Some positives from the annual fixture against the Burnley rugby team: - Ramsdale was absolutely superb, sorry I doubted him. - Tomiyasu looks ideally suited to the Premier League. I'm not sure we'd have got the same result with Leno and Bellerin. Clear upgrades, which is pleasantly surprising, and the summer recruitment continues to look decent overall. - Odegaard is impressive (wish others would press with him) and nice goal. - Gabriel also superb which is more expected. Really missed him at the start of the season
Negatives: - created enough promising situations in the final third to score 3 or 4 but the final pass was routinely awful. Pepe, Saka, Auba constantly misplaced, over hit or under hit relatively simple passes under modest pressure. Not Arteta's fault, these guys are professionals and it's nothing to do with systems if you can't play a simple through ball or cut back. I don't know how we fix this. - White seems a bit of a liability. Of all the summer signings, he seems the most questionable. Not ideal as the most expensive. Clear footballing ability but doesn't look like a centre back. Almost as if we were determined to sign another David Luis, flaws and all. At least he's young and should improve. - Why is Partey STILL so unfit? I know he's had injuries but he's had a full pre-season, then an international break off and no midweek football and he still looks knackered after an hour. WTF Thomas?

Good result today but really frustrating that the ref and the VAR official bottled the penalty and the sending off. One thing I don't understand is why the VAR official gets to decide the angle the ref sees on the pitchside monitor. The TV replays showed multiple angles where it appears to be a penalty but the ref is only shown one angle on a loop.
More of a cynic than I might suggest the VAR ref is trying to engineer a particular outcome.

@muddy, Chuffed with an away win there. Small steps imo - there's more to come from this side I think. But it's not going to happen immediately. I thought the CBs dealt well with Burnley's aerial threat and generally we were quite comfortable.

Thanks for sharing this. Horrible horrible disease than needs some serious looking at in the UK and Ireland.

It's so insidious. And as someone who relies on football for work, Merse must feel so exposed given how pervasive betting companies are. I love a gamble but thankfully am able to get my kicks out of small stakes. Can easily see how it can get out of control quickly.

Super 6 is really horrible for this. Guess the score and hey look at what you might win if you bet that.
Needs more control.

Must be so hard to keep out of it. Talk sport are terrible with it too (or at least used to be). Talk about something for an hour - now let’s hear the odds from out betting partner.

Watching MoTD a few mins behind. Those stats of Milner today are phenomenal. Gotta be up there as one of the best free transfers ever.

Jimmy Greaves has died Before my time as a player but I have vicarious memories from my dad, and of course Saint and Greavsie as a kid. Injuries in ‘66 meant he doesn’t have the reputation of England’s best ever player that he possibly should. Sad story when you know it all. Legend.

Off to the home match with Leicester in a bit, feel that we might come unstuck again ala Everton a few weeks ago.
My seat at the Amex is about 25 metres behind one of the goals and in five seasons of watching us against Schmeichel he's always been really strong and unfazed. He also banters with the fans a lot, which is fun.
Obvs early into the season but its weird not being frustrated already. I fear the universe might correct itself soon though and we'll turn stinky for a few months.

I'm here too, and to have the obligatory moan about modern football, why the fuck are we here at 2pm on Sunday for a match that's not on the telly. No reason we couldn't have had a traditional Saturday 3pm KO.

Leicester played in the Europa, so have to play on Sunday. And it's 2pm so it doesn't clash with the 4.30pm KO.

Always been slightly puzzled why Greaves doesn’t get wider recognition as probably the greatest English player ever. Still the top goal scorer in the top division. Only player to get 40+ league goals in a season post WW2. Scored 30+ in 9 seasons. Still 4th on the international list. Part of the 66 squad. Even went to play for Milan long before that was the done thing.
Don’t think the man even has a FUT card, but Peter Crouch and Joe Cole do.

It's all just filed under "before the PL". Same as Dean, Lofthouse, Matthews etc. Few people around who saw them play and only fans of their clubs are aware of their accomplishments. Ian Rush too possibly. Very little footage either.
