I've read suggestions that if Cavill were to be replaced (a prospect I already hate), Mads Mikkelsen could be an adequate choice for an older Geralt and I think I agree; he could look and sound the part...
...on the other hand, Mikkelsen replacing Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, didn't do Fantastic Beasts any favours...

Is Mads actually a good actor, or was he just a good stoic viking in Valhalla Rising?

Mads is great you heathen. The best Hannibal Lecter too.

I’ve an open mind for several reasons. I’m hoping season three has some good closure and sees off Cavill in a fashion that you could take as “the end”. I’m also - while I’m not happy about him leaving to play Superman, a character I could not give one shit about - I’m also willing to give LH a chance, because I thought Cavill was a weird choice to play Geralt until he turned out to be great in the role. Who knows, Liam Hemsworth might also surprise us.

Comments as you would expect. Seeing some there and elsewhere already saying that "this is [their] last season even if the show continues"...

first 15 minutes of s3 - has the scenery got a little more polystyrene and the acting a little more wooden?
edit: they spent some good coins on choreography tho

I had no idea the new season was out this year. In my head it was in 2024...

I'm now up to date at the midpoint of S3.
Pretty good and fairly similar to my experience of previous seasons. First few episodes a bit confusing and grappling to remember who was who and what they wanted and why. Needed a fair bit of second screen googling and subtitles on (for character and place names) just to keep up.
Episodes 4 & 5 were very good, and it was really hitting it's stride. Annoying to have to wait till end of the month to continue. I didn't actually realise it wasn't a full season released at once, as I would have waited.
Fwiw I imagine Liam Hemsworth will be fine. It's not exactly the most challenging of acting gigs and there's plenty of material from the games and series that show how it's done.
It's becoming Ciri's story anyway.

I still need to get around to Season 2.
Are they mostly following the story of the books?

I didn't know it was broken into two parts either. I resubbed for a month on the day it released to watch it, Black Mirror and Extraction 2 as I always sub for a month and binge a few things. Quite cheeky of them to split it into two parts and release them just a couple of days over a month apart as it means the second part falls just outside my months sub meaning I'll have to get another month.
Cheeky like I said but fairly smart on their part I suppose.
Enjoyed the season though just like the previous but I don't go in expecting greatness as it's just a "watch while I have dinner" show. Not sure about Liam taking over but I've only ever seen him in two things and he wasn't the main character but he was fine enough as an actor and it's not like the role here is that difficult.

Does the TV series spoil anything for the game?

not really, maybe not at all. It's mostly filling in the gaps around the world rather than revisiting particular narratives. In terms of timelines, the telly is by and large a little earlier than the Witcher 3 I think

Maybe in the sense that you might come away thinking The Witcher is a bit shit.

Maybe in the sense that you might come away thinking The Witcher is a bit shit. I thought people were generally happy with the series?
I've already started The Witcher 3, so no worries there. It's great so far. There's a lot of background missing though
