I haven't really drunk since 2019. I was always your classic binge drinker, never drank at home but if I went out once I started I never would stop until I passed out. Decided to finally learn my lesson and just stopped one day after a particularly bad 3 day hangover. Only had a couple of drinks since then, a glass of prosecco at my brother's wedding last year, and several pints too many after my mum's funeral last month (which I figured was ok)
The thing I find most annoying are my "mates" trying to get me to have a drink every time we go out, they can't seem to get their head round the fact that, no I don't drink any more

WHATS WRONG WIV YA, HAVE A DRINK AND ENJOY YOURSELF I had that a few times in my younger days. One lad kept trying to give me a beer, so I grabbed his wrist and told him I'd break his arm if he did it again.

Should’ve blocked him with a breadbin lid

Breadbid lid surely nullifies yeast?

So I'm not teetotal deliberately but I'm pretty much a non drinker now. I've never been someone who drinks alone as (no judgement on anyone who does) I've just never really seen the point. Plus I've always been acutely aware of the downsides of drinking (terrible hangovers, dependence, emotional crutch, effect on mood, etc.) and how I want to avoid that. Then during lockdown when everyone was drinking more from home, because I wasn't socialising, I found I didn't drink for weeks and weeks on end, and didn't miss it at all.
I still enjoy the occasional pint or three when meeting friends. I feel like three really is the sweet spot these days, where anything more is a case of diminishing returns and increased negatives.
I look back at my twenties and some of the times I've been shamefully drunk and I wonder why that felt so normal at the time. This country definitely has or had a strange relationship with alcohol.
Anyway, get a blog, me.

I think that is where most of us would like to be. I'm not there yet (more for the other thread though)

Perhaps a drink might have calmed you down a bit

Yeah alcohol is renowned for its anger suppression.

I don’t really drink much anymore. I occasionally have a few drinks at a family gathering or at the football if I’m with friends. It’s more the thought of a hangover to be honest. I’ve always suffered bad hangovers, even when younger. The cost/benefit just isn’t worth it anymore so I never really have more than 3. So not quite teetotal, but I’m trying to kill time at the airport (and not go to the bar )

18 months and counting, after 10 years of heavy drinking almost every day. Not even a sweet or cake with any alcohol in it.
Suppressing the urge was rough in the first few weeks but became considerably easier over the next few months and it continued to flatten out as time went by. Nowadays any desire has disappeared entirely, and the vicinity of alcohol or people drinking doesn't bother me at all. I just don't care anymore.

Congrats Rex! I'm at a similar stage now. 565 days, so I must've missed celebrating 18 months a few weeks ago. I might have to treat myself and grab a 1 year and then 2 year chip off Etsy when I reach that milestone. I can definitely afford it with the ridiculous amount of money I've saved!
Didn't think I'd manage to last a month at first, but it definitely gets a lot easier. I still find pubs a bit of a nightmare, but that's due more to being on a totally different wavelength to people who've had a few, and not being able to shake that "I need to catch up asap!" feeling.

Well done guys. Amazing. I hit the two years mark at Easter. I'd like to say I've saved money but I've just been splurging more on video games. That'll be the next thing I need to kick. I quite often get asked if I feel any better for stopping. My answer is always "No, but I know that I'm not guaranteed to feel worse". Wish I'd stopped about 15 years ago!
It's also helped me reach a stage of fitness that I never thought possible (not a "I'm a super fit bastard" brag, because I am most certainly not super fit, just more that I'm fitter than I thought I would be at this age particularly if I'd kept boozing), so it's worth it for that at least.

Since having trouble with my heart I stopped drinking, and then introduced a few caveats (social only, but even then at 1/3 of what I used to drink). Basically gone from drinking a few bottles of wine and half a bottle of rum a week to zero. It's not been as bad as I was fearing, but also I think I'm missing it every now and then.
This thread is a good reminder that I shouldn't be afraid of just packing it in altogether.

I'm still toddling on, mainly drinking AF beer. I went out last week with some old mates from Scouts - three pints and then two Heineken Zeroes, and I felt pretty rough in the morning. I think it's lack of decent sleep that really does me in.
