Hey, has anyone here played a Fatal Frame (or Project Zero) game? I had a lot of fun with the first three entries on the original Playstation 2 (almost 20 years ago!) and have completed the Switch port of the fifth instalment this year. Unfortunately, I didn't like Maiden of Black Water (the 5th game) as much as its predecessors. It is broken down in short segments that are tied together via walls of text, to me the story felt a bit unfocused when split over so many (five!) different characters with their own chapters. There are also several chapters that seem to have been inspired by the "paranormal activity" movies, where you monitor sleeping girls ahem, a house via surveillance cameras and wait for ghosts to show up. Those are quite tedious. The gameplay with its unusal battle mechanic (taking pictures of ghosts) is still fun, and while the animation sometimes comes across a bit stiff and detached, the graphics are still a major improvement over the older titles. I had some other gripes, especially with the skimpy clothing of the main characters on their rainy, nightly mountain trips... especially as "wetness" is even a gameplay factor!

I don't think anyone here knows of them, certainly I don't. They sound nice. Still have 4 and 5 to go through, I hate those Wii controls so maybe I should just wait for the Switch version of 4 that was announced recently

...aaaand to add to my qestion: Has anyone played part four, Mask of the Lunar Eclipse? As part five sold quite well with the new versions, we are getting a port of the previous game to modern systems in 2023: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb6MjZanM9wI might give this another shot!

I played some of it, not enough to form a definitive opinion, but I liked what I played. It should be rad on Switch.

The remake is a possibility if done well though. I did play the Wii Project Zero 2 on the Wii with Wiimote though so probably could have managed...

Played Fatal Frame 2 back in the day and it creeped me out in a way that no other game bar Silent Hill 2 ever has.
Don't think I have the stomach to dive back in.

I haven't, but I was very interested when I saw the trailer for Maiden of Black Water. Shame that I soon heard that was a rubbish one. Is the other one coming out meant to be one of the better ones?
I'm going to get my Steam Deck sorted with emulation soon, so perhaps I can use that as an excuse to... acquire... some of the old ones.

I remember I imported it and homebrewed my Wii to play it. Loaded it up once, then the second time I turned my Wii on it had autoupdated and I gave up because I didn't want to go through the process again.

Played the first two back when they were released on the original Xbox. Not played any of the series since.
Those first two games were really good, though. Really quite creepy at times.

Like many, played the first two when they came out, and loved them.
Not really my sort of thing anymore.

Imported 4 at launch, then played it again when the patch was released. It's the weakest in the series IMHO, although less tedious than 5 in many ways.
I wish we'd get a trilogy remaster already. I have a soft spot for 3 personally, even if it's admittedly a kinda flawed game.

I have!
Still got 1,2 and 3 for the PS2, done all them. Couldn't get on with 4 because of the controls on the wii. Haven't tried 5, and tbh I'm not sure I will - the first 2 were the main ones for me.
Genuinely extremely creepy games. It's the ambient sound half the time.

Still the scariest thing I’ve ever played. Project Zero on the Gamecube with the lights out was terrifying. As much as I loved the game, I couldn’t normally manage playing it longer for an hour or so.

Gamecube? The first 2 came out on PS2 and Xbox... (With 3 being PS2 only)
