Even just as an act of naked political survival I’m amazed that the Tories haven’t read the room well enough to actually propose anything to deal with the energy price hikes.
I know they’re slightly encumbered by Boris having checked out months ago but surely someone must realise that killing your voters isn’t a great electoral strategy.
Unless they’re so wedded to the ideology of market forces being all powerful that they think all this is worth it.
I feel like even Cameron and May would have sensed the “something must be done” vibe across the country as the Telegraph is printing lifestyle articles on why being cold and starving might not be all that bad.

Cutting income tax on a sliding scale and then increasing for the highest earners e.g £80k+ on a sliding scale would seem sensible, with a tax on profits for the energy companies to cover any gap seems an easy and obvious answer. Long term plan of a massive increase in solar and wind also seems easy and obvious.

Long term plan of a massive increase in solar and wind also seems easy and obvious. Just ditch NI completely, and make up the shortfall by raising all the income tax bands above basic, and by default capture other sources of income that would not be captured by NI tax (mostly passive income from established wealth).
The fact we tax income from labour more than income from wealth is stupid anyway. This would be the perfect way to give more people on lower incomes more take home to cope with increased costs.

Problem is that there is no executive. Even if someone *wanted* to do something, they can't do anything because Johnson is basically sulking. He won't be allowed to play at being PM so he's not going to let any governing happen. It's pathetic.

Has anyone got any tips regarding cannibalism?
I've done a ittle research and there’s some evidence that keeping multiple victims in a cage can help reduce heating costs.
I'm just wondering about post meal storage. I don't want to splash out on a larger freezer if I can help it.

You still have to feed them. It's not going to save you money in the long term.
Going to prison though. That's a money saver.

Well thanks BBC for dispelling the idea that I'm a middle earner. Fuck, today's been one kick in the teeth after another.

Well thanks BBC for dispelling the idea that I'm a middle earner. Fuck, today's been one kick in the teeth after another. The median average salary for full-time workers in the UK is £31,285. so says Google. There will be regional differences - this will be skewed by London.

Just read somebody’s plan for the winter- “From October I am looking at turning off the fridge, making coffee with cold water, no oven/microwave/hotplate so no hot food, cold water sink wash instead of shower, hand wash clothes in cold water. No TV or games console. I have to keep using my tiny electric fire as it’s the only heat I have and I need heat and I need to keep my phone charged in case my disabilities trigger a medical emergency so I can phone an ambulance and wait days for it.” Meanwhile, Tories are heating their stables.

It's an extreme case, but still tragic.
Was listening to Any Answers on radio 4 and quite a few OAPs calling in to say they'll be retreating to one room for the winter and wrapping up.

Not sure why OAPs are worried. Johnson gave them all bus passes to keep warm this winter.

That earlier post. They are going to have fun when their water pipes freeze.

The blitz was almost 80 years ago. Most of the OAPs have never experienced this despite what the oldies on FB etc think.
Good point on the pipes though, a lot of people will end up with even more issues if they can’t afford the bare minimum heating.

Frustrates me that’s regularly repeated (and the glory handily donned by gammons who conveniently fail to correct)- boomers didn’t fight and suffer through the war their parents did.

Personally read this as the tories saying they'll give money to everyone rather than be seen giving "handouts" only to the poor and at risk. Bit to charitable for the base otherwise and they can't upset them. Even the lack of action from Boris is a careful plan to let the world burn just as Truss takes over, in preperation for his return. Promising the next PM will help while hoping to the Ukraine for the occasional photo op between holidays. God I hate them. Energy bill wise it hasn't hit us yet, but I've a feeling our log burner will be worth it's weight in gold come winter.

Just started looking at getting a bulk order of logs for the upcoming winter (of discontent)
All hardwood logs on 3-4 week order due to high demand. Lots of people having the same idea perhaps.

Not at the one I usually order at. Lekto still doing birch and oak (as well as various slow burning compressed logs), in boxes or pallets.

just a quick warning on wood prices - the prices at that lekto link are so high that I think even with gas prices as they are it'd be significantly cheaper to run central heating if you have it than burn logs their pricing of a pallet of 48 22litre boxes = 1m3 (of boxes, one hopes each box is filled) for £477 - that's well over four times the price commercial forestries will be selling for seasonal dried stuff delivered in spring
