Christian values, is he not a scientologist or is that just made up? Apparently but he keeps it on the DL.

To be honest, making jokes about black hair is questionable no matter what. It’s a deeply personal thing connected to their shared history and you just don’t want to go there.

I think the most pathetic part of it was Chris Rock meekly calling out “It was a G.I. Jane joke!” after the fact. Sidenote: Hasbro have been streaming G.I. Joe cartoons non stop on YouTube to celebrate the 40th anniversary. My eight-year old self would have dreamed of this day. Not sure why that is pathetic? He is trying to calm Smith down and clutching at anything I would guess. Also do we know if he definitely knew she had Alopecia yet? If he did it was terribly bad taste joke but nothing worse than Gervais says all the time. Definitely not assault me on stage in front of the entire watching world territory. Maybe because his excuse was it being a joke about a largely forgotten 25-year-old film. Take that 1997.

I remember him being asked ages ago and saying something among the lines of he's read up on it and he likes some of the ideas but he's rocking with Jesus.

I'm not mad at a man standing up for his wife, tbh. I don't think anyone has a problem with defending her in and of itself, but you can't seriously justify using physical violence in response to something someone has said (no matter how bad it is), can you? I think if I was to go and start flinging racist terms at black people, I'd - rightly - get a kicking. So, yes, sometimes you can justify violence for something someone says.

It’s fair game if you’re black though surely. More problematic is a man making jokes about a woman’s body choices which these days is definitely questionable, even without the alopecia angle.

You'd think Chris Rock would've known better, since he made a whole documentary about it.

Even then it’s an topic you’re better off leaving be. I know comedy is trying to get as close to the line of inappropriateness as possible but that’s one area I’d just straight up leave alone no matter what.

I mean I’ve seen Jewish comedians make jokes about the Holocaust, pogroms, the Spanish Inquisition…

I'm pretty sure it's ok for black people to make jokes about black hair.

I'm pretty sure it's ok for black people to make jokes about black hair. Yeah, although perhaps just not involve yourself in a documentary about the culture that surrounds black hair and the negative perceptions about it in media then take the piss out of a black woman's hair. It kinda has a bad look to it.

Although the joke wasn't even about black hair, it was a joke about her having a shaved head and looking like GI Jane (who didn't have black hair).
Unless I'm misunderstanding what he said.

Yeah it was, but referencing a 25 year old movie for a cheapass joke. It's a fucking reach. Regardless the whole is embarrassing for everyone involved.

Not sure it's that much of a reach to be honest, people reference old films (and quote from them) all the time.
If he knew about her condition then it's a shitty thing to do but as seemingly nobody else really knew then it's doubtful.

But like I said the whole thing is ridiculous and embarrassing.

Sure it's embarrassing but he publicly assaulted someone in front of a huge audience. There's been zero consequences and he's got an Instagram full of vids him celebrating without a care in the world.
It's insane. It's legitimising attacking people if you don't like what you hear. Shit like this encourages fuckwits in copycat behaviour.

TMZ saying he wasn't aware according to a close friend of his as well.
However the only person who knows if he knew or not is him.

One point is that you could slightly modify the delivery of the joke and it becomes complimentary rather than a roast.

It's definitely an interesting thought experiment trying to work out who in that room would have been kicked out as soon as they had got up and smacked the host.

GI Jane is such an obscure reference. It's not even a particularly well known/remembered film I'd argue. At least, it took me a while to trawl the memory banks to understand the joke.
He should have gone with Coneheads.

Probably not that obscure for an audience of film industry people.

Ridley Scott's masterpiece. Perhaps controversially, I prefer Private Benjamin myself
