I'm near the end of the main story but keep getting sidetracked.
The main story definitely picks up about midway and then takes a dark turn.

Do you have to just keep collecting powers to get the story to continue or do I have to go off with bravestar and his daughter and progress that bit?
I just keep arbitrarily scanning planets but not doing anything of substance. Maybe I need to progress something

No. The artifacts are what progress the story.

I started to pull som threads and get involved with some quests and have progressed alsorts. One of them was me joining Sam on Akila and for the next trinket and then things went wrong when we exited the mine.
I don't normally go for the persuasion perks but I have in this and I'm enjoying talking my way into/out of stuff. I'm also using the precognition power and it's like I'm inside their minds.
So back the sitch outside the mine, I tabbed out of the convo so I could pop the precog and get in her thoughts but she took that as me just saying ,"go fuck yourself" and it all resulted in a gunfight with a load of Ashta creatures getting involved.

The Ryujin questline in Neon is well worth doing for one of the rewards if you enjoy persuasion. I piled max points into that and wore an outfit that increased persuasion most of the time, which kind of trivialises it. You can just pick the red option most of the time and rarely fail.
Kind of annoyed that lockpicking skills don't have skills that make it similarly quick to get through them. I just stopped opening locks towards the end, as the rewards are often rubbish for the time needed to get through the higher tier locks.

You can get a skill that banks some auto alignment for picks but it's only for 5 picks. And doing a Master lock to be rewarded by 2000 credits is always disappointing, especially when you have over 500,000 credits by that point.

Yeah locks do become a bit laborious and it's annoying how quite often the stuff behind a master lock is no better than a weaker one. Why is everyone in Starfield so broke that they keep a few hundred credits in a master locked safe?
One of my more idiotic moments was during a mission involving a prison and I wasted about 10 lock picks and way too much time unlocking cell doors for a range of very minor rewards. Was obsession more than enjoyment, a fear of missing something great which means I must check everything. I then carried on to the next section and found a master control switch that could have just opened all of them in one go.
Lost quite a bit of enthusiasm for the lock picking mini game in that moment...

I'm the same. Did a main mission with lots of master difficulty locks and just couldn't be arsed - as mentioned, when you have 500k credits in your account and weaponery that works I am not sure there is much incentive bar the OCD and FOMO.
It was that mission where stuff happend which I didn't expect - thought this seemingly straightforward mission was just that. Oh I was wrong. Anyway it's been the highlight of the main missions so far.

After not starting the UC Vanguard missions for fear of them being too bland the very first mission was one of the best I'd done.
Clearly an homage to [spoilers]Aliens[/spoilers]. It actually managed to generate some atmosphere. It's still not as good as it could have been with all the cookie cutter environments/buildings, but a lot better than other missions in any case.
Also, guess this is a given, but the difficulty scales along with your rank I assume? Otherwise that mission would have been properly terrifying.

I still do them, but it is becoming more of a pita. I do like looting shit though, even if most of it is rubbish.
I don't know what it says about me. Latent kleptomaniac tendencies if consequence-free in a virtual environ possibly?

I quite like the lockpicking. I find that using the autopick to show the first key usually speeds things up enough to make it a lot less laborious. At master level you can spend a pick to remove all the unused keys, but as I never have enough picks I can't say I've used that option much.

I have 100+ picks. Visit merchants and buy them up when selling shit. Nick loads in the bases too.
Have you done the ryujin quest line? They're quite generous with them.

I don't think I'm even halfway through the main story by my estimation of what other people have said, but I'm hoping that dark turn is "Blood sacrifice of Matteo"

I've circled back around to the UC guy I met ages ago and decided to join the corps, to become a citizen :-P
I'm only level 22 or 3 but I reckon if I'd taken that mission back then it would've been a slightly different feeling. As it stands I have a legendaey extended exploding Grendel that torches everything with a high chance of exploding rounds being fired and a massive mag size. Any tense moments were swiftly dismissed with searing hot lead.
That aside, politics in the future seem a bit easily swayed into decisions by Joe public.
I don't think I'm far of getting inside Andreja's business, she's just confessed a big secret to me. Do you get follower specific perks like in FO?

I almost uninstalled this, needed to make space for the Forza preload, man, I haven’t fell this hard from a “AAA” game in years, just have no interest in booting it up again. It’s got a patch or two and then it’s gaming toast.

Think I had just collected two artifacts from different mines, which were identical to all the other mines. Time to move on for me I think. Life is too short.

Just levelling up is so slow. I’m level 20, pissing around Neon (finally mostly done), and getting 100 exp from running all the way back across the city, then again, etc etc just feels like a chore. And I want a new ship at some point, why lock it behind 4 points of a skill that otherwise gets me nothing? 4 whole levels into that needed. Ridiculous.

Ridiculous. ship classes are also kinda level based, a C class at level 20 isn't going to be better than a well kitted out A class (unless it's a pre-built from the ship vendor), and most C class components also require other skills (piloting & ship design) For XP doing a survey of a high level planet with fauna tends to be good, you get 40-160XP per animal kill, as well as bonuses for scanning stuff.

I felt like that around level 20 but now I'm level 40 I've realised the skill tree is so boring I don't care about levelling up anymore.

I do wish games in general would make levelling up less constantly incremental and instead less frequent but more meaningful. Think back to when you got a new weapon in something like Doom or Quake. It was such a rush. Hours of work for a meaningful reward and new gameplay. Bioshock/Dishonoured are maybe a nice middle ground between drip fed customisability and impactful power ups. Starfield and Cyberpunk (haven't played with new skill trees yet) constantly throw 10% improvements to this and that. It's so uninspiring. Feels more like a hassle opening the menus and reading all the things I could adjust that will make no perceptible difference.

The fastest way to level up is find a high level planet with abundant wildlife and let rip.

Playing Starfield for a couple of hours gives me the urge to go play Skyrim instead I've gone all in on fallout 4 survival mode instead. This is a great looking game but it's disjointed nature is at odds with my urge to play it. Yet I'm constantly thinking about FO and when I'm next back on it. Also, survival mode is the way the play. Fuck it's hard but is a massively fun challenge. All that junk that was previously just used for weapons and hardly anything else is now crafting chems which I'm constantly gobbling down because of illnesses or encumbrance issues

I really wish I could into survival mode, but for me it just sucks all the fun out of it. Of course, it does mean you can become a god at level 1 and then switch it off though, so it's not all bad.

Just finished kryx's legacy last night. It was a great quest and the last section before the shitey binary choice was so atmospheric. Definitely Bethesda environmental story telling up there with FO3's. Fucked over the CF which felt bad, but hey ho. I'd sooner have returned it to whence it came, but that wasn't an option for some reason.

As you say it meant all those inventory items actually mattered and having to drink and sleep aided the immersion a bit.

I’m sprinting to the end of the main quest, having decided to mop up all the other stuff I haven’t done in NG+, rather than finish every faction and side quest now. Someone said earlier that there’s a point where you have a ton of grinding to do, and I can totally see how that could happen. Fortunately, I’d already put points where they were needed, so I’m not blocked at all, just need to add a few ship mods. Basically it feels like this first playthrough has been a dry-run and I’ll be starting my proper one soon, better prepared with all the weapon, equipment and spaceship crafting fully enabled at the beginning. That, or I’ll get bored doing the starting stuff again, put it down, and only come back once console mods are available.
