If you were a student of the dark arts of the Ninjutsu like myself you would know that we win by whatever means necessary. Plus ducking out the way of shit is way cooler.

I had a bit of an experimental run through level 1 last night where I think I had my eureka moment with the dodge. Died a lot more than any other run through 1 I've had so far, but it was my most useful playthrough yet.
Also came to the realisation that you need to be extremely proactive with crowds. It's much better getting to work on thinning the herd ASAP than it is to do the Batman/Assassin's Creed thing of letting them surround you so you can take turns trying to parry/dodge each of them.

Now I see why people complain about Sean. First phase is fine, second phase is reasonable..until he powers up and you just never know where he's gonna hit and doesn't give you much of an opportunity to fight back if not for focus attacks. Went from a reasonable 32 when it started to about 46 at the end. Would need to try again with the short cut to cut down on age, but it would fuck me over if I don't do the full level to get the shrines and xp

The avoid is by far the most useful thing on the game, the timing window is pretty big. And yeah ultra agressive is definitely the way to go.

Yeah Sean was fine for me until that last half of his health bar. Having spent the whole fight dodging downward I was flummoxed by him mixing it up.
Dare say the ground sweep would have been just the ticket for that part, but this dumb shit didn't invest in it. I'm going to batter him tonight now I know what I'm doing.

Yeah the focus sweep is pretty invaluable on boss fights. I think I'm going to have to grind out the catch a thrown weapon thing for the third boss.

It didn't seem that useful when I first saw it, but that move to cancel you being staggered backwards is pretty handy considering the damage you can take if the enemies push you back to a wall

Right, but what is the timing? Because I’m watching YT videos and people are parrying everything. Look at the no death video above, for example. But it doesn’t work. I can’t work out the timing, and “just before you get hit” isn’t a good enough instruction because that’s what I’m doing and it’s just not successful. I can dodge attacks, and I can evade and guard. But parry is vital for certain enemies to interrupt their attacks, unless you want individual fights to just become a war of attrition and hope you have enough lives to make it through. The kick-boxer looking dude in the club level, and neon dudes being 2 examples. You can beat them but it’s not efficient, and you’ll never maximise your lives. I feel your pain because I can't fucking do it yet either. I find a combination of holding L1 to block some of the shit, flicking up and down to hop and duck under low/high blows and tapping R2 to dodge and then hold to run away is about where my defence is at the moment. If it helps, I find it's key not to allow yourself to get surrounded or pinched into corners and against the wall and shit, manage your environment and placement. Definitely don't get hit from behind because that hugely damages your structure meter, which is tied in somehow to how much damage you take from all hits even light ones. I think.

Yeah, I've been sandwiched into a corner by 3 opponents and pummeled to death real fast. I feel like a grapple move should work out of the gate, rather than requiring a hit or stunned opponent to activate.
I can evade attacks fine, and with the upgrades to restore structure it has it's place, but parries impact the opponents structure so they're essentially weakening themselves by attacking you (and there's an upgrade to increase it further). And it can break their attack allowing you to counter. It will finish fights far more quickly. It's definitely the most valuable defensive mechanic.

Being able to grapple out of those situations would cheapen it. Spatial awareness and making sure you don't get cornered is a big part of what makes the group fights so interesting.

Works very differently to how games normally deal with group fights. Every really successful one I've had so far has come from me taking it to them rather than playing the patient game. If they are starting to bunch up on you, I've found a couple of flicks of R2 to develop some distance and basically resetting works really well. Bottles are also a godsend, and I'm sure that skill where you can kick chairs will probably help massively too.
My first ever run saw me beat the first level at 23, when I basically hadn't gauged the difficulty and just went for it on some of the harder encounters. After that I started hesitating to play it 'properly' and suffered for it. Gotta be aggressive.

I disagree. It's not like the switch place grapple does damage, and it's an unlock so is there to give you more dexterity. You can go from full health to dead in less than 2 seconds simply because the first hit prevents you from guarding again immediately, and the next hits are all incoming. If you get surrounded you literally cannot move, so what are you supposed to do? Yes, you should avoid getting into bad situations but when they happen you should have a method of being able to get out of them to continue being able to fight. It happened to me last night, simply because I dodged an attack but I couldn't see a drawer unit behind me, and as I span the camera to see why I couldn't step back I had 3 enemies push forward. Game over. Tried to guard but it didn't matter - structure broke because guard still takes damage, and dead. Whereas a 'R2+forward' would've just allowed me to switch position with an enemy, retreated and refocused.

I haven't been trapped in the corner or been hit with unavoidable attacks since my first couple of runs. Just keep practicing, it'll come.

I've been done in once or twice by being boxed in but it's always felt of my own doing. The camera can be a bit shit at times though. Been a few occassions when I've been backed into a corner all I've been able to see is a wall while my health bar evaporates.

It doesn't happen often, it's just that a single death is so valuable that it's incredibly annoying to have it happen just once. More so if it comes at a group fight near the end of a level.

But this is very much a game about repeating things over and over in order to seek perfection. And knowing where to avoid to stop the camera fucking up is kind of part of that too. It's not for everyone but it's my ideal game game, I absolutely love just trying to get through stuff in the most perfectly stylish looking way possible.

Nah it's brilliant IMO. Combat is really engaging and the levels are just the right size for me to have the patience to learn. It's got quite strange timing to some of it but I think it's intentionally there to stop you leaning on skills picked up in other games.

Should we have a "best The Squats run" competition?
This was a one lifer. The death is fucking shameful though.

Ahh that is literally the encounter where I always die in The Squats. I thought you'd pulled it back nicely in the corridor as well.
Yeeting the guy down the stairwell was an absolute thing of beauty.

I've done the Squats with no deaths. I'm currently on my best run of the Club, about to take on the 2 assholes before the boss room, age 22.

It very much feels like the 2 people before Sean bit of the first level. Any other deaths in the level feel like pure unforced error to me at this point.

5 deaths. Age 39. I don't understand how to counter the staff guys. In his second form, he strikes and retreats immediately, so if you can't counter you literally can't hit him.
Parry is so important, but seemingly impossible to time on a PS5 pad.

Must admit, these PS5 sticks are fricking annoying. Fingers seem to roll off the top very easily compared to my Xbox pads - especially in the heat of a sweaty ninja battle. Might need some double sided gorilla tape.

Decks That footage has me sold, even though I've seen the trailers, watching someone competent run through a level makes the game seem even better than hoped. I'll have to wait for payday next week though, but I'm sold.

Keep dodging, then focus sweep him. In general, you want to eye gouge rather than focus sweep. The eye gouge leaves them stunned so you can then 'forward, back, triangle' sweep, attack on the ground, and get another hit on standing. It gives you more damage overall. But, again, parry counter is more valuable to learn. It damages their structure, which makes fights faster and you'll take less damage.
