It's just the rules. Rice knew exactly what he was doing and he knows it's a yellow. I don't specifically care for the rule or that people should be sent off for it, but Rice knew he was breaking the rules and so he got penalised.

Except it's not (PGMOL delivering), because there'll be another fifty of those this weekend, all ignored.

It was probably the correct decision tbh, but it was also about as soft a yellow as you can possibly get. Certainly doesn't warrant a second yellow that completely changes a match. Referees just basically need to use common sense more - and if they do want to rigidly stick to the rules, then at least be consistent with it!

Should we show leniency for second yellows though, just allows a booked player to be petulant

No, but I don't think Rice was being obviously petulant tbh. Pedro's kick earlier seemed much more petulant, and he wasn't even booked.

Not really comparable - Rice did to gain an advantage and stop Brighton having one. It wasn't a mistake. Only the guy punted it up to no one.

It's just that it feels like another episode in the genre of 'let's make an example at Arsenal's expense' in an early season game. Add it to the list with that Xhaka straight red in his own half for 'not playing the ball', Martinelli double yellow in one passage of play and the second yellow for Tomi time wasting on a throw in. None of these were objectively wrong either. But as the season panned out, did prove to be outliers in terms of harshness of referee interpretation. Nothing really changes. It's just frustrating that we always seem to get done by these arbitrary, and often temporary, early season interpretation shifts before they settle back to 'normal' without comment. I'm not sure there's bias here either. I just find it incredible how many times this has happened early in recent seasons. Anyway under the circumstances a draw is a pretty good result.

Every team can probably point out 4/5 instances in which their team was very harshly done by / rules not applied consistently. 3 games into a new season and implying there’s a ongoing conspiracy to make an example out of Arsenal seems a bit mad.

The refs pick and choose when to give yellows for those kind of things.
Last season Dalot got two yellows and a red for clapping towards the ref after a shit decision. Half the time refs won't give anything for it.
But if you're following the rules to the nth degree, he deserved the red. Same as Rice today.

I looked at my fantasy at 80th minute of the matches there to see a mega points haul for Michael Keane. Only for Everton to go and mega self implode.

The thing about defending today is that the ones that were obvious red cards were not red cards. Stop justifying bad referee decisions with ooh it was the letter of the law.. Tell me why Havertz having his throat grabbed wasn’t a red. Is that not the letter of the law?

I love these anti-Arsenal agenda collages that appear within seconds of any borderline decision going against them.

It's not a conspiracy. I'm bemoaning a combination of our luck, our player stupidity and general refereeing inconsistency. Together combine for some frankly bizarre second yellows and reds incidents over the years.

I can't argue with the need for greater consistency.
But those images above aren't for the same offence.

Fine for all the rival fans to come out the woodwork and troll us, but have some opinions on the ref.. oh no HOW DARE YOU

Well fuck this ref and a booking for kicking the ball away? Okay so where's his? On a note.. some managers get in trouble for being less out of the technical area than that.

I’m sure all teams have their examples but it’s like when Martinelli got that double yellow. Maybe technically correct but the ref doesn’t need to get involved and impact the game like that.
It’s the sort of decision you’d expect in the 2050 PL season when the game is refereed exclusively by AI.

I get the Arsenal fans feel a little hard done by, but the reactions a little OTT. I guess in the good old days dropping two points wasn’t the end of the world. But when you need to be perfect to win the title it changes perspective a bit so I suppose I kind of get it.
