All Spider-Man film and TV rights (unless they're programmes that are under a certain length so cartoon shows are okay) are owned by Sony when they snapped him and associated characters up for an absolute bargain price of $7M when Marvel were desperate. Buying Insomniac for $300M was a bargain but compared to the Spidey film rights it looks pricey!

Yes they still have the movie rights to the character and connected characters. Every movie they've made is essentially a means to keep the licence. The Disney deal allows them most of the box office profits while Disney gets the merch. Disney have most of the creative control in the deal and Sony like it that way because, well, they were doing terribly before.

Its just baffling that they are making an SCU without the S. Its like making a Happy Days Universe with The Fonz permanently on loan to the MAMU (Mork and Mindy Universe) and trying to get by with films about Potsie.

That's the best description of events I've ever heard that people under the age of 40 aren't going to understand a word of.

Actually, thats a really bad example. They span a ton of bullshit off from Happy Days and some of it did alright.

The Venom films weren’t terrible but they felt very dated. Like they belonged to an era of Spawn, Blade, Ghost Rider and maybe the first X-Men.

I liked the second Venom film, thought it was fun.

I like the Venom films but they're not what I would call "good". It's just sort of my sweet spot, the combination of mediocre action movie, superhero, and Tom Hardy being weird.
If one of the normal people in my life asked me if they should watch them I'd probably say no, not really.

The best/funny bits about the Venom films were where Venom wants to eat someone...

Already seeing people backlash ageist Pedro as Reed. Just wait till they find out that the Silver Surfer is going to get “gender” swapped. Rumours also of Javier Bardem as Galactus.

It was also really weird feeling that Venom (2?) had Stephen Graham and Reece Shearsmith playing Americans in it.

Stephen Graham has played a fair amount of American roles so not too unusual for him and Reece Shearsmith and Andy Serkis have worked together before and as it was mostly filmed at Leavesden (certainly the part that he's in) getting him to pop along for a couple of days was probably quite easy.

There's also some woman off Holby City in it. Pretty jarring.

Nothing is quite as jarring as seeing Rob Brydon appear in Barbie, the cast is full of familiar British and Irish faces already then he pops up!
Again, a film almost entirely filmed in the UK other than the bits of location work in LA.

British tv people in American films is always super jarring for me because whenever I see them I’m too busy thinking about how much like themselves they look to buy into their character

So Madame web is going to be 4 Spider Women against Evil Spider Man?
Talking of 'weird when you spot people in movies in a different context', I just realised that one of the other spider girls is the actress from a kids tv show my kids were really into a few years back, and also Dora the Explorer.
It's weird seeing kids tv stars in grown up roles.

Seeing a brief glimpse of Adam Scott was weird... My brain couldn't quite get to grips with what a good actor was doing in this utter shit.

I can't get over the little girl from Mad Men swearing and smoking dope in that new Amazon horror film that I've already forgotten the name of (Totally Killer? Something like that?)

It's doing my head in that this is a prequel set before spiderman is born and when uncle ben is young, and yet it's in 2001/2003. Make me feel old.

So is this going to actually be the Tom Holland Spider-Man Origin story? That is some convoluted shite.

I'd be amazed if it was allowed to be explicitly tied to the MCU Spider-Man. I think at the moment there must exist some other unverified version of Spidey in the Sony movies. In my head it's Garfield, but if this is an "origin" then I think it probably can't be (as his parents crop up in the movies, sorta).

I doubt this is a prequel to the Tom Holland Spider-Man as it means it wouldn't be in the same universe as the rest of the Sony-verse, as we've seen that Venom didn't belong to the cinematic-616, and we saw that Toomes shifted universe's before he could meet Morbius in the Sony-verse and my god this is one of the nerdiest sentences I've wrote for a while

At this point it could be any spider-man, given all the multiverse shenanigans and various versions of spiderman. I imagine it won't actually really matter *which* spider-baby it is, as they all look the same anyway.
