Maybe the carbon output from stadium aircon will raise global warming enough to cancel out their effectiveness

Looks like I'll miss most of it with those times. Such a shame I get so distracted by cheese in the fridge that I can't WFH all week.

Those are actually great times for me (WFH). Will get to have so much of it on and that's always a light time of year for work anyway.

City's parade being less than a mile made me giggle.

Am I the only person completely disengaging from the world cup? I have no desire for it. It's a sham, brown envelope funded pile of bullshit that gives us yet another (third consecutive) fucked up football year, when I just want normal again.

I would be if it wasn't for the simple fact it'll be coming home.

City's parade being less than a mile made me giggle. Seriously? Just do a balcony presentation if you don’t have enough fans for a real parade

It's going to be tough given there will be so much footy on telly, it'll get watched.
What grinds me is the assumption that football fans like the world cup enough that it's acceptable to piss around with the league to accommodate a terrible choice of venue. I want my festive fixtures that I pay to go to...
It's also annoying that when England finally get some success, I'm at the lowest ebb of patriotism with the fuckwits in this country so it's a struggle to even 'get behind the boys'. My instinct is to hope we lose.

I agree with the first part of your post. The thing is, whilst there's probably a few million fans who love our league clubs etc, there are tens of millions more who have only a passing interest and will watch the national teams more.

I’m sure once the World Cup starts I’ll get swept along. I was determined to hate the Russian one but it was great.

I don't get the hoping we lose because of other fans part. There were people on here who wanted us to lose the final of the Euros because of it.
That's just weird.

It's my instinct as of now as the thought of the 3 lions meatheads lording it up over other countries /Boris wrapped in a st George's cross is so depressing.
In reality I want England to win. It's just frustrating that 20 years ago, it would have been a dream. Now I think I would feel that it's not entirely my victory, despite being entirely English. Even saying that gives me a tinge of shame..

I can understand it, even as someone who travelled watching England a lot in my youth. That element has always been there though, going all the way back to the 70s. The 90s went some way to rid us of that image but it always reared its head every now and then. Brexit etc has led to more nationalistic nonsense though, it's true, so I can understand not wanting to be associated with that. I prefer to focus on the team, and the manager, all of whom seem thoroughly decent.

I support Man United, I don’t hate the England team as much as I used too (the gerrard, lampard, terry, Cole years) as most of the players seem like decent people now. But I could never support them. The stuff with fans and boris etc just makes things worse.
However I do support Germany (then argentina) and have done since I was a kid, which I know is weird.

There is an interesting difference in how some people perceive international football as either a patriotic or sporting endeavour.
For example, my French wife would stop supporting France in the event of any unsporting behaviour e.g. Zidane, diving as believes that is more important than blind patriotism.
Yet is still full of pride in the circumstances of their win in 98 and the positivity and togetherness it generated in France at that time.

By "plan on boycotting it", I mean I'll genuinely try to not watch it on television on the odd occasion I'm actually not at work, but despite my best intentions I'm not sure I have the discipline and self-control to avoid watching the odd game especially once it reaches the knock-out stages. With that said, a lot of the group fixtures fail to excite me on paper anyway, with a few notable exceptions (Spain-Germany, Poland-Argentina, Mexico-Argentina, Portugal-Uruguay, Croatia-Belgium, and England - potentially - versus Wales or Scotland).

I always just support the British teams, or Ireland if they got there. With NI only getting to one Euro's in my lifetime I need someone to support. Though I seem to be on holiday a lot when finals are on, and always so many dickhead England fans taking over the bars with their bullshit.
I don't bother watching as many matches as I used to. When I was younger is have tried to watch every match.

Only just seen this from the weekend in the Bulgarian league. Tsarsko Selo had an injury time penalty to win and avoid relegation, but their owner wanted another player to take the kick so stormed on and forced the original taker off the pitch - guess the colour of his skin...
The penalty was then missed by their captain, the club were relegated, and now the owner has announced he's going to fold them. Instant karma.

Those are all incredibly hateable players to be fair. Coupled with all the flying patio furniture, crap football and endless tabloid stories its amazing anyone liked them then
