Yeah, it's brilliant. It's the first one in a while where I think the difficulty is well-balanced. And the Engage system and bonds and such is a great replacement for the creepy social sim stuff (though there's still a bit of it) That said, I just lost a unit. It was right at the end of a reaaaaaally long and difficult map, I'd used all my rewinds and couldn't be arsed to do everything again, so I said "fuck it, I'll just get a new archer eventually". And in the next chapter, I did! It's pretty ridiculous how many units this game throws at you.

The heavy emphasis on the social stuff pretty much put me off even starting Three Houses (which is odd as I have played through P5 and P4G happily enough). Only played this a little bit so far (third battle?) but enjoying so far. Going to get more game to me this week hopefully to get into it properly. Looks nice and colourful on OLED Switch too.

Have you played a Fire Emblem before? Only awakening on 3ds donkeys years ago It depends what you liked about Awakening, and the series in general. Three Houses probably has a better story, and a stronger emphasis on the strategic layer. Pretty much any unit can be anything you want them to be, with enough education and training. There's a lot more of managing relationships away from the battles themselves. Engage has more of a bog-standard story, and the characters aren't as strong. But it's very much focused on the battles, and tactically it's a return to how the games were before Awakening revived the series. The maps are also better, and it looks much better. Personally I very much prefer Engage, but that's mostly just a taste thing. I think both are worth playing.

Tip for anyone playing this:
The difficulty is, on the whole, very well balanced. But it is not well balanced for the skirmishes and various other side content.
This is because those maps scale with Alear's (your main character) level. So if you let them get too far ahead of the rest of your team, you'll be fighting skirmishes where is impossible for anyone but Alear to kill things.
It's only really relevant if you want to grind, but maybe something to keep in mind.

On chapter 16 now, it's still great. Just really, really well-designed maps.
Unfortunately though, I've had to bench more than half of my army. A thing about Maddening is that you don't really get to grind levels, so you've basically got to pick a well-rounded team and focus on them. Which I'm happy to do; it's just a bit of a change from how Fire Emblem has been recently.
