Sure, I don't have some fancy pants console, anyway the PS4 Pro I bought from CEX seems to have died and my googling suggests a likely hard drive failure, I'm about to take it back to CEX and test their two year warranty but just to check, rather foolishly perhaps I have never backed up any saves to a USB or similar and I don't have PlayStation Plus so am I right in thinking all my saves will be lost?
One other thing is am I right in thinking I should deactivate this PS4 from my PS account but presumably I should wait until either CEX tell me it's knackered or should I do this now before I take it in?

My PS4 Slim had this error after a mandatory update and I lost everything. Sorry, but those saves are almost certainly gone. Its why user Rogueyone gave me his old PS4 Pro as it was easier than trying to rebuild mine.
I don’t know about Cex return policy but I’d probably play it safe and try to divorce it from my profile if I could.

Thanks yes actually I'm not that bothered I only really played TLOU2, my boy lost a bit more but c'est la vie. I'm more interested in getting another working PS4, I'll see what they say in store in a bit.

Oh well, got a replacement (S/H) PS4 Pro from CEX today, shame I lost all my saves but a lesson learnt I guess, especially as I had a hundred or so hours ploughed into Fallout 4, can't see me ever redoing that one. At least CEX didn't quibble.

Sounds like a fair result on the hardware. I feel for you on the saves though. Some games I could just never bring myself to restart from scratch.
When my PS5 died at the end of last year, I was eternally grateful that everything was properly backed up. It all restored seamlessly on my replacement machine. It’s annoying that Sony lock that feature behind the PS+ subscription cost, but having had a console die on me without warning, makes it worth paying in my view.
