I'm still on FF7 Rebirth, the jump up in quality from Remake to this is incredible. Now 70 hours in and have arrived in cosmo canyon. I know it's only March but can see this easily making my GOTY list. Im very much interested in that game’s soundtrack. I want to hear the new Cosmo Canyon themes.

Is anyone else playing Unicorn Overlord? Game is fucking amazing, easily one of the best games I've played in a long time. Vanillaware have delivered an all time classic imo, don't skip it if you're even remotely interested in strategy games Preordered, but it got delayed so much that I'll be playing it after Rise of the Ronin is released... Probably my fault for going for the special (physical) edition, sucker that I am for extra tat /father's son

It's been fantastic so far, not sure if it's a remix of an old tune or something new but there's a piece as you climb up Mt. Corel that I just stood there and listened to it loop for a good 5-10 minutes.

Managed to squeeze few more hours into fc5.
Fun. But I'm doing only main missions.
So after liberating the tiny island I went up north to do main mission. Then immediately had to go accross whole map to county jail. And then again west to the town rescue. That's a lot of travel.
I think people normally explore the area first doing side missions first before jumping into another area? Seems like i drove past lots of content.

New Star GP
A retro inspired F1 game. Visuals similar to that of Virtua Racing.
But don't let the visuals mislead you, this game has a tonne of depth. Its very much an arcade racer, but with sim elements. Within the 6 laps of each race, they managed to pack in the following:
Changeable weather Pit stops Tyre management. Hard, soft and wet tyres Fuel management Damage and collisions
All of the above has an affect on your car. You choose your strategy going into the race, will you do a 2 stop or try a 1 stop with more fuel and worse performing tyres.
It plays and handles amazingly well. It feels similar to the F1 games on the PS1. How they managed to pack so much in I have no idea.
There's a demo on the xbox, not sure about the other platforms. I eventually bought it for the Steam Deck and I can hook it up to my TV and push 3k @ 60fps without it breaking a sweat.
Everyone should check this one out.

I can't work out how I feel about the New Star GP visuals. On the one hand it looks like loads of fun, and maybe they'd encourage me to just play if for fun, but on the other hand I feel like if I'm gonna play an F1 game then I want to *feel* like I'm F1 racing, so I'd want more realistic visuals.
Similarly, I can't decide if 2 stops within a 6 lap race is a great idea or a terrible one.
------
Skyrim.
I am enjoying this a lot. It has a very Morrowindian vibe.
I haven't played the Fallout games or Oblivion, but the Bethesda games I've played all have a kinda unique vibe, at least for RPGs. They tend to feel very lonely, as you spend a lot of your time alone, walking through the wilderness. The music enhances this vibe as it's usually some kind of melancholy classical music.
The world is beautiful, even if slightly less weird and wonderful than Morrowind. Coming across something or someone always feels exciting as it interrupts the melancholy wandering. Though most of the things you come across do tend to be combat encounters (so far at least).
I can see the combat focus and dungeons becoming a bit samey after a while, but so far I'm liking that the dungeons feel much more designed than in previous games, and there are some nice touches like the limited physics for things like traps and fire.
I can see myself falling very much into the stealth-archer playstyle, as it's very hard to resist sneaking and then shooting someone in the head with an arrow.
I haven't spent that much time in big towns yet, which is where there are probably more people to chat with and things might feel a little less lonely. I wonder if picking up a companion with change the vibe?
It's very different from most party-based RPGs where you always feel part of a big group with banter, etc..
(Special Edition with a only few basic mods to make NPCs a bit more varied, and allow blocking with off-hand weapons )

Somehow, they made pitting in a 6 lap race just feel right. I would of been skeptical at first as well. Ultimately its an arcade game with F1 feels, with none of the overly complicated sim elements of the modern F1 games.
You also soon forget the visuals due to how well it plays. You will be concentrating on racing lines and breaking distances to try to take the next corner perfectly.
I bought Hotshot Racing when that came out and was super disappointed due to it playing like bumper cars, with some of the most aggressive rubber banding of any racer I have played. Luckily, New Star GP suffers none of this and it all comes down to player skill.

Nearing the end of: Resistance Retribution on ps5. Maybe 4 more missions to go, this was the only mainline Resistance I never played (I love R3) and fuck me it is a ball ache, the enemies take so much damage. The only reason I am still playing is due to hate quitting games and more important than even that is the fact I can save anytime I want, I do like this feature sony added when playing previous gen games.
Outerworlds complete ed One main mission to go but I have jumped into the dlc. The game is ok, does nothing wrong but it is very average.
Brotato Only about 5 "spuds" to complete game and get 100% achievements. I have used this for my daily game past quest (it has loads of cheveo's), but had a lot of fun with it, I prefer it over VS

Paper Mario: Origami King
I've ignored quite a lot of Switch stuff over the last few years because my son plays them first and becomes the world's worst backseat gamer. There's no enjoyment of discovery left for me! Haven't even played more than an hour of the new Zelda because of that.
Anyway, he's distracted by his Xbox these days so I've managed to go back to this one and it's wonderful! The humour hits as well as it did in the older games (even though I'm older and grumpier) and the adventure has been really fun so far. Boss battles are a bit of a head scratcher, but I think I've got them sussed now.

I don't remember anything specific, but I do remember Origami King got a few proper laughs out of me, which is rare for a game.

Absolutely loving the new Prince of Persia now I'm more into it. Doesn't seem to be as many secrets in each area as a lot of Metroidvania's but the side quests help find some decent loot.
Amazed that a Ubisoft title has some actual care put into it outside of building the map.

I tried the campaign for SunAge - Battle for Elysium, the steam remaster of an old RTS. It's quite pretty aesthetically speaking and has a decent soundtrack, but as per usual the campaign design and shortcomings of the controls are in the way, so I'm just going to give Skirmish mode a try. There is no difficulty-slider though, so I'm just getting my ass handed to me so far. Need to give it another try later.
Other than that I only played one session of Tainted Grail - Conquest so far and I'm already quite liking it, so that will probably become the one I'll focus on for now. It's a "story-driven hybrid between a deck-building Roguelike and an RPG game". It's basically a seemingly randomized open world around the player's hub with some people (and their associated functions) out there that can be recruited for the hub. There are also various well-written side-quests to be found. So far I only have the Wyrdhunter available from among the nine character classes, but it seems more are relatively easily unlocked, so I'm looking forward to trying some of those.

Thought I'd resume Pacific Drive, but it's not very welcoming. A lot of systems, clunky controls, and the need to do a large chunk of a mission before any checkpoints mean it's probably a Sunday afternoon kind of game.

richyroo Still enjoying New Star GP? Just seen a review for it and it’s giving me big F1 97 vibes. All the way down to the camera options. This has gone on the “not so long into the future” wish list. It looks amazing.

Yeah I haven't played it the last couple of days. Not because I'm not enjoying it, I just have so much backlog to get through I feel slightly overwhelmed by it all. I plan to get back into it thought because it really is an great game. The fact I have it on the Steam Deck means its easy to just pick up and play for 5 mins or 5 hours.
F1 97 was on the PS1 right? That was the first F1 game I ever played and I absolutely loved it. The handling model of New Star GP feels very similar (from what I can remember). It has that perfect balance of sitting somewhere between arcade and sim. Races demand your full attention as you try to take the best racing lines and brake at the optimum distance. While I love the polygonal graphics, you soon forget your playing an indie game as you concentrate to put in the best laps you can.
Its definitely worth a buy in my opinion. There's a reason its getting high user reviews on the Xbox/PS/Steam stores.
The only downside is that it doesn't have online multiplayer if thats your jam. Not a deal breaker for me, but would of been nice nonetheless.

The online doesn’t bother me either. I have fond memories of doing full race weekends on F1 97, but keeping the lap count down so it didn’t take months for me to finish a season. This looks like exactly the same thing. I don’t mind a sim racer, but I prefer something a little lighter than a full sim experience.

dangerousdave The other downside is that it doesn't have qualifying. You start every race in last place (10th position). But the tracks are not full size tracks, so it feels right to only have a maximum of 10 cars on track. Outside of the career mode, there is a championship mode. You can set the number of laps to as many as you like, along with weather, tyre wear etc etc. The trouble with this mode (in my very limited experience with it), is that the fuel and damage/tyre wear does not scale with the number of laps you choose. So if you are doing a 70 lap race, then you will likely have to pit 25-35 times. You can of course just turn off the tyre wear and fuel consumption, but its a bit of an oversight i think nonetheless.
I literally only played 10 mins of the championship mode, so I may be missing something. I have spent most of my time in career mode thus far.

It does have split screen though.
Not many switch reviews around, but one I read mentioned the performance being a bit choppy at times. Hopefully that doesn't get even worse in splitscreen mode.

As expected Tainted Grail - Conquest isn't stingy with the character class unlocks. Just finished a successful run with the Summoner and now already have five of the nine classes available. So far I haven't really found my favourite - even though being able to play cards for reduced costs was definitely fun on the Summoner -, so I'll definitely try a new class tomorrow.

Slightly further along in Sifu. The controller map and skill tree and combo list make it look like there should be a lot of skill in this but it feels like outside of boss fights button mashing and spamming dodge is as good as anything. Fun time though, only downsides are the controller speaker and not having a difficultly setting so low that you can really indulge in a kung fu power fantasy of flawlessly whipping everyone’s asses in style.

I bloody love Sifu. Got the plat from it Focus on the permanent unlock of skills. Also learn to defend and counter and use leg sweep as you can run into a group and leg sweep the lot of them to the ground sometimes.
At the moment I'm playing Sonic Mania. Takes me back to being a kid in the 90s. Still remember playing Sonic 2 on the mega drive, went to school and told my mum I'd leave the TV off but had paused the console so don't unplug it as it doesn't save. What did she do? Yep unplugged it for hoovering.

I started Deathloop... it's leaving me cold? Admittedly only played it for hour or two, but it's very familiar? Feel like I've done the whole creeping round, jumping across rooftops, reading notes, etc. etc. thing many times before.
I think I was expecting a sense of urgency for the game for some reason. Does it become more interesting than just Dishonoured 3?

The worst thing about playing Rise of the Ronin and Dragon’s Dogma 2 simultaneously is remembering the controller layouts. One uses L1 for block while the other uses R1. One uses triangle for strong attack while the other uses it for parry.
Why don’t you both stick to what your studio’s previous games used??! 😬

Nier Automata
Going from Horizon Zero Dawn's truly magnificent post-apocalyptic world to Nier Automata's was probably not the best idea for me, and the latter could easily pass as a PS3 game remade for the PS4 (to be fair very much like the original Nier looked like a PS2 game on the PS3); however the good art direction makes Automata's relatively small world still interesting to explore. The enemies are all so basic looking variations of round headed tubby mechs (again an unfortunate comparison to HZD's miriad monstrousities) but the combat is good as typical for Platinum. I've beaten route A and am currently going through route B which I gather is a mildly tedious mostly retread until I get to the good stuff later. Honestly, the Nier games don't half make you work for the fun. Currently the original Nier beats this one in my opinion, it had a mournful dark magic that this game doesn't quite have to the same degree, but that opinion may change once I have seen all endings.
Steep
I love a bit of skiing and this scratches the itch nicely. Gets repetitive if played exclusively and I can't stand all the sodding surfer dude/dudette banter it throws at you, but at least I can hurl my surfer dude off a cliff and watch him crunch his way to the bottom Homer Simpson style... How's that for 'shredding a sick line' you bellend!!
Shadow Tower
Not getting round to this one much and I am still only in the third world (Fire), but it will get finished eventually as it is very compelling.
