Just here to say that The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists is a masterpiece, the best Aardman film, the best Hugh Grant performance, and quite possibly the best animated movie of the century.

A Christmas Carol Adaptations.
Scrooge (1951) I have proper soft spot for this. I watched this, as I recall, on Christmas morning, before I had turned six. Cuddled up with me Mam. It is great nostalgia, tells the story well, and has a great cast. 7/10
Scrooge (1970) I think I saw this after Star Wars was first released. I remember being excited to see a film with Obi Wan in it. I know Sir Alec Guinness saw Star Wars as a chalice on his career, but I watched more films than I would have because of the cast. Simply put, it is brilliant. I am not generally a fan of musicals. But this works. Some of the FX are dated, but young me marvelled at them. 8/10.
Scrooged (1988) Until I read a blurb about it, I did not realise that Bill Murray’s only other big screen appearance between this and Ghostbusters, was little shop of horrors. I thought he was in loads of films, VHS rentals must have coloured my memories of the period. Frankly, it isn’t great, some cheap gags, and far too schmaltzy American sentimentality. 6/10
Muppets Christmas Carol (1992) Now we are talking. It is easy to dismiss this, but Sir Michael Caine was clearly taking it seriously. It is a masterpiece. It feels like a proper heart warming story for all the family. 9/10
Black Adder’s a Christmas Carol (1988) Considering it is played mostly for laughs, it still manages to play with your expectations of a well known story. 8/10
Mickey’s A Christmas Carol (1982) I love this one, the animation, characters and humour fit so well into this version. Ol’ Pete as the Ghost of Christmas Future, was terrifying. People can be down on Disney animations as an art form, but this is probably them at their finest. 10/10.
There are a ton of other versions, but these are my favourites.

Scrooged is great, at least as good as Muppet’s Christmas Carol

I have a soft spot for the Jim Carrey Christmas Carol. Never knowingly underplayed.

Resident Evil - 6 Apocalypse - 5 Extinction - 4 Afterlife - 3 Retribution - 2 Final Chapter - 2* Welcome to Racoon City - 6**
* reduced to a zero because of the death and stunt accident.
** its not as well made as RE but I probably prefer it in all its cheerful amateurish attempts to be faithful to the games.

A 24 hour ban for ranking Prometheus high.

I'm curious where the AVP films sit in that ranking.

I’ve only seen Alien, Aliens and Alien 3. Never seen Allen or Alan
Ranked 1. Alien 2. Aliens 3. Aliens 3
I’ll have to watch the rest someday

I'm probably in the minority here, but I've always preferred Aliens to Alien.
Can't really disagree with them getting progressively worse after that point, though. (with the AVP films somewhere at the bottom and Romulus TBC)

I definitely think Aliens is more enjoyable and entertaining but it’s not the better film

Its definitely the most fun.
Resurrection always reminded me of the kind of story you got in the spin-off novels and comics. I’ve always liked it but then I was unbelievably hyped when it came out because it was my first new Alien film.
Prometheus should’ve just been an Engineer film rather than a Xenomorph origin story. That might’ve solved a lot of its problems in a stroke. Although its a bit rich of Scott to act like he owns the Alien universe when it was Dan O’Bannon and Giger who did all the story and concept work. It is interesting to see Giger’s unused Dune/Harkonen concepts still alive in Prometheus too.

You can't beat the original for atmosphere. Horror at its best. Aliens is a great action film.

I think, for most people, they are basically interchangeable at the top. The only reason I rank Alien higher, really, is that its the OG. Its the film I wish came out every week. Something entirely new that blows your tits off.
Tbh, looking at the list, it is a pretty strong franchise (AvP excepted). You never get the same movie twice (bar Romulus which is one of the reasons I disliked it so much) and they are all worth a watch.

It is a bit of an apples and oranges comparison I suppose. One is an excellent horror film and one is an excellent action film with a smattering of horror.
I just find Aliens infinitely rewatchable compared to the first that I've only seen a few times. It isn't necessarily a better film, just a more enjoyable rollercoaster ride.

As a duology (!) you can’t beat Alien and Aliens. Best horror, best action. I lean towards Aliens as it was the first one I saw, being young and feeding off the VHS scraps of older brothers taping things off the telly. But Alien is a masterpiece too. I am a fan of Alien³ for similar reasons as it’s the first one I got rented for myself but it’s also a good entry with some amazing set design.

On theme with the season:
Poltergeist 9/10 Poltergeist 3 5/10 Poltergeist 2 4/10 Poltergeist (2015) 3/10
Don’t really need to talk about how good the original is but I was surprised by how much more I prefer 3 to 2. It’s just a better movie or even just an actual movie. Stuff just happens in two, it’s just a load of random shit that happens. Barely any plot and what little there is makes no real sense. At least 3 isn’t just more of the same.
The 2015 one is yet another ‘why did they bother?’ remake. It follows the same beats as the original but does everything a bit worse. Literally pointless and makes you feel a bit angry they wasted the earths resources creating it when a perfectly fine version already exists.

Anyway
BttF 10/10 BttF 2 8/10 (great but loses its way over time) BttF 3 7/10 (entertaining but doesn't have that wide eyed wonder of the original)
