So, I have played a bunch more of this, and I’ve been enjoying it a lot more than I expected. I’m somewhere around tier 33, which means I could earn the next hero unlock without paying anything, in theory at least. In practice I am torn. I wouldn’t miss the £8.50, I know, it’s the business model I dislike.
It’s currently not possible to earn any skins at all, though, unless you pay. The rewards from the weekly challenges need to be multiplied by 10 - at the absolute minimum. I can live without loot boxes, but the idea that you’ll have to grind for months to get enough coins for one skin is ludicrous.
There are also some balancing issues. Zarya is ridiculous (and apparently getting nerfed). Sojourn is also OP - I expect she will get a nerf at some point too, which is a shame as I like playing her.

It is pretty disheartening to see these cool new skins, even voice lines and stuff ans realise you can only get it with real money. I dont think I've even seen any of the new ones in matches. Somethings gotta change.

To make things even funnier, there's a new skin for Mei available to purchase on the store. Except Mei is still unavailable to play right now. Really gives a bad impression on what Blizzard's priorities are.

The dev team have confirmed today that the PvE campaign revealed at the announcement of the sequel, the entire justification of having a sequel at all..is no longer a thing. There will be PvE story missions released as part of each season in OW, but all this about a story campaign, skill trees etc is no more. Pretty fucking embarrassing.

As you say, that was the whole raison d’etre of calling it a sequel, rather than just the same game with an F2P funding model. I will give them this much, though. They have been producing new stuff. The current season’s space opera game is fun. They have also started awarding credits for battle pass progress, so that there is a way to buy skins etc. without paying money. I have paid the £8.50 or so for the last couple of seasons, and I think I’ve got my money’s worth out of it, although I still shout at the screen a LOT. Whether I’ll be happy to keep paying is another question, but I guess we’ll see.

I suppose the promise of some form of PvE missions with a story being told depending on the season is at least something, it's not a complete cancellation. But all the things to give it depth like the skill trees, persistent hero progression etc all gone. And I can't envision myself playing the story missions beyond just the one time, if past experience with the Halloween event etc is anything to go by. Then when you think of all that came from it, years of inactivity on OW1 because of them working on a sequel. The delay in OW2 even coming at all. The PvE stuff not even ready for the time of release. Now this, just all adds up to horrible mismanagement. They struck a goldmine, their very own Avengers or X Men that people wanted to see more of, it's just a rare thing for companies to achieve. But along the way they have just kept repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot. I still enjoy playing the game every day near enough and will do for some time, but you also gotta make peace with the fact that OW isn't going to be any bigger than it currently is now and be content with it as a PvP game with regular updates and thinking about what might have been. Hopefully it'll continue to get more years of support.

I still haven't played it and was waiting for a single player campaign to come first, guess I won't now.

The single player content will come in August with the new season, but "conveniently" the first 3 missions of the single player campaign are included only within the premium battle pass. Reports from journalists and OW streamers who got to play it all say to temper expectations (as if they couldn't already be tempered even more). And once those 3 story missions are done then you'll have to wait for the next batch of 3 missions...in 2024.
There's a 3 part animated series coming fairly soon to Youtube as well, perhaps something they should have done much earlier, but I think a lot were hoping for something similar on the level of Edgerunners or even Arcane.

Season 6 is out now, including the PvE missions, a new hero, a new game mode, progression system and a Hero Mystery challenge mode that's coming out later.
PvE missions are about what you expect. Archive missions with some more budget. Nothing new gameplay wise, enemy AI is pretty basic. I dont even think the scrapped talent system could make it anymore interesting than it is, possibly why Blizzard cut loose. I hate the way it's delivered too, 3 missions is not enough. Got about 90 mins of gameplay I prob won't repeat, costing £15. Its not worth it. The gameplay isn't horrible, just more of the same, your reason for playing is for the hero interactions finally delivering some payoff in that regard.
The biggest thing that can happen in OW is a new hero and I like Illari a lot. Forget she's even a support sometimes, but she's a threat at DPS even and her ult can possibly do some serious damage in combination with crowd ults like Zarya, Orisa, Sombra. Healing is really strong and fast too. Good stuff. Interesting to see Lifeweaver getting even more buffed this season, gonna start playing more of him too, he felt better after recent buffs.
