'm in Japan, but if it's in Japanese then I'd be using chrome's built in translate as well.

My only worry (other than my own unreliability on Saturday mornings) is whether you'd need the same credit card to get the tickets, or whether the tickets would have names printed on them and you'd need id. I don't know what anti-scalping measures they have. [edit] This implies not: www.reddit.com/r/Sumo/comments/zsaql1/buying_sumo_tickets_as_a_gift/Phattso I'm not sure there'd be any advantage to me doing it over doing it yourself, other than the 2am thing, but I'm happy to do it if you'd like. Paypal would be the easiest way to get money to me. PM me your requirements for dates, seats, etc.. maybe with some backup dates/options if the first choice isn't available. [edit 2] It does look like it's going to be available in English though: sumo.pia.jp/en/vacant/va05.jsp

You’re a star, thankyou. It’s mainly a belt and braces thing - anecdotal evidence has suggested the site is dog slow outside Japan, plus the whole 2AM thing. I’ll do some research on ticket names/cc number as that’s a great shout. If that gets verified it’s a non starter. But otherwise I’ll drop you a PM with the deets. If you can you can, if not then absolutely no drama.

I guess we’ll find out soon enough!

Wow. It turns out it’s really quite the faff. You purchase a “ticket” which you redeem at a 7-Eleven using the card used on the site and then the actual tickets are printed. Then you’d have to get them to our hotel by post. That’s a mission. 😁 No E-Tickets or QR codes you’d be able to just send me. We’ll take our chances at 2AM, but thanks for the kind offer. (There’s still an outside chance the company we used will come through - apparently some foreigners bought tickets through them at the last Basho and then made utter dicks of themselves so the Sumo Association waited until the 11th hour and then cut all ties with the ticketing company - a very Japanese moment - but they’ve petitioned to have that reversed)

Yep yep, all good. Knackered now though. Late nights and early mornings are a young man’s game. With that in the bag the trip just got real. Tachiai!

Glad it worked out in the end.
Out of interest, did it go Japanese at any point, or was it all in English?

Almost all in English. Fell into Japanese for the rules, the seating details, and a small amount of the payment flow. The video we watched of someone doing it late last year had much less English, sk good progress made.
Now to see if the kiosk in the 7-Eleven has English. The Ghibli Museum one in a Lawson didn’t a few years back!

They mostly have english in the kiosks, but frustratingly not all functions are available in English. And things can sometimes drop back into Japanese, as you discovered.
If that happens I'd just give it to the convenience store staff and get them to do it for you.

I have friends in Chiba and Kyoto, but none in Tokyo at this time. I think it'd be a little awkward trying to get them to get the tickets to you.

Thank ye, but it's all sorted now. We didn't get our preferred seats, but at least we have seats. Thoroughly hyped.
Just have to hope that my boy Takakeisho makes it to at least Day 11 now. If I go all the way to Japan and don't see the Battle Hamster do his thing, I'm going to be plenty pissed.
