It's a free viral advertising platform, customer service, contact centre channel and most if not all multinationals businesses and organisations have an official twitter account so I can fees being charged.
Maybe that already exists, dunno.

Who cares if 10% of users create 90% of content.
Revenue isn't on created content, it's on engagement by the other 90% of users. They see the ads and promoted content between posts.
They could start a tiered post charging system, eg. Entities/firms worth other X bn have to pay per post.

Well, I mean, Twitter do. It means you have a disengaged user base who use the site in a narrow way. If you can increase engagement, metrics go up, you sell more ads and generate more user data. Facebook sells user data for up to $900 per person. Twitter does not.
Not that I’m advocating data harvesting, it’s just hard to make money when most of your users don’t really do very much

Sure, but the problem with a suggested new model whereby you pay to post but not to read is that this is a very saturated market anyway, through all the online content being generated by existing publishing houses. You take away Twitter’s USP by trying to monetise creative engagement and it becomes a thousand tiny soapboxes with fewer and fewer people reading. And this doesn’t generate enough cash to service his debts, as he’s banking on a large proportion of his userbase ponying up. Paywall introduction normally has a dogshit pickup rate. AND this doesn’t address the EU telling him to stop being a hate speech fuckhead or lose his richest audience. It’s a solid popcorn moment, I can’t wait to see how this evolves. /popcorn

Considering verification was brought in to stop celebrity/public figure impersonation and to know who’s who, I’m not sure “pay $8 a month and get a blue tick!” is as well thought out as everyone thinks.

The investment banks that provided the credit without collateral surely must have done their working out to see if the interest could be serviced, at least no?

According to the Financial Times they expect to lose a lot of money on the investment. I have no idea why they chose to do it, but then some banks still gave trump money so fuck knows maybe they just see it as a write off that they can ride to avoid paying tax or something that only people with shit tons of money know about.

I really hope for Musk that he has a lot of money stashed around, because I think he's gonna have to write off a 44 billions loss very soon.
Might be just about time to leave Twitter myself, but I want to see where this trainwreck goes from the inside.

I’m keeping my Twitter account but also I never actually tweet or like or retweet and I’ve got it adblocked to fuckery and back so I’m in some small way contributing gleefully to its inevitable downfall.

The one thing Musk hasn't got is liquid assets, everything he spends is leveraged against his stock ownership.
I'll keep my Twitter live, I'll keep eating virtual popcorn watching Musk continue to fuck himself.

Yeah, they don't care. The taxpayer will bail 'em out if shit hits the fan.
ETA not that $44B is a big sum for them, tbh…

I joined twitter last year, kind of like it and would hate for anything to meaningfully change. I'm happy in my own little corner of the algo. As for blue ticks don't really care but seems odd to charge for KYC, yet it is funny to see millionaires arguing with a billionaire over 20 bucks.
Colour me meh, hopefully he'll get bored with it pretty quick.

The ticks were just supposed to be confirmation that someone was who they said they were, having it so anyone can buy one makes them pointless.

I don’t think any of the complaints have been explicitly about cost, more that they’re changing the customers of Twitter from being the advertisers to the consumers based purely on some ad-hoc tweets from Musk.

Also just the audacity for him to go "I really need your money lol" having just spent 44bn on it. A sum of money that's 109,999,900% higher than the average wage. Spaffed on a company that has 13bn worth of debt.

Come on now he's a genius, I'm sure if he fires enough people he can work all of this out. It'll be like that Simpsons episode where Burns and Smithers run the power plant by themselves.

Quite funny seeing Martina Navratilova, among other well known figures, say they never even asked for verification it just happened.

I suspect in a lot of cases it’s their agents/PR folk who did the back and forth with Twitter for verification.
Now it’ll need to be their accountant, I guess.

Yeah, it really sucks that only the rich and famous get a blue tick, let's make it egalitarian, POWER TO THE PEOPLE.
for 8 bucks a month

Musk is basically now the worlds most famous beggar AND car salesman. Grats to him I guess.
Given that the verification stuff was introduced in response to potential lawsuits about it not doing enough to protect people from impersonation, could charging for verification open up to the same lawsuits again?

Imagine all the pranks one could play with just 8 dollars per month.
Can you change your handle once it's verified?
