As a rule of thumb if you see something out in the open and it’s gated off, you’re backtracking through there again later

I'm maybe halfway through judging by quest numbers.
I'm very much waiting for some spectacle to happen. Come onnnnn this series used to be so much fun.

This really should be called the Adventures of Worf and Alexander. I’ve turned it into a Star Trek game and I can’t revert.

Yeah I'm getting near the end I think and there aren't actually anywhere near as many epic battles and moments than I expected. A couple of major moments fell utterly flat as well. I enjoy the game the most during the epic cut scenes and qt prompts . Maybe a generous 8/10 currently.

I had to Google who she is. A guess a very little bit. Nope I've not changed the title once since creating it.

Having finished I’d def give the game 8/10 possibly more, depends on end game stuff. I’m looking on it favourably due to it being an aaa solely single player game, no tacked on multiplayer and no season pass or micro transaction shenanigans. I did feel compelled to keep going for the story, and there there were a couple of incredible scenes where I got the feels: Story spoilers the beginning 2 hours, Kratos choking Heimdell to death, Odin killing Thor, Kratos Beating Thor, The duel Valkyrie fight But no back to back epic moment after epic moment every scene. Basically I just want to see Kratos Spartan rage and destroy things. I though it was an entertaining story and the combat is fun and there is a significant end game.

The fast travel system was a bit shit in 2018. Took an absolute age to unlock it fully, then when you do you need to sit through dialogue every time you use it before the exit appears. Plus you can't just hop to another realm quickly.
Clever way to mask lengthy loading from HDD on the PS4 I suppose, but it was only a few seconds after I'd exhausted all of the dialogue on PS5.

I'm enjoying it more than the first one, although it does feel exactly the same. That's no bad thing as the first was a quality game, but I wasn't blown away back then. It's extremely well made, looks wonderful and I'm finding it very moreish. But it feels 'safe'. Again, that's fine as it's a blockbuster game. My main complaint is the tone just doesn't work for me, they are trying too hard to be serious and important. It shouldn't be a family melodrama, I can't really describe it but it doesn't work in the fantastical context for me. It's not schlocky enough! And yeah, the epic fights are very sparse so far. The exploration is fine, but you never find anything interesting! Also, I'm a bit annoyed they're not doing a third solely for PS5, I would love to see how gorgeous that could look, and not having to squeeze through gaps every 5 minutes would be nice.

It's also way too long. I've solely focused on the main quest, never really got stuck on anything puzzle wise and not had to replay many battles and it looks like it will be almost 20 hours.
Who knows, when I think it's over it might go on for a while longer! Looking at you rdr2!! Right near what I think is going to be the final area you're made to walk around again for ages in the snow talking about feelings for the 639th time in the game!!!

I think Safe is a good word to describe the game. Not as far as many of you - just met the somebody you are looking for early game, but I’m still searching for that thing that will elevate the game to a solid well made game into something great. Just feels a little stale at the moment.

I'm also just concentrating on story but did get stuck in the Mines for a good bit, I'm at 16 hours played and don't feel like I'm even half way through. I would love to beat before Callisto is out early Dec. If we are talking enjoyable games that out stayed their welcome towards the end...by not ending and I think Days Gone takes it. I loved the game but it was at least 7 hours too long.

I'm about 30 hours in, having done most of the side content across which I've stumbled, and still really enjoying it.
If I were to rate it now, I'd go for 8.5 or 9.

All done. Just over 19 hours. Very disappointing. So so safe. Pretty much no new gameplay elements. A good story but kinda of drums the same point for most of it. Thor and especially Odin were amazing and made up for most of the negatives.
Maybe 7 out of 10.

I wouldn’t really consider it a sequel more of a part 2 to the first game. Refined a bit but mostly the same game.

The Atreus bits are a misstep in my opinion, they really slow it down too much.

20 hrs is "way too long" now?

Depends on the game. Civilization being 20 hours is too short. God of war which is a walking simulator with arena combat then more walking at 20 hours, for me, was too long. 10-12 would have been so much better for this game.

20 hrs is "way too long" now? That depends entirely on the game. If a film went on for 20 hours then it's way too long. If a rollercoaster went on for 2 hours then it's way too long. I guess my point is, is this game anything like a film and a rollercoaster? Is it the gaming equivalent of Pirates of the Carribbean ride?

20 hrs is "way too long" now? That is way too short for a GOW. I will be working through the full game and quests and expect it will be at least 45 hours+. I am guessing some here just raced through it and missed many of the side quests some of which are big.

Interestingly, I quite like the things that other people seem not to. The pacing, the story, characters and the way it builds are very appealing to me. I haven't finished it yet, but I'll be well over 20 hours (probably twice that) and I've loved every minute of it.
There's already a ton of stuff that's not story related but I've had to leave and go back to that I'm itching to face when I'm tougher and I will get all the collectibles. I must have spent a couple of hours trying to get back to the abandoned village in Vanaheim, for example.

While I agree that some modern games are way too long - Assassin's Creed Valhalla springs to mind! - I think Ragnarok is well paced and free of needless bloat.
Sure, they could've split it into two 20-hour games and made the Norse saga into a trilogy, but I'm glad they didn't.
I even enjoy the Atreus sections, given how different his combat style is when compared to that of Big Daddy Kratos.
No, it doesn't attempt to reinvent the wheel in any way; however, given the amount of wheel reinvention that went on between God of War 1.0 and the 2018 reboot, I neither expected nor wanted it to.

20 hours would be great for this game if it had some of the spectacle of the older games.
I appreciate the more mature direction the series has taken but the pacing just sucks here in my opinion. The mix is ok when you're between main quests and just pootling about exploring, but when that's the setup on the side content, the main content absolutely needs to kick things up a gear and so far it has failed to do so at nearly every single turn. I spend a bunch of time exploring lakes, sand dunes etc, when I get back to main quest I expect some bloody excitement, some big set pieces, some grand vistas.
Instead it's usually just more puzzles back to back, more walking and talking, a small combat encounter here or there, all set in the same caves and corridors etc I've seen before.
Really wanted this game to build on the foundation of the last one and instead aside from some slightly improved enemy variety it feels like it's just gone completely sideways. I'm well past half way I think and I'm *still* waiting for some wow moments. I want to rock up somewhere and be excited to explore it, have plenty of big combat encounters and set pieces. Sure, do the puzzles and the walking and the talking, I don't mind it. But the balance is so, so off and the environments so far are just disappointing. Just contrasting it against some of the places you go in 2/3, it's a real shame.

I’ve started to enjoy this a fair bit more over the last day. Put some proper time into it having the week off and started to get in a rhythm with it. I think the first section with Atreus kick started that really. Just spiced it up a bit.
