I mean the whole palaver around contactless or even chip and pin in the US was a bit of a joke. Even in 2015 I ended up paying for something with them taking a carbon copy of the credit card. At a fucking tech trade show of all places.

Was is probably the keyword there. Contactless is the standard (except for Walmart, annoyingly, as they want to force people to their “Walmart Pay” option for contactless), and chip and pin is the default for all cards and accounts.
I paid by watch in some podunk gas station in the middle of nowhere and they didn’t bat an eyebrow.

I'd been paying for all my transport on TfL contactless for 3 years at that point. I've not been since 2019 due to Covid and what not, but it still wasn't normal then.

International transfers need a kick in the balls from someone (not Elon). Last time my family tried to send anything internationally via bank, Nationwide acted like they were asking for the keys to the kingdom and took about a month plus various paperwork to get anything sorted. After that I just told them to Friends and Family it through PayPal.

Yeah my wife retains her US bank account almost purely for the ability to move money back and forth more easily.

In the US if there is a query about a payment at a vendor the credit card company will still ask for confirmation by ringing by phone. And they will only use landlines.

What do you mean? That a bank needs to confirm something with the vendor, or that you, the buyer, need to confirm something? Both have happened electronically for me, the former through the store’s POS, the latter via automated text.

Yup, buying stuff in shops.
You have to verbally confirm your identity to the bank.
Also the store has submit written counterfoils for every card transaction even if it's contactless. It's usually done at the end of the day, which is why you always see staff at the till for ages after the store closes.

For international, I always use (transfer)Wise. Saves loads on fees also.
Also gives you a locally denominated debit card wherever you go.
When I lived in the US (moved back to UK in 2019), square terminals for contact less was just getting wider adoption, mostly at the more hipstery places.
No doubt apple pay has pushed stuff.

I….have never experienced that. Could be bank or store specific I guess, but not my experience. I get a fair few verifications on my card because the fraud protection is hyper vigilant, and I’ve literally never had to do it speaking to a physical person on a landline. I haven’t worked retail but I have setup some transaction CRM stuff before and that’s all just flat out electronic. I know we did our end of pay period stuff via SFTP as a backup the other day.

It's true! My aunt's dog's house sitter went to the states and they told me.
Also, you have to sign in your credit card in the presence of a priest or other local dignitary or it's not valid. Women still need to ask permission from their husbands or other male family member if unamarried before extending their credit limit.
The US is really archaic about card payments.

Whatever this concept is that Musk has, it feels like it already exists in a lot of the world.
Very much like the Cybertruck - not relevant worldwide. And also total bullshit.

There’s a chap who writes about UX who signed up for all of the UK banks to compare and contrast their digital offerings. He did a table of the international transfer costs, and as you might expect the “challenger” banks (and Revolut) were way cheaper than the likes of Nationwide, Santander, et al.

The cybertruck might have been a great product a year after it was announced. But now it's what. 8 years? There are already ev trucks on market. www.theverge.com/2023/10/26/23934216/x-twitter-bank-elon-musk-2024“When I say payments, I actually mean someone’s entire financial life,” Musk said, according to audio of the meeting obtained by The Verge. “If it involves money. It’ll be on our platform. Money or securities or whatever. This quote is messed up. Given his track record giving his company full control of someone's financial life is such a big no. And I'm sure he would love to pay his staff in company script.

Was it the announcement event when he tapped the window and it shattered? That definitely screamed ‘great product’.

Yes, the 'bulletproof' glass that smashed. It's just such a childish feature to show off about, but appreciate that it does have its merits in the US

Even before the glass smashing thing it was never going to be a success. From the very moment a picture was first released of it, people thought it was a joke. It looks like a joke, and nobody with half a brain would ever be caught dead driving one.

It’s a four wheeled blue check mark. Even before his nervous breakdown, the market for an expensive, hideously ugly, bulletproof, electric truck that can’t carry anything must have been vanishingly small but you now have to narrow that down again to just people who don’t think Musk is a cunt.
I would be genuinely surprised if I ever saw one out on the open road. They are going to take such a bath on it.

This is why I'd be fascinated to see some sort of tell-all oral history about it. It looks so obviously and transparently hideous that I genuinely wonder how it ever made it past a design document.

I suspect there were a lot of
‘Make this drawing I did. It’s cool’ ‘No it’s not’ ‘You’re fired. Bring in the next guy’
conversations. I can’t imagine how many serious people who actually knew what they were doing had to eat shit to get The Homer on the road.

For what it's worth, there are a few Cybertrucks out in the wild (US) at the moment ahead of the "delivery event" on 30th Nov, and the usual suspects (crypto bots) are going crazy for every new sighting or video of one turning a corner (four wheel steering).
Apparently they're known as "release candidates" 😂
Here's the plush interior of Musk in his at the F1 last weekend
