Can't we just have teleporters? “I teleported home last night with Ron and Sid and Meg Ron stole Meggy's heart away and I got Sidney's leg.” ― Douglas Adams

I think there aren't any laws yet for automated driving, even on trains we want a human pushing down on the dead-man pedal. The issue is with the inherent bias of whoever is doing the automating. Facial recognition already fails black people as its generally white people doing the programming and tuning. Obviously you dont want a two ton car failing to recognise a black guy crossing the road.

You would think the future of cars is going to be like irobot. A fleet of self driving pods in perpetual motion, picking you up from home, dropping you at the shops, picking the next person up from the shops, dropping them at home, all driving efficiently and packed into our limited road space. Car ownership and costs, gone. I would love that, but that's the vision that Matt Letisier and Right Said Fred amongst others rail against as not owning things is terrible.

I read a stat years ago that said the average car is parked for 95% of its life. We could do so much more with much less if we automated them and had them running 24/7.

I just had our second car MOTd and it's done 800 miles since the last one, so probably true.
(300 miles each of the two years before that, too)

Well that's the good thing about Tesla's system, it uses the cars that are already out there to gather real life data, instead of training on a set of data that might have an inherent bias.

Yeah. We don't actually need fast travel between big cities but reasonably paced travel between towns and their local municipalities.
I couldn't give a fuck about getting to London from Manchester in 90 minutes as it's a journey I rarely make.
But if my work is, as the crow flies, 12 miles away but it's a choice of
- 90 minutes with train and a bus - 45 in a car
Which am I gonna choose?

We need less car centric cities.. just need to walk and cycle.
We just upgraded to a electric cargo bike. Man is it awesome. The 16mph limit I think should be 20mph to match most residential streets, but then I am a fast cycler. 16mph is probably more than fast enough for most.
The kids love it and I don't have to sit in traffic. Its faster for shorter and longer trips within London.

(300 miles each of the two years before that, too) Think about the journeys done in it and how much it cost to buy and keep on the road. And then work out if you could do without and get a cab. We only have one car, which my wife moans about, but we'd use it every other week to go to the shops/gym. Bus/cab is far cheaper and not hugely more inconvenient for me.

We absolutely could go down to one car but I am pretty much keeping mine as a luxury item because I just enjoy driving it. It is a total waste of money but... car goes vroom.
Neat segue: with an eye on getting rid of both cars and getting an EV, I did have a look at a Tesla the other day as they have slashed the prices of most models. They took 7k off a model Y which did pique my interest despite it being a tacit elon endorsement but, man, they are ugly. They look so old and so many companies have overtaken them, I really dont know why you would pick one over a Kia or Hyundai (other than the charging network).
Its no wonder their prices are crashing.

It was bought when we were both commuting, so we needed it then. We mostly use it go shopping now, because mine is too big for city car parks and the like. It's dirt cheap to insure and run, so I'm not uncomfortable with the financial side of it. It's worth the money to not have to get a 90 minute bus ride each way to town.

As much as I like the idea of a carless society where public (possibly automated) transport is cheap and easy, in real world terms what’s proposed is “overhaul the infrastructure of every city in the world and tell some of the most powerful and influential companies that they’re done”

I don’t think anyone will say ‘right, we are doing this now’ but it will be more of a natural evolution. As soon as we master a completely self driving car, that sense of ownership with look, feel, responsiveness and all that is gone, the need to have it sat on your drive is gone and so on.
Nobody decided the time of the horse was done, a better option came along.

You're forgetting the Great Horse Strike of 1912.
Swathes of horses just kicked off their shoes and picketed outside stables.

I agree that better options will come along eventually, but probably not our lifetimes. Plus there was no big horse conglomerate actively getting governments to build infrastructure around hoofs and blocking anyone from going horseless.
Tesla, ironically, is the best example here. Musk and his hyperloop bollocks is only there to stop high speed rail (arguably the best way for long distance/interstate travel) from getting traction.

We all need to be shrunk down like Ant Man. Loads of us could fit on a greyhound's back then, and we'd be at work in no time.
We'd all vote on what direction we needed to go, and whoever wins gets to team up and pull the greyhound's reigns in the desired direction.
The losers might not get to work on time, but that's their problem. The real winners would be riding their own luxury hamsters.

Why isn't Elon on this??
