Never played any Persona game before. Big fan of FF VI, VII and IX. Played VIII, X and XII though didn't like them as much.
Persona 4 Golden is currently about £10 on Steam, but Persona 5 Royal is also reduced -from £50 to £35. Both are Steam Deck compatible. Am I best to get the older cheaper one and see if I like it? Or is 5 just the better game?

The vibes are similar. Go ahead and get 4 to get a feel for the series.

P4 is the better game mechanically and storyline in my opinion but P5 absolutely oozes style and feels more modern, especially as P4G is just an uprezzed Vita game.

Loved 4 and really loving 5. Can't go wrong with either to be honest. I would go for 4 first. It's cheaper and be less jarring then going from 5 to 4

I think 4 probably has the better story and characters and 5 is more modern (and still great). I'd agree and start with 4 to avoid having to go backwards in style and mechanics later.

4 is very dated looking now, if that bothers you go for 5. It's incredibly slick.
It's too long though.

Persona games are more about the characters and story than anything else (they're basically visual novels) - I still prefer the dungeons in 3 because they were the most simple and straight forward. Each game has its own unique style and presentation, so I don't think they're necessarily better or worse. You'll probably love the one you play first the most, whichever one it is Personally 4 has my least favourite main cast, but some favourites overall. I'd say you can't go wrong either way. Bear in mind that the translation in 5 is pretty rough (feels like a fan translation in my opinion), so 4 might be a better introduction to the series
They're rereleasing Persona 3 and 4 next year (presumably with some remastering) so you might want to consider that as well

What's P5 Strikers like?
P5 was my first and only experience of the series, loved it to the point I dropped everything else to put 100hrs in to finish it.
Think it's in my PS plus library but it passed me by at the time.

I really wasn't a fan, but I guess if you're a fan of the Musou games you might get a bit more from it. Presentation just felt a bit like an aldi copy, the story wasn't massively engaging and the core gameplay loop wasn't for me.

I enjoyed Strikers but it's a very different proposition from P5. The social elements are all gone and the combat is real-time.
P4 vs P5, I enjoyed the story and characters of P4 more, it's a very funny game in my opinion, but P5 has the better gameplay.

P4G first is a good idea, if you go the other way you will really miss some of the QOL stuff in 5. Both great games that will work well on the Steam Deck though. I prefer the story in 4, but 5 is much easier to get along with.

Both are top tier JRPGs. P4 may feel a bit more dated in looks, but its got a great hook of a central mystery and, personally, I think the social link content is more interesting than the p5 stuff, as well as it's main story. P5 is like P4s younger flashier brother with a fast car and no responsibilities (and doesn't quite fully make sense when you look at it properly). It's still fun and it looks the shit (insert standard comment about how even the menus are sexy and the levelling up filler music is more funky than it has any right to be). They're both fantastic presentations. I don't think you can really go wrong with either, but if you're not sure maybe try the cheaper P4 and then move on to P5 once you're fully won over.
Remember; Everyday's great at your Junes.

Thanks folks. The general consensus seems to be to order P4 whilst it’s cheap and cheerful, which was probably the way I was leaning in any case. I’m not that fussed if it isn’t as amazing looking as P5 - I’m probably going to play it on the Deck anyway

I enjoyed P5 and I liked most of the Musou games I played (such as Hyrule) but got bored by P5 Strikers abd found the first boss annoying. May go back to it one day and try again though.
