I can't believe they bought a ton of studios *before* actually getting that $2 billions deal in the bag. It's ridiculous.

Gearbox is probably a half decent purchase if anyone has the cash sitting about. Seems weird to sell one of your best money makers though.

It’s what you do when you have big debts, need a lot of money and they cost a lot to keep going.

Probably see Gearbox being the only one they can get the type of money they need.
They only purchased them 2 years ago.

If you do that though you have to look at what's left to make money, be better off selling some IP

I didn’t even realise Embracer had Gearbox. That’s Borderlands and the infamous Aliens Colonial Marines? My understanding is Borderlands 3 underperformed.

Brothers in Arms series though they haven't done anything with it since the 360/PS3 era. Duke Nukem and Homeworld franchises as well. As for B3, sold over 8M in a couple months and was up to 18m last mentioned but wiki doesn't say if it was seen as a let down. Would many want to take Pitchford on though?

Time to say goodbye to Eidos Montreal as an entity then if they close Volition and now want to see Gearbox. I can almost imagine Crystal Dynamics are on the chopping block too. What an absolute shitshow of a publisher. Who knew that rapidly expanding and buying everything going without actually releasing any games and depending on Saudi Arabia to fund your existence would eventually end up fucking yourself over.

As much disdain as I have for Embracer's behaviour, the bolded bit is the only one I don't actually understand.
Hoovering up every company they could get their hands on? Kind of scummy, but clearly seen as a viable business strategy by some.
Attempting to get in bed with the Saudis? Utterly reprehensible, but money's all these amoral douchebags care about.
Not releasing any games, though? I don't get it!
They could've got their newly-acquired studios to churn out remakes of old Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and Thief games, or just plain remasters; hell, as we've seen lately from Rockstar and Konami, even low-effort ports would probably have earned them a tidy sum, especially as Deus Ex and Thief fans are so starved for content these days.
Instead, they just sat around and did nothing, while putting all their eggs in a basket held by a journalist-murdering prince. Baffling.

Konami aren't much better
They give so little of a shit about their games business that they lost the source code for one of the most beloved games of all time

Yeah but for Konami games are a side business, and aren't buying IP and studios as an asset strip.

They also aren't spending 8 months working with just a verbal agreement

Oh, Konami sucks as well, no doubt about it; that said, releasing a half-assed MGS compilation is still more proactive than Embracer was with any of the IPs they bought from Square!

So they fucking make a big deal of buying all these studios only to start shuttering them down the line? Why the fuck is there not some kind of legislation in place to stop these kinds of buyouts? Or is there? It's pish.

I still can't believe the price they paid for most of Square Enix's western studios and IP like Tomb Raider etc.
Did Embracer group have some dirt or leverage on SE's CEO or something...
Keep dreading a news story that they're shuttering Crystal Dynamics or Eidos Montreal.

Well you have a CEO who still believes in the viability of NFTs and all that bollocks and the view that 8 million copies sold is "under expectations"so I'm not surprised they undervalued all that IP.

It annoys me that these cunts gobbled up these great IP and they've done nothing but fuck up and punishing studios and Devs because of their greed.
