Also:
I expect just about every single automated account to stop working, as well as games that used it to save your data across multiple devices (best switch to Facebook or something else).

"We’ll be back with more details on what you can expect next week." Translation: Elon just told us to turn off free access. We're now desperately scrambling to come up with a plan before the turn-off date.

I still don't think it's going to kill Twitter. I'm not sure anything can, people are too addicted to it.

Oh it absolutely will kill it. Have you seen how hard newspapers try to get people to even make an account just to see stuff for free? Charging people for things they've expected for free rarely goes well.

Charging for api access always seemed a bit of a no-brainer to be fair, at least above a certain level. I guess it comes down to whether the makers of the apps are prepared to pay the fee. I think a lot of them charge end-users to use the apps.

Charging people for things they've expected for free rarely goes well. This is not saying that they'll charge users, though. This is saying that it will cost devs who produce things that tie into Twitter's API - for example, marketing tools that scrape the API for trend research and suchlike. That's only one example, but there are lots of others.

The one game I play that has Twitter as a binding option has already warned users (ironically, through a tweet) to bind their accounts with other methods, and I doubt it's the only one. Nostradamus that I am I had already done that about a month ago, but hey.

If you have an app that uses the api, does that mean none of the ads and suggested crap gets through?

Any bot accounts I follow like the Disco Elysium quotes have basically broken form to put out a tweet saying "Yeh this sucks, I'm not paying £100 a month for this".

Similar to the last 'fuck you, pay me' initiative, fun accounts like the above will say 'sod this' and bot farmers making thousands will consider it a small price to pay, so the end result can only be a net negative.

Presumably the bot farmers are actually going to be put off if they have to pay $100 per bot.
I was actually surprised by the amount of API access they gave away for free, not something I'd have done.

I think it probably ties in with Dorsey’s regret that Twitter should have been a protocol not an app

Yeah probably and it's not like we can re-run the experiment to work out if it would have failed to take off otherwise. But basically making it so that other people could produce better apps without ads and then charge for them always seemed like a fucking stupid business plan. Might just be me being a developer and liking reliable paid work coming to the fore.

Seems like he won that court case over tweeting that he was going to take Tesla private in 2018. Must be fun being on his legal team, ask whatever you want, and you’re sure not to run out of work any time soon.

So I guess I’m a bit disappointed in the lack of news or escalation lately to the Elon Musk shitshow.

Well, the paid API thing should be coming into effect in a couple of days assuming he doesn't backpedal. So that should be fun.

I mean, nothing has happened. People were tearing their hair out, stock prices plummeting, dogs and cats living together, then the story just petered out. A jury found him not guilty of a thing he obviously did, because rich. That’s it.

It's just normal imo. The average attention span for a big news story is 2 weeks, maybe 3 at a stretch. It petering out afterwards doesn't mean that things have stopped happening, just that people aren't paying it as much attention anymore.

Hopefully the near vacuum of attention on him these days is making him super upset. Imagine being a narcissistic cunt like him, being the top of the news for like a month solid, *everyone* talking about you, to getting orders of magnitude less attention than a fucking balloon
Did anyone know the Twitter Files are on part 12 by now?

Amplifying pro Russia BS accounts on Twitter without the slightest bit of fact-checking is his latest crap. But agreed, good he has faded to obscurity somewhat. I wonder if the recent disposition got him to rein it in a bit.
