Only decent players were Bellingham and Saka. Defense OK too I guess.

Well that was certainly an England match. Must remember to get some beers in before Thursday, watching them play completely sober is fucking painful. It really was. I'm struggling to see how we go on playing a better team. You'd hope we turn it on for those games. Sure there's an argument for being safe but that 2nd half was not inspiring. We'd have more space against the bigger sides. Teams like this we always struggle with because they don't leave much space, and Southgate doesn't really set them up to create space with their passing. |

Meh. Dull, but a wins a win, innit. Serbia never looked like doing much, but we didn’t really turn up for the 2nd half.

Good first half, abysmal second. Abysmal maybe a bit harsh but it wasn't great. Bellingham, Saka, Rice and Pickford were all very good. Stones and Guehi fine. The rest were pretty poor. I think Southgate got the starting selection mostly right but his subs (and presumably his HT talk) were rubbish. |

What I'd been reading about Serbia had me worried about this game, so I take that as a good result. I think that may be our toughest group game.
The lack of composure in the 2nd half is bizarre though. These players can all surely keep ball. Even hoofing at long at the first hint of difficulty is so basic and breeds problems of its own. We can play out surely.

Hoping Mainoo can be the stand next to Rice and control the game guy, but it doesn't seem a reasonable expectation on a 19 year old.
It's definitely not Trent and on today's evidence it's not Gallagher either.

Some of the passing in that 2nd half was incredibly sloppy imo especially with those situations where only an easy pass was required like there was a substantial lack of communication and giving Serbia the space to take shots outside the box. |

Classic Southgate tournament group game. 3 points in probably our toughest group game. Need to be so much better though. After 30 minutes we just let them boss it.
As great as Foden is, I’d try something different in the next game. He was poor tonight. I think I’d put Eze on the left. Saka and Eze on either wing would be a pretty daunting prospect for the opposition.
A wins a win I guess.

Eze would have helped the balance of the team a lot more than Foden. Great player, just doesn't suit the role he's been asked to play.

I know the Serbs were playing themselves back into the game but this really feels like the dissection you get after a team has been knocked out. It was maybe a 6/10 or 7/10 performance but England played alright.
