Oooo, I bloody LOVE the splitting maul - very close to getting one. Is it as good as it looks?

Excellent stuff. Perhaps also needs putting in the manly man thread (can't remember if that made it over or not)

yes - but - 95% of what I split I'll do with the little husky axe, by the time it needs a maul I'm more inclined to just throw that round back on the pile and try again next year once the beetles & woodlice have softened it up. I'm lazy, is the takeaway

Interesting. I went for the splitting axe mainly due to the weight - I can swing it for a hours and it's not too tiring. Plus, it can handle some pretty sizeable rounds if you know how to use it properly. I split some big bastard beech rounds yesterday and will soon have a bloody shitload of sycamore to split.

yeah, a maul doesn't make it easier or take less energy per split - the opposite - it's only advantage is to split the stuff an axe can't, and as you've found, there's not much that an axe can't. I probably use it as often as a sledge for driving wedges.

I was sceptical about how good the large splitting axe would be at taking on big rounds, especially when you see the size of it (it's small compared to a normal felling axe). But it's so good. I want to get the small version for one handed splitting of larger logs/smaller rounds, but they are on the pricey side.

Amazing. So businesses that churn out shit into the air for products and profit don't have to do shit, but people that have a log burner in a house in rural areas where they might get cut off, get targeted instead.
That's an ingenious idea, isn't it.
