Downpour was great - I remember enjoying it a lot. I'm pretty sure I've played Homecoming too but would need to check what happens in that - was that the one with big throbbing veiny things? Actually, maybe don't answer that... And I agree with TEW2 being a Silent Hill game, certainly in terms of later Silent Hills. Why didn't you enjoy TEW2 wunty...a case of it being too different from the first one? I loved it but couldn't get on with the first, but perhaps I gave up on it too soon. Honestly man I have no idea. It was just lots of little things that added up and started to irk me. Performance was first, with a horrendous amount of pop-in and slow loading on textures marring my exploration. The first part of the game was decent and had some nice creepy moments but I just lost more and more interest after that. I liked the fact that the first one was more difficult and more off-the-wall, as well as the fact you don't know what the fuck is happening. This one was too well explained, too neat in it's presentation, more straightforward. Don't get me started on the fire enemies or whatever crap came after it.
In short, I really don't know, but I really bounced off it.

Silent Hill 4 has some incredible ideas with some terrible execution - definitely a peaks and valleys sort of game.

wunty Fair enough! I'd probably struggle to say why it grabbed me so much tbh, it was far from perfect. Sometimes it's just the right game at the right time for me.

It's very much worth it though. I bought a copy a few years back. Paid a wee bit for it, but it's Silent Hill 2 innit.

It's a keeper. The fact it still plays so well, and is still so fucking creepy, is a testament to it's creators.

The original PC port of SH2 would be my go to. Just download it - Konami lost the source code and released those shitty remasters, fuck em. If there was ever a game it's OK to nick, it's that one. I imagine the PS2 version is easily emulated too
The problem with 4 is that the valley is the whole second half of the game. The very worst escort quest that affects your ending, so even if you force yourself through it, you can still be punished for it. I do like the game though
I also loved TEW2 but have never got far in the first game. I think a part of that is the way it's separated into levels. It feels really disjointed and makes it difficult to get into as a survival horror

Actually, the worst part of SH4 is that if you do a poor job during the escort quest and they take too much damage, rather than just getting the bad ending, the game doesn't give you enough time in the final sequence to do what you need to, which is even more frustrating. I reloaded quite a few times trying to do it before looking it up and realising it was already fucked The spoiler will tell you how to avoid the bad ending, but nothing about the ending itself, wunty There's also another thing you have to do in the game, that you probably won't first time, that will net you half a bad ending. Inorder to get the full good ending, you need to do both things

2 (and 3+4) seems to be abandonware on PC, so might have a look at the fan enhanced edition. 4 is available on GOG to buy.

Yeah, for some reason it's listed on the abandonware site along with the others, but links you to GOG.

SH1 freaked me out more than SH2, although I know for many it's the other way around. But I'd never played a game like it before so it's really stuck with me. And on nurses: let's not forget Lisa GarlandPerhaps not looking her best there. I remember her being hotter. I am very much in love with Lisa Garland and, yeah: that’s not her best picture. Origins is good, if safe - draws a lot from the other games. Lisa looks weird in it

A ground up remake of 4 where they address the gameplay problems it had and better execute its concept would be amazing.
Although given I don’t have access to any of them right now a proper HD polish and release of the originals onto Playstation would be very welcome too.

I have very fond memories of Silent Hill, being introduced to it by my Uncle and him not saying anything about the opening sequence and just letting me experience it with no inclination of what would happen. I was immediately hooked and spent hours in that school, such a great game.
I think Silent Hill 2 is the better game, and I love them both, but my memories of the franchise always come back to that school (and opening sequence). I've played them all except The Room (never had the chance at the time and for some reason I've not tried since) and am gagging for a new Silent Hill to play.
(And I loved the Gans SH film, visually what I was hoping for when first announced. That sequence with the screaming babies is one of the loudest scenes I've ever experienced in there cinema).

The intro to the first Silent Hill is still the most unsettling experience I've had in a game. Just how it all comes together, the sound design, the camera angles. Unsettling.
Haven't played it for a long time but the game in general still sticks with me. Just remember I did quite a lot of running about in a panic in some of the later stages.
All that said, I do prefer Silent Hill 2, as I quite like the more personal tale of James's grief to the stuff about cults and such.
3 was good but maybe a bit too refined in some ways, still had some great moments, and the transitions into the hell world had some great effects.
I liked 4 until you left the titular room, but I really didn't enjoy the escort quest, and the ghosts were just fucking annoying. The creepy two baby-headed monster might be one of my favourite enemy designs in the series though. Could be unsettling when it just stands, and points...

Nah, I'm super stoked: can't wait for a trading card game and arena-based hero shooter. And MTXs. Lots and lots of cosmetic MTXs.

Think this is the first time I've actually dreaded a game announcement. Maybe it's a new meta approach. Creating dread not in-game, but with announcements of crappy games. The real horror story.
