I think my game bugged out before that. In the end, I really only managed to play the Melee Island part.
But I remember when at the start Guybrush goes "hey, it's Timmy the Monkey!", and I was like, who the eff is Timmy the Monkey supposed to be?

I… I never played MI2. Started with 3, I was a multimedia pc kid. Then played MI1 much later when I got a PDA and installed scummVM on it. Tried 2 a couple times but got stuck really early on. Was looking at the MI series on Steam last night, and they just shipped my Steamdeck, so finally going to give it a go.

I've never played Thimbleweed Park, so I should definitely get on with it, if only to see how Gilbert's adventuring output has progressed in the past 30 years.

"Progressed" is not the word. You know it's a point-and-click with pixel graphics? And big heads.

I'll have no progression round here. If it doesn't have obtuse puzzles, then I'm not buying it. Also make sure you collect every speck of dust.

I dont know, the first two games did push boundaries in different ways, the first one has very good overlapping puzzle design and helped push the genre in a less adversarial direction. The second did some neat stuff with iMuse. I would mind seeing someone attempt some innovation in a genre oft critiqued for being either stagnant, or dead.
Its a tricky tightrope to walk, especially with such a beloved IP. But I look forward to seeing what Ron Gilbert does with his baby.

Some kind of app based dial-a-pirate thing?

Some kind of app based dial-a-pirate thing? If it results in a pirate turning up at my house, maybe!

I genuinely miss midi soundtracks. Especially if you have a decent synthesizer or a good mt32 emulator, old games can still sound absolutely terrific. Hopefully they’ll come back in vogue like chiptune stuff.

I really love the low-key Scabb Island map music from MI2. They really managed to do some incredible things.

I still think the fact that Monkey Island 2 had a "continuous" soundtrack with different themes for pretty much every screen (must have been a first for an adventure game) and smooth transitions between tracks, and they made basically all of it (including iMuse) in eleven months, was nothing short of a miracle.

Looking forward to this for a nostalgia trip. MI3 was great, but a different beast from the first two. MI4 and the episodes were enjoyable but don't have the same place in my heart.
The first two though... definitely a time of life thing but the nostalgic appeal is up there with the best of them.

I preferred Loom... mostly because the puzzles were easy and it was one of the few of these things I ever managed to finish by myself.

Are we having a bit of a point & click renaissance at the moment? Just finished the excellent Perfect Tides and want to play both Norco and Chinatown Detective Agency that have just come out.
Can't remember the last time that there have been more than one worthwhile point & click game around to play. Certainly don't think there has been since the 90s.

I think they've been knocking about for the last decade but probably more attention recently.

There certainly has been a little ripple of announcements around some popular names and brands in the genre very recently. This, a new Flight of the Amazon Queen game, a new Syberia and something coming from Ken and Roberta Williams. Though, obviously, how dare you.

Vandelay if you haven't played Unavowed yet, literlly stop what you're doing RIGHT NOW and go get it.

Yeah, Unavowed is great. I do need to play more of Wadjet Eye's output though.
Might have been poor choice of wording in my earlier message. I meant that there hasn't been multiple interesting point and click games releasing all around the same time, not that there hasn't been any good ones since the 90s. There certainly have been some great ones.
As I say, there have been three released and MI being announced just in this past month or so. Point and click news being that interesting seems a massive rarity for a very long time.

The only Wadjet Eye game I've played is Gemini Rue and I really enjoyed that.
Guess I need to play Unavowed asap!

Wadjet Eye games are generally very nice. There were always point and clicks coming out after the greats went away, mostly from Germany and these are not terrible, but English versions tend to be on the poor side. Deponia comes to mind: it looks excellent, but the translation and dialogue delivery is mightily poor.

Now I crave more Simon the Sorcerer. Played through 1 & 2 around this time last year, first replay since completing them on release! Amazing memories, love the Simon games. The Woodroffes have always been open to licensing the IP out, though they got stung by those shambolic German dev games. I always thought if an indie British developer got in touch, like the "Ben there, Dan that" guys, that could be an excellent partnership.

That's pretty decent! As much as I would like to be 10 again and spend 10 hours figuring out a puzzle..
