Just because they are "hero action movies" does not mean they have to be formalic or genericness, its just it makes them a lot of money. Shame they have to be 12a type films but with the budgets for these main marvel movies they can't take the risk. Eternals looks so text book generic

See, I think his argument is bullshit. He harkens back to some imagined halcyon time when kids appreciated indie movies but that’s not true, is it. Does he really think that kids were going to see and appreciate Amadeus in 1984? Instead of Ghostbusters? When I was at school everyone was talking about Robocop and Predator, nobody gave two shits about A Room With A View. He also seems to totally ignore the fact that streaming services make discovery of film far easier than it ever was *and also makes it easier for “arthouse” films to be enjoyed*. Does he think that Parasite would have been enjoyed by so many if it had to be rented on VHS? Or Nomadland?

Villeneuves statement was translated by a Spanish Princeton, this is what he said to a french magazine which reads very differently:
“ it might help to take a look at what the director recently said to the French outlet Premiere about the same batch of flicks. “The problem today… well, if we’re talking about Marvel, the thing is, all these films are made from the same mould," he said, adding, "Some filmmakers can add a little colour to it, but they’re all cast in the same factory. It doesn’t take anything away from the movies, but they are formatted.”

To be honest I'm fine with some things being formulaeic - I ;ike some things like MCU being what they are, there's plenty of experimental stuff out there. It's true of most media - for example I want a new Halo to be Halo, not Doom.

Saw Shang-Chi in 4DX, both brilliant and awful at the same time. Couple of times it was so violent thought I was going to be thrown out of the chair.
Great fun film tho

Interesting discussion. I'm happy with marvel films being of a certain format because that format is a fun format.
If I'm paying to see a film more often than not I want it to be a fun spectacle. Sure occasionally I want something more deep and meaningful. Arrival is a superb reasonably recent example.
But if a film is low budget I less inclined to feel the need to see it in the cinema. Sat in the dark on a large TV in 4k with hdr and 5.1 surround is more than enough for me.
So yeah with modern streaming services art house definitely still has a place. I just don't have the time to search for it or chance it these days like I did as a student.

Also to add, Marvel are releasing so much content that intertwines that they have also got me invested in watching the saga continue etc.
That said I'm very much looking forward to a few other non marvel films like Villeneuve's Dune. But to labour the point re marvel and being invested in the saga, beyond the end of this year the films I'm looking forward to are probably only marvel!

Yeah, Villeneuve isn't wrong. "Marvel films are factory-produced to a specific formula" shouldn't even be a controversial statement, it's pretty obvious that they are. Which isn't to say that they're bad, just that they have a formula.
I don't think he even really gives a shit. It's more entertainment journalists asking famous directors "BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT MARVEL MOVIES" because they're desperate for a headline to feed the culture war.
Anyway, formulas are fine, Marvel movies are fine. I don't get particularly excited about them, but I'm fine with them existing as long as they don't crowd out things that I like. In normal times I like going to the cinema, and I want to be able to keep seeing things that are not Disney/Marvel at the cinema.

I think the only other franchise that's up there with 24ish movies is Bond, and as much as I love it, you could hardly say it's not formulaic... other than a couple of mild attempts at reinvention with License to Kill and Casino Royale. Or I guess, Disney movies. Which definitely have a formula. I'm not going to claim MCU movies are all stone cold classics or high art or anything, but personally I think it's pretty remarkable they've pulled it off so far. I'm not really sure it's fair to expect much more than that. Winter Soldier, Iron man 3, GotG, The Dark World (not very successfully), Homecoming, etc.. all at least tried to shake up the formula a little. I agree that Eternals doesn't look that interesting, but the director is interesting so who knows... maybe it'll surprise us.
I mean, Die Hard movies have a formula, Alien(s) movies have a formula, non MCU superhero movies have a formula, etc...
That said, the best MCU(-ish) thing is the first season of Jessica Jones, and that certainly doesn't follow the MCU formula.

Saying films which belong to a shared genre share a framework really shouldn’t be as controversial as this has turned out to be.
Those original Sam Raimi Spidermans are very close to the Marvel formula, so are flops like Green Lantern, and some of the 90s superhero films.

If anyone else is interested in trying to refresh their memories of pre-MCU Spider-Man in advance of No Way Home this December, it looks like at least some of them are coming to The Streamers. Spider-Man 1 and 3 (but not 2, weirdly) are on Netflix next month, and the first Amazing Spider-Man is on Prime.
I've seen Raimi's trilogy a few times, especially the first two, so I reckon I'm sufficiently conversant, but I've never seen either of the Amazing movies, so maybe checking them out might help me make sense of any subtle easter eggs or continuity nods (if Jamie Foxx or Andrew Garfield show up, I reckon I'll be able to work out who they're meant to be from context clues).

Ah, funnily enough "ten days" is when they start appearing on other services ;-)
But yeah good info for NowTV subscribers (of which I am not)

I think Garfield’s movies are the weakest Spiderman sequence but only in as much of them being fine at a time when other superhero films had stepped it up a notch.
Raimi’s Spiderman 2 is arguably still the best superhero film there is

I never did get around to seeing Amazing Spiderman 2.
Kids have been asking to watch Spiderman 1, but I've been procrastinating because I seem to remember the final fight being surprisingly violent for a superhero movie. (Though not for a Sam Raimi movie!)

I was hoping to get my kids into superhero movies with Raimi's Spidey, as I think the "Homecoming" ones are too tied into wider MCU continuity (or maybe not, I dunno - stuff like that never bothered me at their age). But my memory is of how scary the Dock Ock hospital scene is in SM2 - that freaked *me* out in my early twenties so I don't know what two under-tens would be like with it.

The only thing you really need to know in terms of wider MCU is that Stark dies between the Spider-man movies. It's only really Iron-man that ties in, otherwise they work fairly well in isolation.

In Homecoming, it references the NY alien attack at the start and its part of the story

For 5 mins, yeah, but the reference is all that's needed. They use alien tech to make stuff, job done. You don't need to have seen Avengers.
You'll get more from the movie if you've seen all the little references but most aren't needed to make sense of anything going on. Stark's death is heavily referenced in Far From Home, which is why it's fairly key to understand.

Well, the beginning of Homecoming has Peter's home video of the airport battle from Civil War, but I think mostly it was just me thinking the Raimi film would work better as a standalone intro to the character. I'm probably over-thinking it though.
Having said all this, rather weirdly, this year both of them have lost interest in big action movies, which is very frustrating. I thought after going through all the Star Wars with them I could move onto the MCU, but nope. Little buggers.
Also my eldest at least is pretty familiar with the plot of Infinity War/Endgame as some of her friends were going to see it at the time and coming back to school talking about who lived and died.

What? Stone was something like 21 at the time.
All the villains are shit though. Generally the casting for all the previous Spidey movies have been a bit shit, with a few exceptions.

Oh, I dunno. The Raimi movies nailed it with their main villains. Dafoe and Molina are all-time great supervillain roles, and I think Thomas Hayden Church is really good as Sandman. James Franco, before he went all weird, did a lot of good work as Harry, which was sadly all undone in the third film (I'm not as down on SM3 as others, but how the resolution of the Peter-MJ-Harry arc was handled was poor).
Topher Grace was miscast, but Venom was handled badly anyway in that film.
Wasn't Raimi's Spider-Man 4 going to have John Malkovich as the Vulture and Anne Hathaway as Black Cat?
Can't comment on the Amazing movies as I ain't seen 'em.

Ah, Amazing Spider-Man 2, which had Rhino on all the posters and he only turned up in the very final scene. I thought Garfield Spidey was ok - but he was a bit miserable.
My favourite Spider-Man is actually Peter B Parker from Spiderverse - not just because he’s hilarious but also they did an excellent job of showing how easily acrobatic Spider-Man is - much more so than any of the live action films imo.

I thought it was awful myself, probably one of the worst things in the MCU so far. Felt like an awkward attempt to cash in on the comedy cartoon craze, only without good writing or any kind of point. Filler of the worst kind.

The Raimi films were my son's intro to Spidey at about 8/9, and he loves them. Spidey is his absolute favourite superhero. He got bored with the AM series, didn't think they were a patch. But obvs the best is Spiderverse
