So now my first proper session on it has sunk in, there's not really a bad thing I can say about it yet. I got up to the Woodside Apartments and have made a bit of progress there. Absolutely shitting myself. Up til now you can tell stuff has been expanded upon but it's been done so naturally I had to check a few times that a particular bit wasn't in the original. The combat is intense and visceral, each encounter feeling like a proper fight for survival and by the end of it James looks and sounds properly fucked. I initially tried to take all the lying figures in town on before being forced to do what I did in the original and try to get past without alerting them. Combat is harder than the original and enemies don't just wibble up to you and wait for you to twat them. It feels (and this may be controversial) more like Homecoming, in that you have a dodge and the enemies have a few more attacks. It needed that though. You can't have enemies wibbling up to you waiting to be hit in this day and age. It works really well, with some encounters going my way, and others getting a bit messy as I get a bit greedy / sloppy. I never know when they are actually dead either so end up stamping and hitting them for ages after as James literally screams with exertion.
I'm on quality mode at 30fps and it just looks and feels fantastic. The fog is something else as well. The atmosphere is equal to the original and evokes exactly the same feeling of dread and melancholy. Voice acting is spot on so far. And that soundtrack, as I'm walking slowly though the deserted streets, traffic lights hanging and swaying gently overhead, the sight of shapes moving ahead of you in the fog, the radio crackling. Trying to think of a negative. Sometimes it's finicky picking up items.
I've always been a Silent Hill fan over being an RE fan and this is the holy grail of remakes. It may shit itself later on, but judging by the reviews I'm not expecting it to. I mean, I've been wanrting this for so long I've been buying every shite game that evokes even a fraction of SH, including Stray Souls ffs which was... Oh god. No.
wunty, I trust you are not typing this using only one hand... great to hear your thoughts, my copy is coming tomorrow.

Have you seen that scene yet? You know the one. I'm curious what they've done with it given the increased fidelity/visibility and how open to interpretation is was

I've not yet got to Woodside, so still super early game, but what I would say is the gentle/seamless expansion of explorable indoor areas in the town so far, even just small one-room storefronts etc., really does add to the overall sense of place. The general atmosphere and ambience is incredible.

Pyramid head in the kitchen with the manikins
Man, Cluedo was pretty effed up in the early 2000s.

Can anyone report what the performance is like?
I watched the digital foundry video and it looked like the fps dropped quite hard in the beginning. I dont want to be playing in 30fps at all, I'll be sticking to just the performance mode.
Not sure weather to wait for potential updates or not.

Haven't tried performance as I think 30fps works well for this and it seems pretty solid.

No, I can't be far away though.

Is the music the same as the original? Not exactly. Yamaoka has recorded new versions of it all, but it feels the same.

Put it this way, it sounds the same when it plays. It’s like if you find an old version of a tune you made and get the chance to redo it, augmenting it slightly but keeping the soul of it the same.

Again I feel this is the right course to take and it’s yielded amazing results.

I dunno. I know what you mean, but the original soundtrack is really iconic. I'll be forever comparing the two.

I'm definitely buying this. I'd like a patch or two first because it's Bloober. It'll be one of those games I buy for the Christmas period. Glad Wunty is loving it.

It depends how much you think it's changed tbh. Granted I've not heard it all yet but what I've heard sounds like the original. I mean I know it's new, but it feels the same. All the melodies and recurring motifs are there. Don't know what other way to put it.
Again though, the original game and the original soundtrack still exist out there. This doesn't erase that. The two exist concurrently. For me personally though... I'm not sure I'll ever have a reason to revisit the original now. I've played it at least a dozen times over the years and from what I've experienced so far, this will be the one I play.
Edit: A dozen is a bit extreme. I've played it enough.

I wasn't going to buy this yet. I was going to get the PS2 out and give the original another play through first, but that's a lot of effort!
I was so sceptical Bloober could pull this off, but it sounds like they've absolutely nailed it. You love to see it.

From what I've seen, the combat looks a bit silly with all the ducking and weaving from both James and the monsters. I wouldn't credit the monsters with that much intelligence- I don't think any of them even have eyes
Combat was never the focus of SH2 and you can mostly just run past them in the original (looks like you're forced into a lot of encounters as well)
I'm sure the new combat will appeal to lots of people though
Also, is Maria wearing a leather dress?

Ha, it seems like Stephanie Sterling doesn't hate it, which is interesting given their opinion of Blooper

You’re right. It’s better they just wibble up to you and stand there waiting to be hit. Not sure why you’re happy to keep slagging it off despite how well received it’s been, particularly as you obviously have zero intention of buying or playing it? Maybe I’ve missed something here but it all comes across as a bit… I don’t know. Troll-esque.

Not having a go, just can’t understand where you’re coming from. Fair enough if it was getting panned or you bought it and didn’t enjoy it.
