Randomly fired Metro Exodus back up yesterday. Picked up my save from a year or two ago, probably only about 25% in but got a real hankering for single player FPS experiences at the moment. Even nearly pulled the trigger on that Avatar game.
God I'd love to be playing Half Life 3 instead.

Returnal... It's a love-hate game for me. When you're dodging everything it makes you feel king, when you're getting killed by enemies that pop up next to you and sword swipe you after 20 mins of resource gathering, it's infuriating.
The design is equally hot and cold. The visual language of the bullet hell is great. There's a real geometric depth to it all which makes dodging in 3D work well. Then you get to the platform rooms it loves to throw at you and suddenly it becomes a painful exercise in slowly hopping between stepping stones making sure you don't overcook a jump with the slightly slippery controls.
Other grievances: why the fk are so many items coloured purple and why have they stuck Obolites inside the eggs around the fourth biome. So much time is assessing whether to pick up a resource, which is completely counter to the fast paced nature of the combat and a real flaw in a roguelike where you want to know instantly whether you're going to choose a resource for this particular run. Likewise the consumables require too much reading to understand and the benefits aren't really worth the effort. Also think they could've done a better job with the parasites and other upgrades. They are so random they don't really lend themselves to interesting combinations within a single run.
That's a lot of whining, but the core game is very good. Reminds me a lot of Doom16 and Eternal. Just a few too many irritations. Lest I mention the PC port is god-awful.

Been playing Ori and the Blind Forest on Switch as a way to get my daily “play a game on PC” Xbox rewards points. Still one of my top 3 Metroid clones out there, up with Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Guacamelee.

The first two are probably my favourite single player FPS games of all time.

In an effort to not spend any money on new games right now, I have resurrected the following from my back catalogue of previous purchases that I never really started properly;
Nioh 2 Nier Automa Dishonoured: Death of the Outsider Inside Resi 7
Also plugging away at BG3, currently Act 2.
Got my eye on DD2 thou…

The kind of experience I'm after is very much in the BioShock/Half Life 2/Prey vein... Metro Exodus and STALKER on my Xbox are semi scratching the itch but no exactly what I'm craving. Semi considering a one month Ubisoft+ sub to have a go on Avatar without dropping 60 quid on it. Edit - done Titanfall 2 campaign, it's brilliant.

Isn’t Atomic Heart in that vein? I ask, having never downloading it despite it being on GamePass because I never have enough space for it.

God I'd love to be playing Half Life 3 instead. Wouldn't we all?!?
I'm hearing good things about Trepang2 and apparently there's a demo on steam - haven't tried it myself though.

I kinda wish Sony would throw the weight of their first party studios behind a decent story driven FPS rather than being seemingly exclusively third person shooters/action games. Killzone is long deceased and even that wasn't really story driven as such. Would love to see what Naughty Dog could produce with a Half Life/BioShock esque design brief.

I wish WB would just give Monolith carte blanche to make another quirky FPS of theirs. But nope, Wonder Woman GaaS.

Oh shit I'm in trouble. I was obsessed with Paragon back in the day and put over 200 hours in on the game, sadly Epic shut it down on 2018 I think. Tonight I saw an advert on Instagram for something looking extremely similar and turns out there is a new version (by other developers with Epic's blessing) called Predecessor. Fuck me, I've only played a few games, but it's taking me right back, loved this game and enjoying this 'remake' so far. www.predecessorgame.com/

Jedi Survivor was cheap in a steam sale. Holy fuck is it still poorly optimised on PC, I remember the Digital Foundry from last year but had assumed they'd patched it a bit since.
The main HUB area is just diabolical, not for low FPS but for really choppy spikey FPS. Which does actually fuck me off. Most of the actual levels are fine and playable though.

Sorry to hear that.
I remember how the Game Star reviewer was despairing about the situation with PC ports back when Jedi Survivor had just come out. Even with a 4090 and everything you might wish for in terms of hardware.

It's... fine. I'm surprised it won lots of awards. It feels a little Ubisoft tick list adjacent.

Rage 2 may be too open world for you (?), but the combat is definitely fun.
Also, as you are mentioning Half Life 2... have you actually played Black Mesa, the remake/reimagining of Half Life?

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is also a pretty decent shooter, if you haven't tried it yet.

Max payne 3 on pc. Absolutely amazing game and I’m loving every minute. I played it on 360 years ago and loved it but thought the aiming was off on controller but it’s sublime playing it using a mouse. Such great atmosphere, soundtrack, characters, set pieces. Pretty much the perfect action game. Still holds up well on pc as well considering it’s 11 years old.

I really liked Singularity. It's worth a punt. Still keep meaning to get around to trying TimeShift. TimeShift was a rare case of having a censored copy and no uncut patch existing. It has never proven to be a problem before and it probably won't make that much of a difference, but I'd still like to give it another try with an uncensored version. The time mechanics were definitely interesting and some of the guns as well, but half of the weapon effects missing was pretty noticeable.

Is that the German censoring where people bleed balloons and flowers and stuff?

Haha, I remember the German version of Soldier of Fortune 2, where everyone was turned into a robot.

Sounds like the far superior version. Everything is better with robots.

Is that the German censoring where people bleed balloons and flowers and stuff? Nah, in this case it was really just a lot of stuff missing. I think there were people with animations that seemed to suggest that they were burning, but there were no visuals for it. No that interesting.
Half Life however... somehow they ended up replacing all of the soldiers with robots with the voicework to go along with it, scientists sat down shaking their heads when killed, no gibs (enemies just fade), body parts from barnacles replaced with gears and such. A lot of effort for pretty questionable results.
