It would take a couple decades sure, but see many cities in northern Europe that have done it. Amsterdam is super bicycle focused now, now even more than when I lived there over 24 years ago. And it was more bicycle centric then than 20 years before that.

Yeah. We don't actually need fast travel between big cities but reasonably paced travel between towns and their local municipalities. I couldn't give a fuck about getting to London from Manchester in 90 minutes as it's a journey I rarely make. But if my work is, as the crow flies, 12 miles away but it's a choice of - 90 minutes with train and a bus - 45 in a car Which am I gonna choose? Motorbike

Good enough cycle paths that it's 45 minutes on a bike.

Can't take a motorbike on cycle lanes, silly. Not for too long, anyway. Maybe 4 hours, based on the current response time.

I know they are doing tests of self-driving (mini) busses in rural parts of Japan, mainly because the rural population is very elderly and they can't get around easily or drive very safely.
They were also planning to use similar self-driving minibusses at the Tokyo Olympics, but I don't know if that ever happened.
Plus Toyota is working on a concept city that sounds like it'll have self-driving transport.
Iirc car sales have been dropping among young people, who can't afford them or prefer to live in cities and get everything delivered (which will be by drone at some point) or use Ubers.
So I think it'll come in from several angles. Public transport will move to self-driving. More people will use ubers and said public transport, and not own cars. Car companies will switch to either providing subscription membership services or selling mainly to taxi/uber companies. Dogs and cats living together.
Will depend a lot on the geography though. Can't see rural middle america giving up their trucks anytime soon. I'm sure the NTA will spring up to defend their 2nd amendment right to bear trucks. (see video in previous post)
BTW, how is car-sharing where you guys live? There are car sharing points everywhere here now, at least in the big cities. I think there are 4 places within 300m of my apartment where I could pick up a car if I was a member. I'd guess the overall membership isn't that high relative to the total population, but they seem like they'd work quite well for people who just want to use a car a couple of times a month.

I use one. Mostly ok. Has annoyed me a few times recently: Used it on Christmas Day. Booking email claimed it had a full tank, but only had 20 miles :/ Club rules say you should leave it with at least a quarter, and there’s a fuel card. Needed it last Friday for an appointment but couldn’t enter the car. Had to use a taxi and when I reported it, they told me the car was flat. Could have been a bit more proactive!

Car sharing sucks if you have children that need car seats.

Car sharing sucks if you have children that need car seats. Oh yeah, i forgot the UK requires child seats up to age 18 or something weird. That would be inconvenient with car sharing.

They don't but rear facing car seats are by far the safest way to transport kids. Ours cost like £450... And they take up a lot of space. The injury kids otherwise risk of facing forward is decapitation...!

I'm not one to pay too much attention to these sort of things but wow this Twitter update sucks. I just want a chronological list of tweets from accounts I follow, not seeing what every Tom, Dick and Harry has liked. Even when you go to the Following tab and want it to refresh with something new, it doesn't work. You gotta go back to the new default, refresh that, THEN you can switch and view. But you gotta do that every time? Plus the search sucks now? I'm taking Elon wholly responsible for this.

I honestly can’t believe everyone didn’t just delete their account the minute he walked in with the sink.
I feel like Yontek in The Witcher 3.

So he's not paying rent anywhere then. They have servers at some of these properties, right? So if they get evicted the servers will get shut off...

But he's a business/tech/coding/science genius!
Why won't people just understand his struggle?

His first round of debt repayment is due this week too. Maybe they’ll scrounge up another Twitter Files straw grasp to try to ignore it.

Elon inviting right wing grifters to Twitter HQ to find out why their tweets aren't getting enough likes has to be one of the most pathetic things yet.

Twitter Circles, the feature that you could post Tweets where only people you wanted to see them could, have broken and are all public. I never really saw much point in them but I can imagine it could be a bit awkward for people who used them to slag people off.

Testing in production, what could possibly go wrong?
Tbh, I thought this was going to be the spate of steering wheels falling off moving Teslas.

All this because some right wing tinfoil brains somehow convinced themselves that they got shadowbanned and the only way to see their tweets is to make their profiles private

A few months later, Twitter seems to be finally breaking down. For the last few days, almost nothing has been working as it should. Replies become invisible, it takes forever to update the timeline, etc.
It must be bursting at the edges now.
