There's the thing where there aren't really that many big movie stars anymore, other than Tom Cruise and the ageing ones who get cast as mentors/dads/villains. And even if there were big stars, I'm not sure they'd want to play ver2 of an MCU hero.
Can anyone think of any bigger stars that they could cast as MCU heroes?

It won't matter who they cast until they actually find another comic story that's worth doing.
The reason Moon Knight is dull as fuck has nothing to do with the cast.

In terms of next gen of stars, Miles Teller, Austin Butler, Timothée Chalamet, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rachel Zegler, Saoirse Ronan all spring to mind. They also fucked by wasting Zendaya, Will Poulter and as said, Barry Keoghan who could have all been huge for them.

Personally, I don't think the problem with these things is going to be solved with a star injection. To me the problem is mostly fatigue; we've had these products for almost 15 years now, and they're just not as interesting or exciting as they used to be.
The pandemic certainly did not help either. It feels like it would be extremely difficult to handle a schedule disruption when all of your products are interconnected.
Personally I'd prefer it if they took (some) lessons from DC. Get good directors to make standalone things like your Jokers and whatnot. Forget the "phases", forget the plan and the connections, just make things that are good on their own without viewers having to do homework. It still might not be successful, but it would be more interesting to me than what we have now.

But yeah, get Anya Taylor-Joy in more things, she's great. Steal R-pats from DC too.

They wasted Oscar Isaac too. They’ve made some very strange decisions post Endgame tbh.

I feel like we're worlds apart when you think they've wasted Oscar Isaac (who didn't really want to be an MCU character but was convinced to star in his own TV series, which was well-received) and Zendaya (who plays the second most important character in the Spider-Man universe and is a huge part of a trilogy of incredibly successful films).

Yes we are definitely worlds apart. And I’m very ok with that.

Hey, absolutely, I'm not trying to change your mind 😁 but I think you might be as unrealistically down on the MCU as I am unrealistically upbeat about it, and truth is somewhere in the middle 😉

Being well known, like Kit Harrington, doesn’t mean they have the talent and charisma to lead a huge film and bring interest to it, especially when the writing isn’t great in the first place. I don’t hear anything about most of the recent new actors contributing off screen to the same degree that the likes of Downey did.
And yes, Oscar Isaac was wasted on tv, although his Marvel related film track record isn’t great.
They also need better writers and directors. It feels like they’ve gone cheaper recently on a lot of them and also rushing the writing without the talent.

I've not even heard of half of them.
And people like Butler, Clamalet and even Taylor-Joy are kind of similar to Hemsworth/Evans/etc.. in that they got one big role that suddenly elevated them. Which could equally happen to anyone they pick.
But yeah, I think the bigger problem is fatigue/familiarity combined with stepping into the shoes that the 1st gen avengers have made their own.
Even with X-men, they're going to have to follow Jackman's iconic Wolverine.
Imho they should focus heavily on Fantastic 4, Dr Doom etc.. and keep them largely separate from the Avengers-verse. As a bit of a break.
Then focus on the X-Men, but with different main characters than Wolverine, Magneto, etc.. and have people like Rogue, Gambit, etc.. center stage.
Then they can mix back in the Avengers stuff little by little.
If they're not going to do that, they need to give Kate Bishop, Widow 2.0, etc.. their own standalone movies pronto.

I finally watched Eternals yesterday. It was certainly polished, but otherwise pretty pants.
The humour was basically cheap shots aimed at the Indian valet.
The action was pretty meh, almost all CGI. Most of the eternals powers were pants. The whole macguffin-like plan at the end was meh. Basically just all meh.
The post credits scenes seem to basically be setting up two different films? Was that Harry styles? And who is Harrington supposed to be? Will we ever find out?

Harrington is Black Knight not that it fucking matters because I sincerely believe that's been shelved.

I've started to wonder if the Marvel movies only shuffle forward in the post-credit sequences and not the actual films.

They've been very guilty of celebrity post-credit cameos the last few years, that's for sure.

I do feel like they've made a mistake introducing/relegating a lot of people to D+ shows. I have no idea what the viewership of those is, but I imagine the recognition of things like Kate Bishop and even Kamala would be much higher if they'd been introduced in movies rather than shows.
That said, it'll be interesting to see how Kamala fares with The Marvels, as it'll be the first time they're really introducing a tv-first character into the movies. (and Monica too, but I'm not sure anyone cares about her, whoever she's supposed to be)

Monica Rambeau is also Captain Marvel, the title of The Marvels kinda gives it away. But I guess that's too subtle for some people. And you may not care about her but I'm pretty sure there's a fair amount of people who do care about her inclusion.

She's just some bit-part character from a couple of episodes of Wandavision who was a bit rubbish and has some rather unexplained and dull power of shooting light pulses because she pushed through a forcefield.
I assume they'll introduce and explain her a bit better in the movie, for those who didn't watch Wandavision.

I haven’t read all this so not sure if it’s been said, but I’d move the goal posts away from Star Power towards Talent. RDJ is an astonishing talent. Kit Harrington really isn’t. He was well cast in Game of Thrones but has yet to show any versatility.
I think Marvel face three major problems with talent. A lot of “household names” are too old now. Harrison Ford is fucking 80 and too old to play Thunderbolt Ross / Red Hulk (which I think is a feint anyway, someone else will be Red Hulk if at all). Massive stars are all really from 70s/80s movies and they are either decrepit or dead. Tom Hanks may be the last of them, and who could anyone imagine him playing? So problem one: everyone’s too old.
Problem two is really just their run of luck with people either dying or punching a woman. Boseman was a huge talent and incredibly charismatic, and could have matched up to RDJ easily. Jonathan Majors is probably cooked no matter what the truth is.
Problem Three is that everyone it occurs to me to suggest is a younger / interesting / upcoming / non-punchery actor has already been roped into some shithouse Sony Spider-Man spin off. But they did take out Jared Leto thankfully.
I think Simu Liu will do really well, Shang-Chi was a lot of fun. I think a lot of the MCU’s future success or failure will hinge on whether The Marvels is any good and whether they make Fantastic Four a hit. I don’t think anyone will care about Armour Wars or Captain America 4 purely because Rhodes and Falcon are great supporting characters.

I don't know enough about Marvel comics to know who she would be, but Anya Taylor-Joy would absolutely kill it as a superhero. I could very much see her playing a character that could be a team leader figure too.

Oh yeah, that's very true. We know so little about the film, and with no guarantee that any films from next year onwards are going to hit their release dates, it could be anyone from Millie Bobbie Brown to Sharon Stone to Pam Grier.

I think at this point a fair few films, if not all if them will be moved around. I think the first casualty is going to be Thunderbolts which isn't making Christmas 2024 which will have a knock on effect on everything else.

They've been very guilty of celebrity post-credit cameos the last few years, that's for sure. Managing to put one of probably the two biggest popstars in the world into the mid-credit scene of the worst film of the entire series playing a character no one has ever heard of was a very post-Endgame move

I can't help but feel like Thunderbolts is a mistake.
Putting Pugh and all those other characters straight into a team-up movie seems like it will relegate them all to being side characters.
I feel like The Marvels might be the way to go, team up a nu-hero with an established one, and give them lots of screen time.
I haven't seen the Black Widow movie (and I feel like I might not be alone, given Covid at the time), but i heard Pugh's character was good in that.
Did Ghost show up in Quantumania? Hannah John-Kamen is a good actress and the character seemed like they could be interesting. But again, having the character as just a member of a huge team is going to be very Legends of Tomorrow.
It's been said many times before, but it's a shame they didn't really build up or keep any of their villains. They had some amazing actors as villains, and pretty much all of them got killed off in one movie. (not always the end in comics though!) They could've brought back a few of those actors and give them the anti-hero treatment.
They really should have given Loki his own movie.
I guess Chris Evans shows that it's not actually a huge problem for them to grab an actor who has already been in a Sony movie or even a previous MCU movie.
I'm not sure many of the actors need to be great actors, but they need charisma.
