Anyone remember if Ant Man has any significant spoilers for the preceding MCU movies? It's on iPlayer at the moment, and I'm thinking it might be a good starting MCU movie for the kids.
I don't remember it having anything major for the preceding movies. Other than Sam being in it, and I guess the general idea that Cap is in the present. I doubt they'd pick up on that anyway.

I doubt it. The Ant-Man movies barely tie in to the other movies beyond that post-credits scene at the end of the second one.

It’s also worth noting that the movies are like the comics. I read many of them backwards as a kid because you’d have to hunt down older issues to explain what was happening in the current one, or to some reference being made. I think that’s just inherent in any kind of never-ending serial storytelling.

In AntMan 2 he is under house arrest for aiding cap in Civil War. So that might be confusing but you might be able to handwave it away.
Edit: also in the post credit scene everyone gets dusted so maybe skip that
Edit 2: how old are your kids? I started mine with the first avengers film and we went on from there and it worked fairly well.

12 and 7.
At some point I'll have to jump on Disney+ as it seems the only reasonably cost effective way to get through 20 odd movies.
But the ones I have 'to hand' at the moment are Iron Man, Thor, Incredible Hulk, Ant Man 1 (on iPlayer atm) and Ant Man and the Wasp. (Mainly because I bought the first 3 back when buying discs was still a thing). I could start with those, but (a) Ant Man is on a time limit, and (b) I seem to remember those being some of the darker / more violent ones.
Actually, they did watch Homecoming at xmas, so I guess it wouldn't actually be their first MCU movie either way. FOrgot that.

I'd have thought 12 would be fine for any of them, but 7 might be a bit young for Iron Man depending on their temperament. My kids asked to watch it a year or two ago - the eldest was 7 or maybe 8 - and they both found the opening war stuff really intense and we had to turn it off. My youngest - who's now 7 herself - is pestering me to watch it again, but I'm not sure.
Ant-Man, I reckon, will be fine. If anything it skews even younger than Homecoming.

I’d say Ant-Man 1 is probably one of the safest and cosiest for family viewing. Its funny without being too snarky and the action isn’t too violent or scary.
It kind of reminds me of being in a similar lineage to stuff like Short Circuit and Innerspace more than a city smashing epic.

It does have the gross shrinking stuff and also the death of the villain is somewhat horrifying - even if the last fight itself is quite hilarious.

Poltergeist was PG. the parental guidance should have been “don’t fucking watch this childhood-ruining terrifying shit”

Youngest spent the day vomiting so we never got around to Ant Man 1, and now it's too late. Le Sigh.

Or just wait 9 more days and buy it legally. In 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos to boot.

Not even 9 days, fairly sure they've brought the digital release forward to the 15th because of the Blu-Ray leak on the web.

Retail, seeing as it's still a Sony product to a degree I believe.

Poltergeist was PG. the parental guidance should have been “don’t fucking watch this childhood-ruining terrifying shit” Surely that’s not right. That movie was fucking terrifying as a kid. I wasn’t allowed to watch it, but obviously I went to a mates house to watch it. I was scared shitless..

I saw Poltergeist as a kid, it really shit me up.
Looking back it's pretty tame tbh but at the time it was a bit much.
I think the best scene these days is the chair scene.

I found Poltergeist 2 far more fucked up as a kid. That old guy was scary.

*pushes glasses up nose* Its an urban legend over here which probably came from the US where it was a PG. It was rated R but Spielberg used his not inconsiderable influence to get it bumped down to a PG (because PG13 didnt exist then).

I had to double check, as I remembered there was something funny about Poltergeist's certification. It was a PG in the US. It was actually originally X rated in the UK (it has since been made 15 in the modern rating system).
I didn't actually see it until I was well into adulthood and I would imagine it probably does work better for younger audiences. I can't say any of it particularly struck me as much more than a bit creepy.
