I've spent an absolutely ridiculous amount of time in GTAO but the early days when it was pretty unstructured and people were largely just dicking around making their own fun is probably when it was most enjoyable. The half-arsed truck race on 360 with the server pretty much being all EGers is something I'll always look back on fondly.

I've also done GTA Online far more than the single player. Haven't played mush since Cayo Perico, mainly because I think they hit a plateau of new content and didn't have anywhere to go except adding more cars and cosmetics, which I was less interested in. I was always about the planes and helicopters, but my hangar's now so full I have to delete one if I want to add a newer one - which sucks.
I'm interested in seeing how they manage the transition to GTA VI without splitting the online playerbase. It must be a hard problem to solve, with so many players so heavily invested (financially and otherwise) in the current version of online.

I imagine they'll treat the two online worlds as separate entities but with some additional bonuses and stuff for returning players like they did when people migrated between generations of GTA V.
The ideal situation would be to be able to move between regions somehow, like an airport, but the games are going to be running probably very different versions of the engine so it would mean them porting Los Santos into the new one. They've had plenty of time to work it out but who knows?

Tell their customers to bend over and invest in the new one. It seems to work.

Jambowayoh They may end up doing that, I get the temptation. I'm not sure GTA Online Players necessarily have the same kind of loyalty as CoD players who are used to buying a new installment in the franchise every year - but the players Rockstar wants to bring over are the ones who buy Shark cards, so maybe those players will be fine paying a lump sum to start over in a new map. To be honest, I also quite like the idea of starting from scratch - as long as they don't lose the quality of life changes they made to GTA Online in the past year or two to make it less of a grind. It used to take SO long, with so many repeated car thefts and cargo sales to make enough to buy the next new shiny vehicle or business - I can't face that slog again.

I haven't played it in ages, but the old online sessions we used to have were some of the best online gaming I have ever had. When the nextgen versions came out (as they were then, mad to think that's happened twice) it was everyone picking PS that made me get a PS4. We all played slightly differently (I had a penchant for sticky bombs, occasionally to the detriment of my fellow crew members, but I was decent in a chopper) but it just worked. One of my favourite missions was the one where you have to take the big plane down. We knew it so well we all had our positions and roles, and could pull it off so effortlessly (though still, occasionally, with disastrous results). Then there was the time we tried to see if we could derail a train, spending ages pilling up a load of cars on the tracks and nearby explosives. I accidentally set off some sticky bombs a little early (shock) and we had to survive a lot of heat before the train came round. It didn't derail. I had less gaming time when heists came out but what I did play, with us all on together, was at times epic. I do have faith in Rockstar - even if the animation is a bit clunky at times, I still love their games - so am looking forward to more GTA. Hopefully we can get the gang back together when it does.

If they really wanted to milk it they could link available playable characters to retail edition cost…

Where does that cost come from? Just more staff? The most expensive part of any business.

This still gets a laugh from me and I've watched it a fair amount of times, our plucky hero Dave_McCoy seeing if he can use some Hydras as a bridge. I look forward to more dumb shit in the new game, which will hopefully be crossplay so everyone can join up.

Does always make me laugh when your player character detects a ledge nearby the water and swan dives off, whether you wanted them to or not.
I played a disgusting amount of hours of GTAO with a few mates just because it's a relatively low stakes and (mostly) chilled out, bar a few of the gang heist missions. When my friends weren't about I spent just as much time doing races. I do hope when it comes to the latter they make it easier to pick and join other online modes because it's a fucking pain. That and i'd go for very, very long periods of time on the same 'rockstar approved' tracks, which got a bit boring after a while.

I've never really had much interest in GTA Online. Played it with a friend when it first launched, but back then it was a bit bare bones and the basic gameplay loop wasn't very fun.
I suspect GTA 6 might feature more connectivity, but that puts me off slightly, will need to see what the actual campaign looks like.
I hope the campaign and online elements are separate installs, ended up uninstalling GTAV because of the seemingly constant updates for Online content that I can't access (unless I can be bothered to faff around with mods).

On the one hand, playing the campaign in a city at least partly populated by other players would be kind of cool but on the other hand, it would absolutely destroy any sense of immersion to be in a tense mission and come across DongMaster1998 and SniperKillahBBC blocking the freeway with their bus jousting

This is my prediction. When you're on a mission yeah it's just you but the general open world would be with people. If it was compulsory online only it would make think twice about purchasing it.

Yeah, you’d think so. It’s odd. Some of my fondest memories of GTA are just cruising around aimlessly to ‘running down a dream’ or something and as cool as a populated city would be, I can’t imagine how annoying it would be to get t-boned every five minutes by some dickhead while just trying to get from A to B.

It’s also possible that they’ll make it so that players can see each other but kind of ghost through each other unless it’s in mission. Kind of like Horizon.

With me being the dickhead in everyone else’s game because I still can’t get used to driving on the right in a video game even with 20+ years of experience

Humans disgusts me. I play games to escape from them.
Even seeing ghosts or something like that will completely ruin any enjoyment i might derive from the game.
It also breaks immersion. Driving around seeing cool scenery with amazing music playing in the background while suddenly a player does a rocket jump with his bike? Screw that.

I’m fully on team keep single-player solo.
Maybe if there was some kind of co-op invite system you could use to bring friend in but I’d be ignoring it if there was.

Yeah, it definitely has to be a manual opt in for any of that bullshit. I can't see that happening, though. I bet the world will be full of constant reminders of its online nature.

I tried to enjoy that snowboarding game Ubisoft did as it was either free or on game pass or something, actually seemed to have a nice snowboard feel but seeing loads of other players milling around as ghosts annoyed me. This is just me, but I think my kind of social anxiety includes computer games so having other people around just makes me feel like I'm being watched or judged. It's entirely in my head.

As with a lot of franchises, sometimes to move forward you have to leave some people behind. I too am generally an offline/SP kind of guy normally but I’m staying open minded about this. I have quite a lot of faith in the devs.

I've no idea where this always online idea about GTA6 has even turned up from, there's certainly been no indication of it from the leaks and Rockstar don't need to push it as a concept because they'll make money hand over fist from online being its own mode any way and keeping the two separate makes perfect sense. Having multiple Jasons and Lucias in the world at the same time wouldn't really work either, even if you changed the look of the characters to something random to other players.
The Watch Dogs games had an aspect of always online with all three of the games but that was a maximum of 4 players at one time on the entire map and it was more like invasions in other titles than GTAO, you could always switch it off too. It was quite fun to do some of the tasks like hacking a player while they're completely oblivious to you being in the world, slightly buggered up when they realised they couldn't start a single player mission and it was a massive indication they weren't alone.

Yeah I don't see it being always on tbh. It worked fine with the phone in GTAV and I'd imagine they can make the change to your online character seamless the game being two generations up from the last game.
Besides the main characters of the game were leaked long ago. Always on would only work if the main character was a self made avatar. and that'd be absolutely shite for a main campaign.

I turned the multiplayer stuff off in Watchdogs. Want nothing to do with it.
Even found the non-synchronous overlap of players in Death Stranding annoying, just leaving junk everywhere.
I'll see where GTA goes. I can't say I'm all that excited though. I was very hyped for San Andreas and GTAV, but not sure what they can do. Whilst the level of detail is impressive and they certainly lead the way, the games just aren't as unique anymore.
I'm trying to keep an open mind but I'm coming from a very dispassionate place to begin with.

I think Rockstar are still untouched for their reactive gameworlds that show incredible attention to detail as well as making you want to explore.

The controls are either gonna suck, or they’ll go for something that feels like Fortnite, as that will translate well to the online side of things.
