Pretty sure Delta Force's demo wasn't in the main game but i might be wrong with that.
Was the MGS 2 demo different to how the first section ended up? I feel like there was something that played differently. I played that so much.

Seem to remember an ST demo disc - James Pond Robocod(?) had the full game or much bigger, unintended chunk of the game, but only if you could the get the correct pickups in the right order or something?
Very hazy on those days.

While we are on the subject of breaking demos: the Layers of Fear early access demo on Xbox offered the first area of the game, which then just ended with a black screen after you reached a certan point. When the full game was released, the early access version was obviously removed from the store... only, people who had it in their download history could still download it, and the black screen was gone. So you could play the full game, with the caveat that there were no achievements and you couldn't save (no big deal, since the whole game is like three hours long).

Danganronpa V3 had a noncanon demo with a different character if I recall.

Freespace 2 had a unique demo. At least one, but I think it might have been two missions. One of those starts off with a massive battle already going with I think three Cruisers and Corvettes directly in the player's face with one of them exploding right at the beginning. There were two Argo-class transports to escort out of there.

I think Warcraft 3 had a short prologue campaign that didn't feature in the main game.

I wanna say that back in the day this was more or less standard? Something tells me that lots of Amiga cover-disk demos like Lemmings, for example, were custom levels/experiences. Possibly even in the Spectrum days too. Those days were amazing, I swear I spent more time playing the actual demos than the games. I remember when demos were hundred of lines of code printed in the back of games magazines that you just had to copy perfectly line by line and didn’t work 90% of the time.

I still have copies of the "Input" partwork that showed elements of Basic and some Assembler week by week for the 8 bit computers.
So I would type in and build the stuff over many WEEKS to find that, indeed, these were also shit.

Not completely unique, but I recall the demo for FEAR was like a trailer of the full game, with various sequences from the full game stitched together. Going through the exit to one area would take you through to another area a few hours further into the game. Neat idea that I'm surprised more demos didn't copy.

Having just started the full game, the demo for American Arcadia is a bit different. It's basically the first level, except it removes a fairly long playable intro that explains the basic setting, and also removes some sections in-between that are used to give further explanations and highlight what the stakes are.
Essentially, it's like a spoiler-free version of the game's start.

I'm always gutted how the franchise was treated over time.

Actually, who owns the franchise at this point? I know it was published under Sierra for the OG. I don't know what happened after that. A Nightdive remaster would be day one for me.

A remaster would be great. The original was a stunner at the time, but aged really badly pretty quickly.
Wikipedia says Sierra sold the franchise to WB back in 2008 (the sequel was actually originally being developed without the FEAR name until the purchase). No idea if they still own it though; the franchise has been dormant for over a decade now.

On Steam, the games are still sold under their banner. I guess they just don't know what to do with it. Probably can't find a way to turn it into a GAAS.

I've got a vague recollection that there was something special about the Viewtiful Joe demo on the GameCube. Not sure on that one, but Billy Hatcher had three unlockable games, via the GBA link, one of which was Nights. It was fucking weird but great at the same time.

I just downloaded FEAR to check and yeah it's branded as WB even in the splash screen.

The Carmageddon PC demo was the entire first level, and the pedestrians had red blood. By the time the full game came out, they’d had to change the blood to green. (Yes of course everyone modded it back to red, but still) Carmageddon 2 demo was a single race from the full game but it was presented more as a destruction derby style event. I remember playing that demo over and over for hours, probably because I'd just got a new GPU at the time and it ran really good. By the time the full game came out, the actual structure of racing took more of a focus and that demo race played out differently enough that I wasn't as interested.

I was going to say Half-Life 2 Lost Coast, but I don't think that's even a demo: it came out late and was only available for owners of the full game, which kinda defeated the point. It was more like a standalone DLC chapter Lost Coast was a DLC add-on and it's selling point (apart from mote HL) was it was one of the first mainstream games to push HDR. I vaguely remember some magazine PC spods spaffing themselves over the colours and lighting ...
