Well hello, bit of bad luck with hitting the post, bit of great luck in getting the deflection.

Are innocent boys and their inflatable spitfires have been set upon by scoundrels. Look how bravely they run. There is such a large minority of England supporters who absolutely do not deserve a squad as good as Southgate has built.

Disappointing lack of upsets so far. England: hold my beer I’ve been thinking usually one of the favourites has a mare. Germany, Spain Italy and Netherlands have done well and look decent. I feel it might be England who fuck it all up for themselves. So are we counting this as enough of a favourites bottle for today's tally or is England not safe yet?

Trent worries me at CM. Probably fine for the group stages, but against France, Germany or Spain he’d get found out I think.

Surpringly adventurous line up, I like it. Let's hope the intent in the tactics matches it.

That front four is very tasty. Even if Southgate wants to play a containment type game you couldn’t help but push on with this line-up.

That is definitely the right line up. Good start.

Like you I figure against the very best there’s a chance he gets overrun. Maybe this is Southgate giving him a trial - toughest game in the group, show us if you can do it. If he does get found out there’s two games to bed in Gallagher/Mainoo

Hopefully that England team works well together because that's a crazy amount of attacking talent on the pitch.
Edit: missing a quality shithouse defensive midfielder is probably our biggest weakness.

Surely the idea is to go out and attack, especially as the other teams in the group could only draw.
Trent has won all the cups there is to win domestically, he is a big game player and should do well tonight.

I suppose if Rice and Trent are supposed to be the two who sit you could easily imagine a scenario like a mini version of the problem Scotland had against Germany where there’s a gap between defence and midfield for the right kind of player to exploit. Obviously it wouldn’t be that bad because England have better players in every position but those two do like a maraud up the park every now and again.
But then, England doesn’t really produce top level shinkickers anymore so might as well go out and try to blitz the opposition.

Playing a Liverpool right back in midfield over Mainoo is peak Southgate

Peak Southgate would have been a back 5 with Maguire selected and Bellingham on the bench.
This is a brave new frontier

Big Mainoo fan obviously, but I see no issue with Trent starting there. Especially with Rice next to him as the holding player.

I kind of get the Trent thing. Against deep defences, with space in midfield he has amazing passing range. I’m just not yet convinced by him as a midfielder. Hope I’m proven wrong.
