It gives Ecosse the shits something rotten, though.
I feel like I know far too much about which foods do that...

I wouldn't mind finding some msg too just to see if it makes much of a difference with some Chinese recipes I do and apparently it is the missing ingredient that elevates home made KFC style chicken. I've taken to adding it to curries and stir-fries and it definitely gets a bit closer to that 'takeaway taste'. Plus it's not actually as bad for you as everyone seemed to think previously (funnily enough that idea seems to have been founded on anti Chinese sentiment in America decades ago). We've already done this but it does affect some people badly, makes me properly ill. Disgusting stuff.

When I was a child our dog was sick and the vet said to feed him plain things like rice. All it did was turn his meaty vomit into one of ecosse’s dinners

Roast beef dinner here, with roast potatoes, carrots, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Gravy for the family but not for me. Still avoiding wheat, and have been increasingly well all week until drinking a barley cordial this lunchtime - now stomach ache. So, not just wheat: gluten, maybe? Bah! Anyway, roast beef

Midweek roasts ftw.
Good that you're getting to the bottom of it at least, even if it means awkward diet changes.

dfunked Cheers, mate: much appreciated. I SO want it not to be gluten as a ) I was brought up on “bread with everything” and b ) it feels like jumping on the bandwagon somehow. But, if it is the answer, and I’ve been through phases of believing so for the last 15 years or so, then I can do something about it.

Roast chooken for me on the weber, probably with carrots, spuds and onions. Gravy of course and I really fancy some Yorkshire puds. They may not happen though.
edit- carrots didn´t make the cut as we don´t have any so puds it will be.

Anyway, roast beef What's up with your stomach? Reason I ask is that mine has gone off too. Certain foods are really making me feel bloated almost immediately after starting them, yet others I'm ok with. Hm, you mention wheat, and I'm struggling with shop bought sandwiches at the minute. Maybe it's the bread. I'm on sausage and mash tonight - I'll see how that goes down Also, to everyone: there's nowt wrong with having some msg in the cupboard. A tiny sprinkle over certain meals makes it very nice. Lob the snobbery in the bin.

I'll admit I was a bit wary of MSG before I found out about the history behind the "MSG is bad for you" codswallop. It's probably time I picked some up in fairness.

There's a difference between MSG (naturally occurring, in tomatoes, parmesan, seaweed etc.) and flavour enhancers which mix factory produced msg with loads of salt and other stuff. Flavour enhancers are typically used in highly processed foods and to compensate for poor ingredients. Each to their own and all that but it can get in the bin.

quadfather Bloating, horrendous stomach pains, weight seems to have piled on a bit. Literally waking up in the morning, twelve hours after eating, with those feelings, as well as straight after eating. Been off wheat for almost a week and, possibly unknowingly, therefore off gluten as well, and then one drink of orange barley cordial has kicked me where it hurts. I’ve been through this (undiagnosed) for years now, on and off, and quitting bread/biscuits/cakes/pastries seems to help. ecosse Thanks, my friend. Much appreciated.

Yeah, but if you just buy the msg on it's own, in a bag, you can lightly sprinkle it over dishes. I don't cook with salt at all, so I only need a tiny amount. Plus I'm not overloading the salt because it's in the msg and that makes up for me not cooking with any salt. So yeah, works for me, but maybe not everyone's cup of tea.

Yeah, when you’re talking pure msg there’s no chemical difference between natural and synthetic. The body cannot tell the difference. Pre-mixed shakers are a different story, and may have a bunch of other stuff in it, but it’s inherently nothing to do with msg.

It’s the flavour enhancers, aromat etc. or chicken powder that destroy me. Whatever that combo is wreaks havoc but I could eat seaweed and Parmesan till the cows come home with no issues
