Starting to feel even worse about potentially buying the AITD remake next month. I'm almost hoping reviews are bad just so I have an excuse to bail out.

I'm wondering who's decided to buy Gearbox. I feel like it's going to be someone like Amazon, purely from a transmedia point of view.

You think? Would they have the money for that purchase???

Not sure. How much are they valued at? Sega bought the Angry Birds studio for nearly 800m last year so maybe they want to continue to invest. Wouldn't be a bad company for them to have.

Take-Two would make some sense I would think as it was a surprise they didn't pick them up when they were in the mood to sell the company given their long time links over Borderlands.

That means Space Marine 2 is alright then? Yes Saber released a press release yesterday to confirm that particular game and a few others were in active development still for anyone concerned.

Not sure if Embracer retaining part of the studios means they wanted to keep them, or Saber wasn't interested.

Seems a bit of an odd choice to sell off potentially your best franchise, considering the film is on the cusp of coming out. Sure, it's a good chunk of change, but you'd assume they'd make some dollar back...

INSIDE INFORMATION: Embracer Group has today entered into an agreement to divest Gearbox Entertainment, for a consideration of USD 460 million (SEK 4.9 billion) to Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (“Take-Two”). The proceeds from the deal will, upon closing, significantly reduce net debt, earnout obligations and capex. Embracer retains selected companies, including Gearbox Publishing San Francisco (to be renamed), with the publishing rights to the Remnant franchise, the upcoming Hyper Light Breaker and other notable unannounced game releases.

Speaking of Dev sales, I also see that Sega has sold off Relic so now it's an independent studio but seeing as it cut half of its staff we'll see how that goes. Oh...and Sega made 240 people redundant, mainly from Creative Assembly.
Ahh good old firing people to create a small improvement to your bottom line, losing all of in house knowledge and then having to hire more people in the future because you need that knowledge again. It's foolproof.

Possibly a lot of the Creative Assembly job cuts are down to Hyenas being cancelled, I still don't know how that ever got into production.

Big problem with Hyenas it looked like a F2P game that took elements from lots of other F2P games with tons of Sega nostalgia thrown on top but then wasn't actually a F2P game. It was never going to work as a full priced title.

This is the issue, a lot of these GaaS games should be F2P but they're sold as boxed products and they're shocked when people balk at paying that 70 quid asking price. But also you have a good amount of younger people as your audience who have grown up with games being free at the point of entry.

It's foolproof. Just seen this. Relic getting dropped isn't too surprising, considering CoH3 was a bit of a flop, as was DoW3 not long ago. Age of Empires 4 was reasonably well regarded critically (no idea about it's commercial success), but not sure if Sega had anything to do with that one as a Microsoft published game. Bit weird that Sega had become the big name in the PC strategy market, but looks like that might have just changed.

FWIW, Take Two/2K published all the previous Borderlands titles. That was actually a natural fit.

EG has a story about "Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors has acknowledged it's "way too early" for the company to "start talking about" acquiring new studios."
No shit!

Wait untill Tencent or some hedgefund gets involved. Embracer will be back to their old ways of asset stripping.
