It's spectacularly dumb if one bank failing can trigger a global banking crisis.

How do I make money from this? Easy, just buy bank stocks then watch them rise spectacularly this morning after Credit Suisse gets a bailout from it's national bank.

This is one of those get rich schemes that now requires a time machine, isn't it?

This is one of those get rich schemes that now requires a time machine, isn't it? Or already be rich so buying a tanking stock for fun doesn’t matter if it doesn’t work, or have early insider info, or have spare cash laying around and enjoys gambling with it. Some of these sorts of folks will be enjoying their 40 per cent at the moment !

Don't both Saudi Arabia and Qatar own substantial shares in CS?
If so, has a government just bailed out the financial interests of two the richest nations on earth?
Seems legit.

For you this was a global financial crisis, for me it was Tuesday. I had a hangover the size of Tuesday on Sunday morning. I always get confused by economics. When it is going great, I never feel any better off. When it goes to shit, I feel unreasonably fucked. Might as well have got a fucking habit, and see how that went.

Economics makes zero sense to me. They make it sound as if it is some completely untameable beast, with one lever pull bringing it crashing down all around us. When things go to shit, it apparently comes out of nowhere and no one can do anything about it except for make everyone suffer (or between 99%-99.9% of people).
It probably made more sense when we were just using coins as currency, where this limited resource had a value based on how limited it was. Notes made it a bit more confusing, assigning some arbitrary value to something that is practically unlimited. Now that it is just numbers flying about over the internet it really has become complete nonsense.

Marx said capitalism wasn’t a cycle but a downwards spiral. Fifteen years since the last crash and here we go again for exactly the same reasons.

Oh, I dunno. Sharpening stones are fairly cheap, I think? It was a running joke when I was out there that you didn't go to Deera Square ("Chop Chop Square") on a Friday after Duhur unless you fancied getting splattered in blood. Officially, we weren't allowed to be anywhere near that area, but apparently if they saw a westerner there you'd be taken to the front because an infidel witnessing the act would greatly enhance the shame of the condemned and their family. Nice place.

Nice place. It they want to be treated seriously they'll have to do away with such dark-age barbarity. Boris Johnson could probably arrange some cheap JCBs - they can hang dozens at a time and it's basically free once you've bought the rope.

It's just printed debt, and the only value it has is how much you trust the debtor to repay his debt.

No, just being part of the investor class who’s in on the whole fucking racket How we never had the scaffolds running 24/7 after 2008 is a mystery to me. Next time we hopefully won’t collectively drop the ball. Came mighty close to correcting course during Covid but they got us ‘back to work’ in time before the movement to fix this fucked up system took firm enough root Sooooo close.

My admittedly limited understanding of the situation is that this government only guaranteed the deposits on the banks. The users are safe, the owners are not.

Yeah, the Swiss National Bank won't let the Swiss branch of the CS fail, but the foreign branches are not going to get any money from them. Also, the deposit safety you probably mean is the obligatory 100k safety that all deposits in Switzerland must have (but only per user, not per account).

This is a fairly good explainer: It's fairly long, but he's a really entertaining speaker and knows his shit. Fairly apolitical too.
