Hey, Long-time EGer first time FGer. I put Dune 4K Blu-ray in my PS5 to watch again yesterday and was surprised and annoyed at how loud the disc drive was; it was almost unwatchable. A few observations: 1. This is the 4th or 5th time watching the film and I don't recall noticing this before; however this is the first time since recently decorating the room, moving the PS5, and installing it in a new media unit. This makes me think it could be environmental. 2. The noise significantly reduces to a much more acceptable level about 10 mins into the film. Perhaps the system reads ahead to temporarily buffer playback, so maybe the drive is working overtime at the beginning of the film? This makes me think it could be hardware. I've read a few suggestions elsewhere online: a. Re-seat the system on its stand (I have it horizontally). b. Install a thick mouse pad underneath the stand to dampen vibrations. c. Gently "tap" the side of the system with no disc in (!!). Anyone else have experience with any of this? Cheers.

I've seen a supposed fix that involves manually ejecting the disc using a screw under the drive. Instruction below I've just copied from somewhere.
"What you will need before you begin: A well-lit room with a table to work on. A #1 Phillips or Cross Hatch screwdriver works best. A small flashlight (optional).
Turn off the PS5™ system and disconnect the AC cord.
Disconnect all cables from the system.
Remove the stand from the PS5 system.
Place the system sideways on a clean, flat surface in front of you, so that the front of the system is facing you. You're going to remove the bottom panel that has the disc slot from the PS5. The top panel that has a PS logo on it should be facing the table.
Place your palms on the top of the panel, near the back corner of the system, and grip the edge of the panel with your fingers.
Lift the corner of the panel up, away from the system until the panel shifts a couple of centimetres.
You will hear a click and the panel will move a couple of centimetres. Lift the panel off, starting from the right side.
Once the panel has been removed, look for four circular pieces on the bottom of the optical drive. Beside these is a circular dust cover of black plastic. Carefully peel this dust cover away to reveal the screw beneath. Set the dust cover to one side for now.
Turn the screw clockwise until the disc can be seen peeking out of the disc slot. This may require several turns of the screw. Very little effort is required to turn the screw.
Grab the disc by hand and pull it out of the disc slot.
Use the black, circular dust cover to cover the screw.
Replace the bottom panel by positioning it over the exposed section of the system, a couple of centimetres away from the edge.
Slide the panel back into place until it clicks into position.
Reconnect all cables and the AC cord. Turn on the system to check that everything is working properly.
This is normal, and simply means that it is reading the disk information at a faster rate to load all the data more effectively."

My disc drive can be quite noisy as well, from time to time. I suspect it is a balance issue, as if I apply a light amount of weight to the top of the PS5 it will stop (before starting again as soon as I remove that weight). Same if I lift it up too. I have it lying flat and the stand seems particularly hopeless at keeping an even level.
Don't normally have much of a problem when watching blu-rays on it, as the volume is normally enough to drown it out, but it is annoying playing a game from disc.

Abarth71 Thanks! To be honest that's probably the most likely solution, but also the one I'm most terrified to try!

Vandelay Thanks. That reminds me actually. I did also read elsewhere of someone saying balancing a game case on top of the system also helps, I guess for similar reasons. The shape of the console doesn't seem particularly suited to balancing things on top mind you... I reckon I'll give this a try next time though. Hoping to get a couple more 4K blus for Xmas, so also intrigued to see if they exhibit the same problem.

I noticed something else this evening. Skipping back to chapter 1 makes the drive ridiculously loud again, same with chapter 2, 3 is a little quieter, and then from chapter 5 onwards it is much more acceptable - by no means silent, but no longer disruptive to the experience.
I don't know how the data on the disc is layed out, but I'm assuming the disc needs to spin at variable speeds depending on which area is being read from, which would perhaps explain why it gets progressively quieter as the film progresses - presumably due to the disc slowing down, but could be the opposite too I suppose.
