Going back to the What if…? Zombies episode, it’s been such a long time since I wanted some sort of official Marvel Zombie content but I hoped it would have been some one off episode. I’ve been a big fan of the marvel zombie comic books for years and always thought they would make a great series if done correctly. I think the only thing they took from the series was when Vision was using black panther as a food source (Zombie Hank Pym was in visions place though).
I know zombies have been done to death and more but I think they would do well with a well thought out R rated zombie series. But it would be tough to use the comics as the xmen and fantastic four feature a lot

What If...? was the worst one this week for me. Just wasn't really a concept I needed addressing, and it ends pretty abruptly.

The problem isn't the length of films. I LOVE a really long film as long as it's good.
The MCU are sorely lacking good films though. It's comics with no stakes. OMG big baddie will destroy the entire MULTIVERSE. How. Will. This. End?
We all know how it will end. We're just there to watch the pretty animations.

Everyone on Twitter was raving about this episode but I thought it was actually one of the weaker ones. Much as I love Killmonger it was really just going through the motions of him still being a big old baddie again.
I think my current ranking of the eps (off the top of my head) would be:
Dr Strange
T'Challa the Star-Lord
Captain Carter
Zombies
Killmonger
[REDACTED] Kills the Marvel Universe
...but for me there's a pretty big cut-off between the first three, which are all great, and the second three, which are all so-so.

The problem in this one for me is that it doesn't really change anything - 90% follows exactly how the movies took place with a few key details changed to no real affect. [REDACTED] Kills the Marvel Universe and Captain carter have similar issues, in that we're basically watching the scenes from movies in animated form, but at least they changed a bit more (and in the case of Carter I thought it was just quite fun in the same way The First Avenger was).
I liked Zombies mostly because it shows a very different set-up for the world and characters, so it's something different and that has it's own value. The better ones, like Dr. Strange, do the same. I like the stuff that's different from what we already know.

Yes, that's a good point. I know that the eps having cliffhangers seems to be a deliberate choice, but I thought the setup at the end of the "Kills the Avengers" episode - with (spoilers!) Fury attempting to fight back against an invading Asgard - was way more interesting than the contents of the episode itself.

The episodes ending on cliffhangers or unresolved is a homage to the comics themselves. I used to enjoy What If and had a bunch of them. Because the outcomes absolutely don’t matter, the writers had carte blanch to kill everyone off, destroy the world, and leave things at an interesting point, as if maybe there’s a glimmer of hope - or, covnersely, when there’s an otherwise victorious ending, set the stage for it to all turn to shit. For example, in “What if the Avengers lost Atlantis Attacks?” (A big cross-over event in the 80s) a giant snake god enslaves and eats most of the earth, but gets defeated in the end. But then, all the female Avengers he’d enslaved have his snakey rape babies and they eat everyone else then take off to other universes to eat everyone there too. I think the Watcher says in the last label “and your reality could be next!” I almost expected the ending of Dr Strange to be exactly that.
In other cases, that ending when a few remaining heroes mouth their determination to turn things around would be the ending. Each issue was a fast moving cliff’s notes version of a storyline that would otherwise have spread over months or years.

I thought the latest one was pretty weak too. I like Killmonger but it felt like they didn’t really go anywhere with it - and some of the story beats didn’t make much sense. For example - where was Shield in all this? The rest of the avengers should still show up as their existence doesn’t depend on Iron Man. And where was the battle of NY? Loki at least should have turned up.
Why did Killmonger pretend that the robots still attacked? If he could control them, why not say so and still become the hero of Wakanda? How come we had no ramifications of him becoming Black Panther - he took the serum and wore the suit and..?
At the end, Shuri is having a secret chat with Pepper as she find the truth. So go to the king of Wakanda with it! Why go to Pepper? I think ultimately for me the story & impact of “What If Tony Stark wasn’t redeemed” feels much more interesting than “What If Killmonger literally outsmarts everyone”. |

I'd like someone to point to anyone else who's managed to do 24(?) movies in a row without (really) producing any duds, and with most of them being at least good.
I mean, most franchises can't even manage 2 or 3 movies before it all goes to hell.
The certain genericness comes largely from the basic concept... they're hero action movies, how many action movies don't basically boil down to 'hero stops bad guy at the end'?
They have at least *tried* to differentiate them, with things like Winter Soldier going for a Cold War Thriller, and GotG going for a comedy, etc...
