A podcast he co-hosts with Lucy James and Jake Baldino, who also don't strike me as the Gamergate types.

Not sure where that rep came from. He's always come across as pretty levelheaded to me.

I’d just assume it’s a fairly safe assumption with most of these gaming YouTubers.

My mistake, it's his *brother* who was apparently involved in the GamerGate stuff directly? SkillUp just appears/appeared in his content, which is still a bit sus to me in the same way that anyone involved with Asmongold is a bit sus to me.

Wow what a very strange mix of reviews.
An endless morass of banality from Skill up and best bioware game ever from EG.

Yeah skill up is fine. I often disagree with his reviews but he is one of the most open and honest reviewers out there.

My mistake, it's his *brother* who was the chud and was heavily involved in the GamerGate stuff directly. SkillUp just appears/appeared in his content, which is still a bit sus to me in the same way that anyone involved with Asmongold is a bit sus to me. I mean I sorta get that what with family and all and I assumed something must have happened when he sought to move away from his brother's stuff over time because again family dynamics. I don't think that's particularly suss.

Yeah, tbh I should probably have checked more closely, I know a couple of discords I frequent banned his content on the grounds of a gamergate association and didn't look into it much closer.

A good rule of thumb I find is that any YouTube video labelled “My brutally honest review” goes straight in the bin. Instant bellend alert.

Is his brother the Laymen Gaming guy?

What if it's a brutally dishonest review?

Is his brother the Laymen Gaming guy? Yes. Over time I gradually noticed that SkillUp looked more and more embarrassed to be there and he had the look of doing something because his mum told him to support his younger brother.

Thanks, chaps.
That's less surprising to me, based on my (very limited) experience of Laymen Gaming... and yeah, SkillUp cut professional ties with him a while back, from what I know.

I can't find anything about the other brother, I know Ralph thought laymen gaming was a bit clickbaity and unprofessional and tbh he was being held back. Sure there was another brother but he didn't appear much on the channel

So who's planning to pick this up at launch?
I was, and still might, but I may wait for it to come down in price first - plenty of other games I could get for the £58 Veilguard would cost this week, after all.

I will buy but not at launch, I have metaphor, silent hill and cod on the go at the moment and am enjoying them all. When I get metaphor off the list I will grab it.

I'll have it tomorrow but I'm not sure if I'll start it, or play it at all judging from the previous games. I think I played a handful of hours of 2, and less than an hour of Inquisition (I kept thinking I'd play that before Veilguard but here we are).
I guess I should check out some reviews, but I was thinking about starting either Epic Mickey or Luigi's Mansion 3 (because Halloween).

The skill up review is definitely a bit extreme, even for him, but he tends towards strong opinions.
Mortismal is pretty positive. He even likes most of the companions and there is very little criticism of the writing, but he is rarely critical of story and such.

The Skill Up review is what I was expecting and it's hard to argue with him on the character design and animation. Looks appalling in those regards and that was bothering me in the previews. Pretty savage review all round.
Weird one to get such extremes, think I'll wait to hear what you early adopters think.

I do find writing in games pretty subjective anyway, to be honest. I thought a lot of ME2's writing was as poor as ME3's (though not its weakest parts). And there's games which are praised for their writing which I just don't agree with at all - The Outer Worlds for example has like, one well written character and the rest is just messy and unfinished but gets a pass for being from Obsidian. While Life is Strange I think I managed about 30 minutes of before uninstalling and never playing again due to the writing.
