Easily a better franchise than Star Wars, and although classically nerdy has been overtaken by Star Wars, Marvel etc in terms of toxic neckbeard fandom.
The Motion Picture - 8/10 Wrath of Khan - 10/10 Search for Spock - 6/10 The Voyage Home - 8/10 The Final Frontier - 6/10 The Undiscovered Country - 9/10
Generations - 6/10 First Contact - 8/10 Insurrection - 5/10 Nemesis - 4/10
Star Trek - 2/10 Into Darkness - 1/10 Beyond - 3/10

Slow motion picture: 4 Khan - 7 Spocky wock - 6 Nuke the whales - 6 Uhura fan dance - 10/ rest of the film - 3 Undiscovered country - 5 Pink cloud dream space - 4 Borg - 7 Shit one that's shit - 3 Dune buggy Tom Hardy - 2
NB: haven't seen 7, 9 and 10 since release.
TL;DR Trek films are fucking shit and it is better suited to TV. By a trillion miles.

I know the reboots are a contentious mess, but Simon Pegg aside I think everyone can agree they absolutely nailed the casting for the main crew. The villains less so. Eric Bana seems to think he’s in a pantomime, Cumberbatch does some good snarling but is distinctly not Khan, and Idris Elba is absolutely wasted. Mostly agree, although I intensely dislike Nu-Kirk's personality. He lacks any of the charm or irony of Classic Kirk. Not a casting issue though. Remaking Wrath of Khan was an enormous misstep. Even in the best possible world it was going to fall short, and, as it turns out, we are a long, long way from the best possible world.

I think what a lot of people miss about Kirk isn’t that he’s a reckless rule-breaking teenage rebel without a cause but an extremely competent and capable commander who can make those off-book calls because he knows exactly what he’s doing.
JJ’s Kirk felt more like he was written by someone who was basing him on an impression or caricature of Kirk than basing him on the Kirk Shatner actually played all those years.
But then I’m pretty sure Abrams or someone near him basically said out loud that he didn’t like Star Trek and was going to turn it into his own thing.

He's a bit of a cheeky lothario who loves a quip, but ultimately a seasoned pro. I'm pretty sure that Abrams Star Trek was just an extended job interview for Star Wars.

I do like how a ranking the franchises thread was started to not derail the film thread, yet itself has been derailed by Star Trek.

Apart from undiscovered I would bump to 9. Like you I also quite like the new ones. I am rewatching TOS at the moment, everyone is so different to I remember, especially Kirk, he is a sober, thoughtful brilliant tactician, it is bones who is the ladies man.

Bones was clearly a lady's man. Just need to check out his civies in The Motion Picture. Total disco pimp.

I honestly didn't think Ascension was that bad. I liked the faster pace, reliance on parrying, and the large scale spectacle still worked IMO.
It was the second PSP one that felt like the low point to me. The first one was impressive, what they managed to do on the portable hardware. Second one really felt like more of the same, with nothing new added.

Indeed, and one of the things I liked about Old Trek (which might actually be Current Trek again?) is that the Enterprise had been around for a while pre-Kirk and that Kirk himself had built himself up to Captain.

To my knowledge, it's only Adams Trek that does the rags to riches story.
TOS - Kirk is just captain of a ship and we follow him
TNG - Picard is taking on a job, having been a captain before and gets the honour of the Enterprise
DS9 - Sisko is essentially given a poxy little rehab job managing some abandoned space station in the arse end of nowhere, but stumbles into a war
VOY - Janeway is a captain of a smaller science ship

And yea I got through it before it got patched, but I’ll never forgive it.

U R tripping if you think the first one is only as good as the third. Honestly, didn’t have too many issues with the third film that I didn’t have with the first one. Vinnie Jones was shit but Tyler Mane as Sabretooth wasn’t exactly Cinema gold either.

The first one automatically loses two points for that Halle Berry line anyway.

If I remember, the first is reeeeally dated now. It feels like a full on 90s movie, where the rest felt more modern.
Crazy to think the franchise is nearing 25 years. That's like looking back at Bond from the release of Living Daylights.

Watched them all again recently. First two are as good if not better than anything MCU have done.
Logan was weirdly boring on a second viewing.
