I don't really have an opinion on the quality of the writing, or whether the moment was earned, but... ... if you've ever sat and held a dog you loved as it died, that kind of content in a game/TV show/movie/etc. is bound to hit home.

Ulythium exactly. Well, that and the fact that I care more about dogs than people, tbh.

I mean, thatโs fundamentally why itโs lazy and bad storytelling. It doesnโt create emotional reactions of any build up or world/character crafting it just goes guys remember when your dog died and sits back.

Or, it's used as a narrative device to show a now more grown up Atreus dealing with loss, but in a very different way to the opening of the first game. The tugging at heartstrings of the player is a bit obvious but that's not the only thing that's going on imo.

It's actually a really important character in Norse mythology, I was surprised to see it so fleetingly.

The herald of Ragnarok, iirc? Also, Loki and Angrboda's son...

Late/end game spoilers: He comes back anyway, so it renders the scene even more manipulative. That they also setup several other character deaths that could have easily served as a narrative point for character growth makes it worse too.

Also, fwiw, (non-specific but broad spoilers) much like the first game, if you know Norse mythology you can guess a whole bunch of the story beats and so on. Some changes, some different interpretations, but the basics are all there

Admittedly, my knowledge of the mythology itself is very old indeed* but that's kind of the beauty of it, eh? There's no one definitive version of the stories (iirc), so they can be retold or used with artistic licence.
The whole series, from the first, is grounded in that, right?
*we all played Valhalla, I suspect.

Wasnโt a criticism, just a comment that refreshing your memory on the mythology could spoil some stuff.

I've put a good few hours in today. At the alfheim temple progress wise. But two stand out moments that made me laugh
Fuck off, I'm busy! From the squirrel and Mimir saying that Mr T might actually be enjoying smashing things up.
It's the little things:)

Some of the meta stuff and in jokes are fun during the conversations while realm traveling. Thereโs a couple of direct references to Kratos showing up in various fighting games.

I should have seen it coming, but wasnโt expecting there to be a third weapon added about half way through. Good stuff.

I'm not necessarily arguing against that perspective, Grems - for whatever it's worth, I found the writing in GoW 2018 and Ragnarok (thus far) to be good, but not great - so much as copping to the fact that it got me, for better or worse.

Finished it. 38 hours on my save. Fucking hell. Going to let it sink in a bit before stating thoughts. For those have finished it.. the endgame seemsโฆbig. I thought I did quite a bit of the side content and there still seems shit loads more left to do. Not complaining

A warning for those that have finished the game. There are still spoilers for the post main quest content. I know. Of course there is. I stupidly thought I was safe to go on GoW Reddit having finished the story. There a couple of things regarding main characters that are revealed in the post credits content I wish I hadnโt read about instead of discovering myself.

My only complaint with the game so far is the over-reliance on Freya's sigil arrows as a puzzle-solving technique. I get that they were going for something different to throwing the axe
but I think they overdid it, especially with such a finicky mechanic (or is it just me who finds it finicky?).

I struggle with depth perception a bit on mechanics like that so I struggled a bit too.

I'm playing through the GoW 2018 reboot... Considering there are blocked paths, locked chests, secret locations etc. is it safe to assume that at some point I will gain the ability to fast travel and revisit these areas?
