MOR 'Indie' for sitting in the glovebox of a nissan micra was big in the 2000s. The Feeling, The Script, The Whoever did that shes so lovely song. Power Ballads for wine mums.

I’d have to add Kings of Leon to that list. Purveyors of dreadfully bland and unimaginative songs that cover bands and wedding DJs seem to have mistakenly come to believe are “all-time classics” that will get a few pissed up middle aged folk back onto the dance floor during the mid-set lull, while they save the Mr Brightside big guns for the finale. I really, really hate bloody Sex on Fire. (Although I do quite like the Killers and Mr Brightside still.)

I had a neighbour that loudly played 'sex on fire' pretty much 24/7 for months. I absolutely fucking hate that song.
Weirdly, when he got bored of that he moved onto 'Smooth Criminal' by AAF.

Yeah Kings of Leon are boring as hell. No fan of the bloody Killers either. My flatmate bought Hot Fuss when it came out and I swear it was the only album he had. It was on constantly at the same time you would hear it in every fucking bar you went out to. Absolute fucking drivel.

It’s crazy how Mr Brightside is still in the charts. Nothing against the song, personally, but it feels random that that’s the song that survived the 2000s.

Thing is kings of Leon had a sudden shift into MOR and then firmly stayed in it, before that they were fucking weird hicks.

I dont know if its still true (or if it ever was) but I remember reading a stat that said Mr Brightside was the UKs most streamed song on spotify during every major event (world cup games, the olympics, covid, basically any time we get pissed in celebration or commiseration) since the service launched here.

My cousin’s 50th was a karaoke disco and there was almost a fight over who got to do Mr Brightside. In the end a big group of dads did it altogether and I wanted to die.

The thing is, I get it. I absolutely, 100% get why it has been omnipresent for the last 20 years and will likely never bugger off. Its an almost perfect song in that respect.
I mean, fuck it, I would fully support it becoming our national anthem.

I fucking hated The Streets.
God, yes. Fuck off you dull, monotonous twat.

The soundtracks for ISS/Pro Evo games... I recall those halcyon days of masterful Japanese pop-rock

That way when the the team are playing badly it can also be converted to mr shite side and sang from the stands.

When I was DJ-ing back in the day, I scoffed at people who only played one genre of music and dismissed all the others. I’d say there’s good tunes and bad tunes in every genre, you just need to find the good ones and appreciate them. I played mainly house, breakbeat, a bit of drum and bass, but I also appreciated plenty of funk, retro, garage, and non - dance music like rock/indie, quite a bit of metal, all sorts.
But there’s no amount of drugs on this Earth that could ever make me like Happy Hardcore. That’s just stupid noise for lunatics.

I never ever understood the hype behind The Libertines and I think the breaking point was Pete Doherty having some solo song that I had seen played on MTV2 and in the music video they have flashing images of all these literary icons like Shakespeare and thrown in their repeatedly was images of Pete as if to say, yeh he's in the same division, for sure.

Yeah I was so turned off by the whole Dohertyness of The Libertines that I just wrote them off almost immediately without really listening to them. But I've since realised my error there. Also Barat's follow up band Dirty Pretty Things had an awesome first album.

Not going to suggest that I agree with this article, but what a take:

The UK "rapper" Giggs.
If he can build a financially successful career out of being a terrible rapper then truly anything is possible.

Bit of a cheat as it is a cover and maybe a bit harsh given it looks like a Secondary School performance but this is pretty grim. Like 3 different songs in one.
