As a recruiter, yes but….. I’ve recently taken on a few overqualified people older than me who were very aware I would think this and explained they wanted to take a step back and get back to the more hands on, operational side of things and that did go a long way to putting those concerns aside. Time will tell if they are being straight but if you’re finding it an obstacle, you could try hitting it head on even if your reason is bullshit. This is *exactly* what I said when I was going for a lower level job / had more experience. Some people accept it, and some don't. It's always easier if you have an opportunity to mention it. A lot of places simply don't give you the chance, but some do

I've decided it's not going to really work here in the UK. I'm literally applying for roles that I already do abroad that ask for the same experience and qualifications. I've asked for feedback and they all say they don't give it due to number of applicants. So is it that they barely look at the CV's they get because none of them ask you to fill in application forms it's just send in CV's? I don't think it's a coincidence to get two replies within a minute of each other at 10am on the first day of half term, it almost comes across that they look at the first handful of applications, take them and say no to everyone else even if they meet what they're looking for. Regardless I gave it a try, it didn't really work out, I have a recruiter here and they're offering me school stuff so I've just fired off a ton of applications today exclusively to positions abroad.

What are you writing on the covering letter?

Post by Jambowayoh on Oct 28, 2024 12:37:32 GMT
Most if not all are not asking for a covering letter, when they do I explicitly target and reference the organisation and the skills that they are looking for and how mine relate to them bla bla. I've done this long enough where I know it isn't my CV or covering letter, I've gotten enough interviews off them and I always tweak it. There are things I know I can control and things I can't and this is just one of them. Like I said I tried here and it just wasn't meant to be.
I also am aware that I've primarily filled this thread with pure moaning and whatnot going in a complete circle of getting offer for something I like then something bad happening so I'm going to bug out.

I just take knock backs with a pinch of salt. Unfortunately the job market, is a lot like online dating. We're cattle in a mass meat market. No point comparing yourselves to others. You apply enough times and finally something sticks.

Nah it's all good Jambo. I'm impressed at your perseverance. It sounds like you're doing all the right things, but not getting the luck.
I agree with zissou's assessment, as depressing as it is. Had similar experience of firing things in and getting a mix of ghosting and rejections. Eventually found a new job through connections I've built over the years, but it's a bit sideways in order to upskill more. Guess to extend the dating analogy, I found someone the old fashioned way outside of all the apps.

Had a nice win at work today, finally got rid of this task - back to the arsehat who pushed onto me when I started. He didn't want to improve the process or improve the content (as its want I did in my last job) Hopefully an end to his emails and seeing his smallface.gif face in his work icon picture

The restructure has restarted. Meeting with DCE this afternoon as I am, again, an 'affected person'.
I don't know why current leadership are allowed to propose a new structure when they're breaking up the organization anyway? Current CE is gone by December, why the fuck are they being allowed to do this?

Four positions down to three. Seems like they're treating our team separately this time, which is a good sign. Full announcement at noon.

I've been a bit on-and-off the forum but I know the job hunt has been an arse for you. I'd tell you to move here, but I don't know if you could get a visa. NZ definitely needs ESL teachers.

Apparently I’m not allowed to back fill the role I was in because there’s not enough work showing on the system, so currently I’m doing two jobs.
That is purely because the previous boss never sorted that out (+wasn’t doing what he was supposed to be doing) and our sales people don’t bother putting it on there until the last minute (we focus on doing bids).
Should’ve been easy, now I’ve got to sort out the company process in my first week on the job.

I wouldn't give them that much credit. They just look at a number, say it's wrong then still base things off it because the system says so.
Anyway, I can see how much the team gets paid now. Some people will be getting given a lot more work than they have been.

Think my workplace is (not so) subtly working to derecognise the unions. Higher grade (manager level upwards) employees will no longer be able represented by the official unions, instead there will be an employee forum. People nominating themselves for the forum explicitly can't be members of the unions.
Lower grades (myself included) are still represented by the unions, but I don't really have much faith in the unions as they're proving themselves a bit toothless. There is an unrecognised union but I dislike how they deliver their communications, their tone feels a bit Rik-from-the-Young-Ones.

I'm still getting used to how laid back my new place is. Today for instance, there's a guy near me with 2 monitors. He's working on one, whilst the snooker is on the other. And that's all fine.

Oy vey.
I had the temerity to have a couple of weeks off work last month, which fell across our monthly reporting period, that I usually do on my own.
Despite having taken everyone else through it numerous times and documented everything to the nth degree, I'm doing this month's and finding out that all of last month's are wrong. So I'm going to have to go back and redo them all, otherwise all the trends and analysis will be fucked.
Yay.

Had to walk back from work because some dickhead locked their bike to mine in the basement carpark. Thanks for that.

I hope you gobbed on the handlebars?

I was tempted to lock both his and my bike to the Sheffield stand but thought better of that.
Did tell the security desk but basically because it's not my lock they were reluctant to cut through it. I'll go back in tomorrow on my lunch break, if it's still there I'll ask them to make a tannoy announcement. If that doesn't work I'll gob on the handlebars.

Is there a risk of it being stolen?

I'd say it's low risk, as it's in the basement of our office, and you need a pass to enter and exit.
It's probably at less of a theft risk than it is back home where it's locked in my front "garden" (not sure what you'd call that 4 foot wide strip of land between the house and the pavement) to a gate that could probably be kicked apart.

Can't even leave a bike in a back garden around here, the little bastards will have it away. They would remove your gate and take it with them 😂
