Hmm, on the fence with this atm, finding it a bit of drag with too much crafting required and woe betide you die, you end up having to walk back through some weird portal. Crafting shit for bases and keeping NPC's alive is boring as hell. And why is there so much wind all the time.

I have not played this game yet. It's on my longlist. But I gotta say, crafting is one of the worst modern gameplay mechanics. Sure, if the entire game is based on that premise and rewards you suitably, as in survival games like Subnautica and Valheim, then I get it. But bolting it on to other genres is a massive turn off for me.

I caved and got it on gog (~£15), about 4 hours in and enjoying it.
Tbh I quite like the base building and survival stuff, it's thematic and fits with the survival elements and the passage of time.
It's got a good loop, go into the zone to explore, find stuff, maybe push the story, come back to base, feed people, upgrade, do some training, then sleep and into next day.
Exploration is great, I love poking around dilapidated and post apocalyptic buildings. Some quite freaky moments though!
Really like that you can send people out to do missions for you (even story critical ones it seems?) if you don't want to play them yourself. You have to make sure you balance scavenging and driving the story, to keep everyone happy.
Story is intriguing enough to make me want to see what happens next, but not the best part of it. I do like the (sometimes hard) choices you have to make, and it's interesting to see how that might impact the zone and your future missions.
I also like how weather can affect things as well.
All-in-all enjoying it.

Zulu, glad your enjoying. Your team mates can do reconnaissance only on main story missions, this includes thinning out the enemy soldiers as well though 👍

Just done the first day. Was massively over cautious and probably could have done it in half the time. Still getting used to it I guess. I have a sight and a suppressor on my revolver now though so that should help. I’m assuming you end up going back to areas multiple times as there were some places I couldn’t access. So I guess you get the lay of the land for each area. I assume the stuff you craft there traps, environmental stuff etc stays there for future visits?. If so I quite like that. I think I may have inadvertently killed Anton by not pressing the button in the opening section. Or maybe he dies anyway. Olivier certainly seems to think it’s my fault anyway Anyway, seems like it will be fun once I’ve I got the mechanics down a bit better.

I think it's a bit crap, I got it some time back to scratch the Stalker/Tarkov itch but it's nothing close.

I tried again for a couple of hours over the weekend but it's just not scratching that itch for me, peculiar mission strategy, I can't be doing building bases and keeping NPC's fed etc and too darn dark and all the interiors look the same. Sent it back for a refund.

Yeah it is really dark. Annoyingly so. Maybe it was just due to me playing in the day so too much ambient light. Died as the black stalker thing attacked me in the middle of a fight, then had to get my stuff back which was a bit annoying . I might change my approach a bit to more guns blazing. The stealth just takes too long and I don’t have the patience.

I'm quite liking it, actually. I think the resource collection is just an excuse to explore the environments. The environment is the primary character. In that way I think it has more in common with those walking simulators. If you were expecting Metro / Stalker it's probably very disappointing.
Also, did you guys not find the gamma settings?

Yeah I guess I could mess around with the settings a bit.
I’ve got an AK47, crossbow and some armour so ready to deal some damage in the next mission.

The fact that it penalise you for killing people should tell you something.
It's more like a Rogue-lite in a lot of ways, I don't really faff too much on a mission, maybe poke around a few buildings or investigate points on the map if they're enroute, but I only really do what I am there to do and get out.
You return to the maps so much anyway.

Also, did you guys not find the gamma settings? Sure but it's just all so, well dark. It wasn't a world I wanted to explore, all the interiors look the same too. No matter it's gone now.

If I come across any NAR I’ll usually kill them rather than try to sneak past. It will probably end in a firefight anyway so might as well be on my terms.

Still not totally sold on this. I like the premise but I’m finding the core gameplay a bit frustrating. Finding the controls a bit fiddly and the shooting a bit frustrating. Might well be me just being a bit shit though to be fair. Will keep going for a bit, hopefully it will click. Also, the wife is kind of annoying. She seems mad all the time. Maybe it’s because she’s waited 30 years for husband to come save her. Which I guess is fair enough

Fired through to completion, and somehow missed one trophy, which is somewhat annoying but eh. Not bad overall, didn't really care too much about the story (and it's quite easy to accurately guess the beats) but the trudging around and exploring was enjoyable enough - it thrives on a great atmosphere, and it's almost up there with the Metro games, which is surprising for what's seen as a "budget" title. I'd wholeheartedly recommend higher difficulty too, as even on normal I was swimming in materials, and I'm wondering if it's possible to redo the heist finale guns blazing, albeit with regenerating liquid round railguns ? Definitely worth it for the £10-12 I picked it up for.

Yeah, think I suffered a glitch too, read up on it afterwards, and I definitely did what was required, so it's the only other option.

This is on sale this week. I don't really have the intention to play through it all but I really fancy mooching around a fairly accurate representation of Pripyat in the rain, soaking up the atmosphere. How free would I be to do this, or are there baddies every few feet etc.

It's not like I need another game but this game specifically appeals because of where it's set, and it looks pretty atmospheric to boot. Just have a certain itch for a setting sometimes that I need to scratch. Just would be put off if I can't have a nosey about at my own pace.

You should be fine at a nosey around pace. Jump in a smallish area, little pockets of enemies, and leave when you want, whether you've completed the objective or not. It's actually really decent at atmosphere, and it's not until the endgame where the enemy numbers ramp up, and there's a persistent but random threat hunting you.
Bit of a slow start, but after the first 5-6 days it gives a bit more freedom, in unlocking Metroid style tools to access little hidden bits, gain a better knowledge of the maps, and the whole game finished in about 20 days for me at least so it isn't too long.

oldschoolsavant Is it multiple maps as opposed to one big area then? Are the maps a decent size?

oldschoolsavant Is it multiple maps as opposed to one big area then? Are the maps a decent size? Yeah, different little areas. Probably takes <10mins at full sprint to cross some of the larger ones, but they are packed with lots of detail, hidden bits, verticality. IRC there's one area with a bunker I never worked out how to enter. You revisit them throughout the game, so you get to know the lay of them, which helps if you're going stealth/traps style, but they have variety. So there's a couple with heavy wooded areas, some more built up, the radar area with military camp etc, about 6/7 total. Every day you have to choose which one you're going into (based on story/what rewards you want) and it's beneficial to explore a lot to get more loot. Think I described it as mini-Tarkov, jumping in, hoovering up the materials to base-build, kill/KO some enemies, do the objective, get out. Repeat the next day, with upgraded weapons, equipment. And it's damn close to what a Metro DLC could be if you're a fan of those.
